Is Appeasement Moral?
One other point on Iran. A lot of neoconservatives think it would be "immoral" for the United States to offer some sort of grand bargain to Iran—security guarantees, an agreement on our side not to attack, better economic and diplomatic relations—in exchange for nuclear disarmament. And yes, there would be something "icky" about appeasing the Iranian regime, which is hardly one of the world's most cuddly. But Ted Galen Carpenter and Justin Logan say just about all that needs to be said on this:
The Iranian regime is undoubtedly odious. But one of the requirements of an effective foreign policy is to engage with unpleasant regimes when America's national interest requires that step. This is one of those cases. The whole column is worth reading, but that part's well put. Moreover, do hawks genuinely believe that the alternative to a grand bargain -- preventive military strikes, perhaps involving up to 400 targets, some of them beneath densely populated urban centers -- is sensitive to the plight of Iranians?
Are we to believe that such a policy, which would involve thousands of civilian deaths, is the policy that best serves the interests of the Iranian people?

keethie -- Carpenter and Logan work for CATO, a libertarian institute which is wrong on most things, but definitely doesn't back the Bush administration on war. (And it's not a bad idea to publish on Fox -- try and persuade those in the wrong and all that.)

Unless Iran can be talked out of this, an unlikely scenario, do we just allow them to wipe Israel off the man? It may just be talk, but somehow I dont think that that chance can be taken.

So.... any option short of actually attacking them is appeasement? What a national disgrace. So called 'Americans' are sitting around talking about the necessity of launching yet another 'pre-emptive' attack on another country which poses no actual threat for the forseeable future. You are a nation of cowards and thugs.

You know, over and over, again, Americans talk about the strikes. But they never talk about the casualties. Assume 30 to 400 hardened targets in populated areas, releasing potentially highly volatile radioactive or chemical materials, and the disruption of infrastructure attendant. Then you have to be talking about the murder of thousands, perhaps tens or even hundreds of thousands of innocent people. How can you justify murder on this scale? How can you even talk about this and never acknowledge murder on this scale?

End the genocide in Darfur
Every day, Darfuris face rape, murder, and starvation. Be a Voice for Darfur: tell Obama to end the suffering.

Carpenter's and Logan's column would have a lot more credibility if their employer wasn't a certified proxy for Administration propaganda.
It might even be helpful if anyone in the country believed that the national well-being had anything to do with the Bush cabal's policy implementatioin.
