Press Corps Salivates Over Hillary's Marriage
At the risk of being redundant, it's probably worth emphasizing something in Atrios' post here. The other day—maybe it was Monday or Tuesday—the New York Times decided that the best use of its resources and space would be to send a reporter out to interview fifty people in order to find out if the Clintons were still having sex or not. And now David Broder, the so-called "Dean of the Washington Press Corps" has this to say:
But for all the delicacy of the treatment, the very fact that the Times had sent a reporter out to interview 50 people about the state of the Clintons' marriage and placed the story on the top of Page One was a clear signal -- if any was needed -- that the drama of the Clintons' personal life would be a hot topic if she runs for president.Ah, so Broder can tut-tut the article and distance himself from it by simply pointing out that this sort of thing is "bound to" come up and "the drama of the Clinton's personal life would be a hot topic if she runs for president." Note the passive construction, as if to say it's not his fault. Maybe it's Clinton's fault. But look, who's going to make it a hot topic here? Why, Broder and his fellow Washington journalists. If Broder thought Hillary Clinton's sex life was out of bounds or entirely irrelevant, he could just say so. But no. Instead he declares it inevitable. Nothing Broder can do. It's a cute racket.
And speaking of cute, it's simply adorable how Broder starts his piece by noting that when Hillary Clinton spoke at the National Press Club, he and his cohorts were more interested in salivating over "the state of her marriage" than listening to the boring details of her (quite decent, if a bit conservative) energy policy. Clinton actually had to apologize for making the speech too, as Broder calls it, "wonkish." Yeah, heaven forbid she hurt their little heads with details about stuff that actually matters.
UPDATE: Garance Franke-Ruta's take on this is very much worth reading.

Babysitting Bill would no doubt be the lighter side of what promises to be another horrendous contentious election, and may provide the only reason the nation doesn't turn off to the ethical and accusatory climate that's sure to come.
Why mess with success?
Of course, nearly 10 years after, the secret that Clinton's virility might be as much a question of that of Bob Dole might destroy the effectiveness of such ploys. He is, after all, about 60, not exactly the picture of virility despite his prior claims to fame in that arena.
Of course, the earlier photos of Schwartzenegger's dallying seem to have worked to bring publicity to his situation and circumstance to audiences far and away from the California capital, so perhaps it will work for the Clintons. There is nothing quite as sexy as the titilation that the mind can conjure, a fine feature of mental, not physical sex.

Really nothing the press does shocks me anymore. Why woyuld they be so interested in the Clinton's sex life? To keep on feeding the public with garbash of course so that they don't turn their attention to more important matters. This manipulation is so shockingly similar to the ones used in totalitarian countries. America, welcome Big Brother.

Focusing on Hillary's sex/marriage circumstances is just another Republican/Rove slimy smear tactic to degrade her and thus lessen her chances of winning, possibly/ hopefully defeating Jeb Bush and ending the Bush family dynasty of causing endless damage to America.
America badly needs to get rid of the Bush family and the Bush & Co. cabal. America badly needs a woman president for the benefit of all the little girls growing up in America and to lessen the effects of the unending second class status that women are still trapped in.
A woman president will do much to mitigate the 'second class status' that all women are caught up in. Just as a black president will do the same for the black community in America.

Exactly why are certain members of the Fourth Estate so much more concerned with Hillary's private life than with her politics...?
Well, just maybe, it has something to do with the fact that she's pushing so very hard for ethanol (and that $50 billion subsidy?)...
Man oh man oh man, in 2005, the ethanol industry used 14% of the total US corn production; in 2010, it's expected to rise to 22%; however, according to the US Dept. of Energy we can achieve approx. the same reduction in gas consumption (3.3%) just by keeping our tires properly inflated.
In the Mother Jones article The Hybrid Highway (2/23/04), Mr. Morris states that, "Admittedly, ethanol and other biofuels cannot displace gasoline ... There simply is not enough biomass to convert. But with hybrids and plug-in hybrids dramatically reducing the need for fuel, ethanol and other biofuels could become alternatives to gasoline, not simply additives as they are today."
In fact, according to Consumer Reports, few cars will realize the EPA estimates but hybrids seem to be off the mark by as much as 40%.
Furthermore, "While ethanol may dilute the amount of benzene in a gallon of gasoline, the amount of benezene that ends up in the ambient air due to increased evaporation from the fuel may be greater."
Huh, how is it that MTBE and ethanol were originally added to gasoline in order to help the air quality...? Right!!!
In other words, for those who want to know..., well, Hillary and her pet moguls are still up to the same old dirty tricks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
