Are We "Tolerating" Syria?
This week’s issue of The Weekly Standard features a classic bit of neoconservative logic. David Schenker, a former Defense Department advisor and resident scholar at the Near East Policy Institute in Washington, argues that the Bush administration is "in effect tolerating the Baathist dictatorship" in Syria. Now it's been just over three months since the US imposed its harshest-ever sanctions on the country; two years since the passage of the Syrian Accountability Act; and a mere three years since the Syrian government was deemed a "top target" for regime change at the hands of the US military. Yet in Schenker’s view, all this shows is the administration’s faintheartedness.
One thing Mr. Schenker seems to be short on is alternatives. What should the Bush administration be doing? While many experts agree that this administration’s Syria policy has been uninspired, even ambivalent, the more frequent conclusion among scholars is that "diplomatic engagement," or at least constructive dialogue, is the best way to handle Syria. Chiding the Bush administration for "tolerating" Bashar Assad implies that we ought to do to Syria what we did to Iraq. Unfortunately for Mr. Schenker, that would be a tall order for the US military at present. So somewhere amidst all that lambasting of Damascus, it would be helpful if he could provide us with some other, more productive ideas.

Oh wow!!! How truely bazarre (or is it?) that the US Gov. gave the nod to Iraq's chemical and biological programs, yet in 2003 Syria was DEEMED the Pentagon's next likely target for "regime change" amid suspicions it allowed Hussein to transfer WMDs within its borders...
Talk about the need for a regime overhaul:
Henry Kissinger participated in a GOP plot to undermine the 1968 Paris peace talks in order to assist Nixon's presidential campaign.
After Pakistani General Khan, armed with US weaponry, overthrew a democratically-elected gov. in an action that led to a massive civilian bloodbath, Kissinger blocked condemnation and instead humorously? (the jokes on us?) praised Khan's delicacy and tact.
In the early 1970s, Kissinger oversaw the CIA's extensive covert campaign that led to the coup against a democratically-elected gov. and installed the murderous military dictatorship of Pinochet. On June 8, 1976, at the height of Pinochet's repression, Kissinger met with him and said, "we are sympathetic to what you are trying to do here," (according to minutes of the session).
In 1975 Pres. Ford and Kissinger offered advance approval of Indonesia's brutal invasion of East Timor, which took the lives of tens of thousands of East Tumorese. According to the National Security Archive, Gen. Suharto, Indonesia's military ruler, asked for "understanding if we DEEM IT NECESSARY to take rapid or drastic action" in East Tumor. Ford said, "We will understand and will not press you on the issue. We understand the problem and the intentions you have."
How funny is it that on 9/9/01, Sixty Minutes aired a segment on charges aimed at Kissinger; he was DEEMED partly responsible for what is the Chilean equivalent of the JFK assassination.
And this is the man that George W. named to head a supposedly independent commission to investigate 9/11.
So..., it's no wonder that in 2003 "Syria" felt comfortable authorizing buses to transport men to Iraq (departing from Damascus Fair Grounds) to fight US forces.
On the other hand, when the U.S. Gov. mined the Nicaragua Harbor, that was DEEMED an act of war...
