John Bolton upset over U.N. official's criticism of U.S.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said today that a U.N. Deputy Secretary-General's remarks about the United States "can only do grave harm to the United Nations." Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown said yesterday in a speech that the U.S. relies on the U.N as a diplomatic tool, but then does not defend the body before critics at home. Brown went on to say that news of the U.N.'s good work that reaches much of the U.S. has been "largely abandoned to its loudest detractors such a Rush Limbaugh and Fox News."
Bolton called Brown's remarks a "very, very grave mistake" that could undermine Secretary-General Kofi Annan's efforts to effect a reform agenda for the U.N. Bolton told Annan that his deputy's remarks displayed a "condescending, patronizing tone about the American people."

"Bolton told Annan that his deputy's remarks displayed a "condescending, patronizing tone about the American people."
This from a man who has always used a condescending, patronizing tone about the U.N. When is this administration going to learn that it is called the "United Nations" not the "United Nations that is Run by the United States"?

I agree with all of the above. In addition, there's a scary threatening tone in Bolton's comment, "a very, very grave mistake." Does that mean the UN can't criticize the US without fear of repercussions? No one country should have that kind of power in the United Nations.

Huh!?, according to US Senator Barbara Mikulski, "Mr. Bolton went after intelligence professionals for doing their jobs, for telling the truth, for speaking truth to power. He was the power, the boss, the senior official and he had no use for truth. According to the investigation by the Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Bolton tried to fire an analyst with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research. The intelligence professional disagreed about language regarding BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS that Mr. Bolton wanted to include in a speech. Mr. Bolton also asked that the National intelligence Officer for Latin America be reassigned, because he told Mr. Bolton that the language on BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS did not reflect the intelligence community's assessment."
Consistent with Mikulski's avowal, Bolton has been tied to the mysterious death of John Kokal, an official of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research Near East and South Asian division (INR/NESA).
Kokal's INR bureau was at the forefront of challenging the Administration's claims that Iraq possessed WMDs.
An INR official, weapons expert Greg Thielman, has stated that Bolton, then Under Sec. for Arms Control and International Security, and his deputy, David Wurmser (he became Cheney's Middle East advisor) largely ignored INR intelligence and that Bolton often fabricated information to steer people in the wrong direction.
Longtome friends, ex-Iran-Contra felon Elliot Abrams and Bolton both helped devise the neoconservative game plan for US Global Domination through their ties to the Project for a New American Century (New???).
And, while Bolton was demanding the firing of State Dep't analyst Christian Westerman and CIA officer Fulton Armstrong, Abrams fired CIA officer Ben Miller (on loan to the NSC) and two NSC officials, Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann.
Kokal reportedly threw himself off the roof of the State Dep't headquarters while his wife Pamela, a public affairs specialist in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, was waiting for him in the parking garage.
A former INR employee claims that some one-third to one-half of INR officials are either former CIA or are on loan from the agency.
He also claims that it would have been impossible for Kokal to have gained access to the roof on his own...
And there was another mysterious death: an ex-CIA and NSC official, Dr. Gus Weiss, also suffered a fatal fall, from the Watergate complex, a few weeks after Kokal's death.
Like Kokal, Weiss was adamantly opposed to the Iraq invasion, and he went public with his protests...
No..., you don't piss on Superman's cape--and you don't cross swords with that nerdy meathead--John Bolton!!! (Er...--HELP!!!!!!!)

Was this UN guy trying to say that the US ought to control their media a little better? Because if that's what he was saying I'm in total agreement. One thing I've noticed about countries with too much freedom of the press is that often the media says all sorts of irresponsible things and end up alienating people, forcing them to resort to terrorism.
I say it's about time people started criticizing that meathead Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, and who better to do so than the current administration of the US government? This was well aimed constructive criticism on the part of this "Brown" fellow, that is bound to have a positive effect, as many readers have already noticed.

Please.....spare me you bleeding hearts!
This critisizem of Bolton or more precisley of the American people from the very members who were neck deep in the food for oil scandal. The very hypocrites who took millions from Sadam in exchange for opposing any action in his violations of human rights and murder going on daily in Iraq. Not to mention the multiple resolution violations ignored by the very body that passed those relolutions, only to come up with another, prefaced by "we really mean it this time"....followed by..."no really...we really really mean it now".
Did you all convieniently forget this is the assistant to the leader, whom by the way forgets he is nothing more than a civil servant but acts like and wants to be treated like he is head of some (allbeit pathetic) State.
The leader of an organization which stands by while death and destruction takes place all around them...i.e. Samalia, Sudan, Iraq..etc. etc.....and what about the rape and murder taking place by the very blue helmet brigade that was sent to protect these people. Oh I know..It's all right wing propaganda and lies right? That merely prooves your hypcracy. You are the same crowd that claims to care more than anyone else in the universe while at the same time making excuses for the very kinds of actions I just laid out....it's o.k. You are helping my cause more than you know....What is my cause? exposing you and your ilk....ICK!
It doesn't surpirse me in the least that you socialists would advocate surpression of the constitution....namely the first amendment....and I'm sure that would be just for starters. How inconvienient freedom and everything that made this country great must be for you. Communisem and socialisem has failed everywhere and every time it has been tried. But that doesn't stop you from wanting to burn the constitution....I know! It's o.k. though. I fully realise your utter hatred of freedom and the speech there in protected by the 1st ammendment. Freedom of Americas airwaves and your desire to eliminate that freedom only mean one thing....outside of your total ignorance I mean. You are loosing!!!
I can't tell you how cool that is!!! So I won't try.
Thanks though.

Hey Ben dover.. I cannot believe you typed that!
Bolton is the same guy that said he would not miss the top ten floors of the UN building. BTW Boltons office is in the top 5 floors, so I kinda agree a little with his own sentiments in that regard. The UN is not an organisation that caters to American interests. In fact it was born with exactly the opposite in mind. So that No Nation could corrupt it. Including the USA!! Which with the abuse the US has caused, over-using its veto, has done almost everything to prevent the UN from actually getting anything done. In my opinion the UN would be much more effective if the USA was simply excluded. And on the matter of putting up walls at the borders. Please please do so! and while you are at it, please stay out of the affairs of all other nations.
The world would be a much better place if the United States simply vanished. Since that is an impossibility, please do the next best thing. Wall yourself off from the world and stay out of everyone elses business. Keep all Americans within the borders of the USA. Stay out and away from all the rest of the world. Ahhhh what peace we would have.

John Bolton was appointed ambassador to the United Nations based on his qualifications and past record, as being the best man to undermine the organization. Taken the unselected President’s fascination for torture, opposition to human rights issues, the country’s close to 100 vetoes to UN resolutions- dealing mostly with human rights and the Administration’s demonstrated opposition to the UN it shouldn’t be surprising that the Bush administration wouldn’t even consider anybody interested in working towards improving the UN’s role in the world. The US administration wanted someone who was willing to undermine the organization.
As for the Human Rights Commission’s criticism of the US human rights violation, I cannot see that the commission went far enough in the questioning the nation’s human rights violations. There should have been more questioning of the US non functional justice system, where politically appointed and elected judges over rule Constitutional rights, Laws, Treaties, propaganda in the news media, rights of accused to examine evidence that has bee gathered, and/or fabricated to help prosecution win cases for the government. It is very obvious that something is seriously wrong when a nation with under 5 % of the world’s population holds over 25 % of the world’s prisoners. Torture by the military is only the tip of the iceberg. The same severity of torture takes place among the over 2 million prisoners held in jails and prisons within the US. There are even special cells with anchor point in the floor where prisoners are stripped naked, shackled down to the cold cement floor for hours and tortured with special government issued electrocution equipment. Beating is also used when the victim resists, but methods leaving no marks seem to be preferred. Solitary confinement, threats and drugging are also used to win confessions to get some sort of easy deal to win cases against the innocent when there is no good evidence of a crime available. These practices are long overdue for investigations by the UN Human Rights Commission.
