Congress Approves Eye-Eating Fungus
Awesome. According to Jeremy Bigwood of In These Times, the House recently an amendment authorizing the use of an "eye-eating fungus" to spray on crops in Colombia as part of the U.S. government's "war on drugs." The Colombian government is against the measure, seeing as how the fungus can attack humans and "cause redness and pain that can lead to blindness—requiring a corneal replacement," and could well mutate into something worse in the future.
In related news, Plan Colombia is still a billion-dollar failure that hasn't reduced drug use but has gotten a lot of people killed.

This is the same "Fungus" that was found to be present in contact lens wearers who use a specific type of contact solution.
Did anybody really read the above comment from "Mr. Wagner"??

Well..., I just thought that poisoning people with a fungus that's known to cause blindness is going too damn far.
Now, I know Whitey doesn't give a damn what I think..., but it seems to me that if a doctor can prescribe Zolof for depression, and that drug has a real nasty known side-effect, than why shouldn't people be "allowed" to use cocaine to feel good, seeing as there are no comparable side-effects...
Prohibition caused all kinds of problems, same with the Drug War.
Like, instead of embracing the gov.'s plan to poison people--get a LIFE!!!!

Ah, Rep. Dan Burton--he developed a reputation as a gadfly whose legislative proposals would inevitably fail and whose loudly stated opinions would be ignored, even by his own party.
But when Republicans took control of the House in '94 and Newt Gingrich became speaker, Burton's conservative idealism no longer seemed so extreme, and his committee assignments gave him new influence...
Yeah, compare his "wholesale poisoning" bill with Sen. Dianne Feinstein's anti-methamphetamine bill which would have made it a FELONY to link to Internet sites that include info on the manufacturing or use of illicit substances or how to acquire drug paraphernalia--if the reader might use the info to get high... Violations of the paraphernalia provision would have been punishable by a fine and prison term of up to three years; for providing info on manufacturing or use one might have gotten up to ten years!
Yeah, it's no wonder that the European Union refused to help fund Plan Columbia, instead pledging funds for development programs; just forget how 80% of the money is marked for military use, because Glyphosate, the chemical herbicide, only five years ago was labeled "safe, nontoxic, harmless, free of risk--until a '96 lawsuit in N.Y. required Monsanto to warn users that "..only protected handlers may be area during application." This where studies have shown that application by air (the method used in Columbia) leads to the greatest drift and has been found 800 meters from target...
According to David Olson, the Director of Conservation Science at the World Wildlife Fund, the poisoning of vast areas of Columbian forests is like dynamiting the Taj Mahal. Farm animals such as chickens have died as a result of the spraying while larger animals such as cows have fallen ill. One mayor of a remote village has complained, "The damage done to the physical and economic well-being of this community has been serious and is going to be very difficult to overcome."
Anyway, Burton was named chairman of the Gov. Reform and Oversight Comittee in '96. Later he was criticized for calling Clinto a "scumbug" and he was accused of NOT being IMPARTIAL in the Hubble investigation...
In fact, he was accused of demanding $5K from a Pakistani lobbyist, and of receiving improper donations, exactly what he was charged with investigating...
Funny?, how in '98 Mr. CHARACTER MATTERS (one of big Dan's favorite campaign slogans) publicly admitted to fathering an illegitimate child.
So..., in conclusion, it's not too surprising that some people contend that the US Gov. is both directly and indirectly implicated in the growing human rights crisis in Columbia, thus the US is in violation of the Leahy Amendment...
