Exploitation of the oceans "rapidly passing the point of no return."

InsertImage.asp.jpg

Okay, enough already with the good news. Via the Guardian, here's some of the other kind:

Damage to the once pristine habitats of the deep oceans by pollution, litter and overfishing is running out of control, the United Nations warned yesterday. In a report that indicates that time is running out to save them, the U.N. said humankind's exploitation of the the deep seas and oceans was "rapidly passing the point of no return."

Last year some 85 million tonnes of wild fish were pulled from the global oceans, 100 million sharks and related species were butchered for their fins, some 250,000 turtles became tangled in fishing gear, and 300,000 seabirds, including 100,000 albatrosses, were killed by illegal longline fishing.

Into the water in their place went three billion individual pieces of litter - about eight million a day - joining the 46,000 pieces of discarded plastic that currently float on every square mile of ocean and kill another million seabirds each year. The water temperature rose and its alkalinity fell - both the result of climate change. Coral barriers off Australia and Belize are dying and newly discovered reefs in the Atlantic have already been destroyed by bottom trawling.

The piece has a U.N. official saying, "Humankind's ability to exploit the deep oceans and high seas has accelerated rapidly over recent years. It is a pace of change that has outstripped our institutions and conservation efforts," and notes by way of example that mining could soon spread to the sea floor for the first time, with a Canadian company planning to dig for deposits of gold and copper off Papua New Guinea.

For a full inventory of the woes afflicting the oceans see Julia Whitty's excellent piece from the March/April Mother Jones. And if you want to do something about this mess--and you can--click here.

And don't forget our Great Lakes. Georgie boy Bush wants to put some 4400 oil wells in Lake Erie despite the fact that every geologist who addresses this idea says that there is so little oil under the American side of Lake Erie that it is a useless idea. The Canadians have a few wells on their side of the lake and have at least one oil spill per month which, of course threatens our water supply, even if they don't care about their own source of water.

Though I personally like the Canadian people their government uses the lake irresponsibbly by overfishing and oil drilling/oil wells. Someday, hopefully, they will wise up about the damage they are doing to this tremendous resource. Also the Candian government would do well to stop their current and long standing policy of open immigration because they are threatening America as has been demonstrated by 9/11 where the terrorists came into America from Canada. Give us a little help and cooperation Canada. But thats another issue.

Bush threatens Lake Erie, a huge source of drinking water for the Great Lakes States, because our governors formed a Great Lakes States compact to prevent our water from being pipelined to Texas. This strategy, if done, would destroy the Great Lakes and benefit Texas only temporarily while destroying our water supply.

We in the Great Lakes States have hopefully stopped the state of Texas and Bush from controling/taking over our water supply.

During the oil crises of 1973 many in Texas and Louisana expressed, hatefully, such statements as 'let them beg for oil' and 'let them eat oil' and 'let them drink oil'. If Texas needs water they have control of America's oil/energy so they should use some of their vast wealth to build desalination plants and engage in some water conservation just as we have to engage in oil/energy conservation.

We must not forget that the oil/energy industry is holding all Americans hostage. We must not forget that our already stagnant economy has and is suffering greatly because of the Texas oil/energy industry. Just how much longer can these selfish industries hold all Americans hostage to their demands for ever greater wealth.

My guess is the oil/energy/Republican industry will hold the rest of us Americans hostage for at least two or three more decades and quite possibly forever.

The oil/energy industry has a complete stranglehold on America. To me the only solution is to break these monoplies up and force the creation of many small companies. This, of course, will never occur while the Bush family runs our government and while the Republican party dominants all three branchs of government.

When Laura Bush, Condi Rice and Jeb Bush become pres and v-p the oil company dominantion of America will continue and grow.

Possibly when all Americans are strangling over exhorbitant (5-10 dollars per gal.) fuel costs and we are freezing in the winters the 'red state' voters will wake up and throw these people out of office and better yet even in jail for thei greed and selfishness in light of America's downward spiral.

The kingdom of the Bush family, the Republican party, the radical religious right wing fundamentalists(aka America's religious jihadists) both Catholic , my religion, and the white southern Baptists, southern politicians may someday come to an end when they realize that they are not really concerned for America, do not stand up for America, have absolutely no patriotism and whose lives are dominanted by selfishness, greed and political power.

When America can find another pres like Jimmy Carter, the most moral president America has ever had, who was not afraid to stand up to the oil companies and who as an engineer utilized science, not politics, to create solutions for America's energy problems then and only then do we as a nation have a chance at survival.

Meanwhile we Americans continue to fund the repressive Saudi government(Bush family friends) that does not care for it's own people and Osama bin Laden who is funded by the Saudi government and a few other lesser entities. The cabal against America is the Bush family, the Saudi's, the oil industry and bin Laden. These are aided by the Theocrats in American and mislead Republicans.

So 'we the people' who are true patriotic Americans must fight for our oceans, our Great Lakes, our environment, other repressed peoples in the world, American families, education and healthcare for all. We must fight against those who, for their own very narrow, would seek to destroy our country, other countries and peoples.

We must fight for the common good, for the greater good.
