Edwards Pledges to End Poverty
Check out Ezra Klein's firsthand account of John Edwards' speech today, in which the former Senator vowed to make a major, major dent in poverty in the United States and put forward a number of quite serious ideas to accomplish that goal. I assume Edwards will be running for president in 2008, and even if he's not a serious contender, it's nice to see at least one Democrat thinking very seriously about these issues.

Following graduation from law school, John Edwards became an associate at a prominent law firm, where he was widely recognized as a future legal star...
Following his 2004 defeat at the polls, he took on the position of director of the new "Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity" at the University of N. Carolina at Chapel Hill.
My point is that Edwards is a successful trial lawyer, so why doesn't he put his big mouth up against all the big money?
Why doesn't he go to bat for the "poor" local businessmen who are still paying inflated insurance premiums because of the inexplicably poor police response to the King verdict. Was that instance designed precisely to drive local merchants out of business..., so the big boys could come in and take up the slack? One figures a "top gun" like Edwards could remedy such...
Instead he's all about raising the minimum wage, which would be great, except wouldn't it drive the local merchants out of business?
Why not take away Big Oil's tax breaks, and give them to the small businessmen who actually can't afford a $9.00 mimimum wage?
Edwards should make a big splash going after the callous employers who are so much more interested in "saving money" than they are in protecting their worker's health. Isn't this the twenty-first century?
John Edwards, if you want to be the working man's hero, why don't you become the real big advocate for Nationalized Health Insurance?
John get off your rocker and go after the big automakers, like I tried to do (till stopped by blatant felony on the part of the judge). Poor people are more interested in sucking on exhust fumes than they are in zero emission electric cars that can run for FREE (with solar panels)--like Hell! If there ever was a need for an individual to request a grand jury investigation in accordance with Congress's explicit statutory command...
John go after the dirty pesticide manufacturers who have no problema delivering to the Third World countries pesticides that are banned here as being to dangerous...
...Dude, why don't you go out and SAVE SOMEONE--instead of blowing lots of hot air...!
