The Haditha Soundtrack

A lot of ink can, and will, be spilled on what makes young men blow childrens' brains out in a war that doesn't make sense. But a song is worth a thousand words, and there's no more chilling (if unintentional) soundtrack to the news from Iraq these days than a song by a Marine that has lots of defenders on conservative websites.

Now it's worth remembering that there's a long tradition of this kind of thing-there was a song in Vietnam called Napalm Sticks to Kids--and of course it's more metaphor than description; horror breeds its own kind of self-caricature. But what makes it work, what makes the Hadji Girl audience chuckle and guffaw, is how close the horror of caricature is to the horror of reality.

As the bullets began to fly
The blood sprayed from between her eyes
And then I laughed maniacally

Did you hear his "apology?"

"I apologize for any feelings that may have been hurt in the Muslim community. This song was written in good humor and not aimed at any party, foreign or domestic."

It was just a joke.

I guess the fact that the song was about the brutality of the insurgents couldn't be absorbed through your ripe melon. Don't let facts get in the way of a good troop-bashing tale.

I wonder if the author has heard the song or read the lyrics? The song is about the INSURGENTS killing the girl. But I guess that fact doesn't fit into your vicious military hating agenda eh?

Considering that the author of this post links to an LGF post on the topic, one would assume that the author had read some of what those defending the Marine are saying. One would also assume that the author had actually listened to the song, considering the subject of this post. However, that is obviously not the case as the author simply regurgitates the lies that come from CAIR or the MSM.
The actual lyrics can be found at http://www.blackfive.net/main/2006/06/hadji_girl.html. The song tells of insurgents killing their own family members in order to try and kill the Marine. The song is not about US troops killing civilians.

Stop lying about our troops.

All of us who blogged about the song are aware that it is about the insurgents' killing the girls. Though that certainly removes the imperialistic arrogance from one's perception of the song, it does nothing at all to reduce the racism, misogyny or bad taste.

Diane, It's amazing, isn't it, how the quote used in the OP misses out the surrounding lines which give it context?

It is a politicians job to do the touchy feely good relations bit (and yes this is necessary), it's not the job of some poor marine peering through the sights of his M-16 whilst getting shot at to consider the CAIR's feelings about a song he writes. Get a grip (certain) people! This is an amateur home video of some bloke who wrote a song to pass the time between getting shot at, not some political declaration!

Diane:

Where's the racism and misogyny? The last time I noticed, Iraqis and other Arab and Persians are Caucasians. If it is racist to point out that the enemy hides behind women, children, and other noncombatants, then I guess I am racist. As for misogyny, I think you threw that in because you like bashing our troops with any club that is available, whether the bashing is justified or not. As for Monika Bauerlein, she quoted the verse out of context in order to create a misperception. What a dishonest, dishonorable person she is.

Racism was not the word I intended to use, and that's what I get for typing and listening to the So-So Sisters at the same time. Ethnicism was the word I was going for, and I stand corrected.

Posted by: Diane on 06/24/06 at 4:06 PM

It is a pretty funny song IMO. Slightly inappropriate locker room humor. Nothing more.

Try telling that to liberals, though. These people are more horrified over a silly song than over beheadings and terrorist attacks.

BTW, I have to agree with the commentator who suggested the author of this piece hasn't heard the song. She is quoting the exact same lyrics that the AP and CAIR have been quoting out of context for so long now. If she had actually heard the song (or even investigated the issue a little further) she would have noted the lack of context from the beginning.

I also have to suggest that the one screaming misogyny also hasn't heard the song. What exactly is misogynistic about the song? The song makes no particular point about women.

The war is evil. Anyone fighting to maintain the occupation is fighting to advance the cause of evil. The "support the troops" stuff is crap. Support the troops by bringing them home, now.

Actually, I saw the video and heard the song right after it was posted on the Web.

There is a lot of discussion of context in the defense of the video. Yes, it was a "letting off steam" private video, and yes, it is about an American Marine being ambushed--a soldier who is in harm's way.

But to lean on that context, which is tempting, is to ignore the much greater context of the song. First, "Hadji," used in this context, is considered offensive by Muslims because they consider it a Western slight of a sacred part of their religion. So right out the gate, the song is dismissive of Muslims. And the "fun" rage expressed toward the insurgents is not expressed toward an ARMY, an organization, but toward civilians, and particularly female civilians.

A classic way of making the enemy less than human is to focus on their ethnic, religious or racial makeup (it is a given than females are always considered not quite people in all cultures). Though "Hadji" is not as offensive as, say, "gook," the message is clear. An analogy would be the difference between a driver who is cut off by an African American in traffic and says "Bastard!" and one who is cut off by an African American and says "Black bastard!"

As for the insurgency, though it is horrible what is happening in Iraq, it is to be expected when the one country invades another country, destroys its infrastructure and maims and kills thousands of its civilians. It is especially to be expected when the invading country also had no justifiable reason for its actions. A recent survey showed that an alarmingly high percentage of U.S. soldiers in Iraq believe that Saddam Hussein had something to do with the attacks of September 11. I think that says it all.

Diane,

While I still believe your reading of thie incident is a bit tortured and gives too little deference to context, I do appreciate the reasoned argument. Both sides of the political spectrum on the blogosphere need more of your thoughtfulness.

he's a 20 something marine. NO he did't shoot a little kid The only sick little punk is you

Fact is we are in a holy war that has been declared on the west by Islam. If you'ld spend a little time reading the Q'uran perhaps you wouldn't waste so much time worrying about what Muslims think and more about how we are going to win this war.

There is no "Moderate Islam".

Dale, I've read a lot of the Qur'an, and while there are mentions of violence, it'd be a stretch to say that there's anything more shocking in it than can be found in the Bible.

Those angry about the lack of context involved in Ms. Bauerlein's post would do well to go beyond the few injunctions to fight found in the Qur'an to the far greater number of restrictions on when an observant Muslim may or may not resort to violence.

This is not a defense of Islamic extremism (nor of Christian extremism; clinic-bombers are no better than beheaders either in terms of what they do or in terms of how twisted their rationale is) but of Islam in general: like any faith, it is a mixture of many things, and to judge all adherents by the actions of a few is a sore error indeed.
