Homelessness a threat to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan
The government estimates that, on any given night, hundreds of military veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan are homeless. Some cannot adjust after being in a war zone, some cannot navigate federal red tape, and some simply do not have the money to afford a place to live. The problem is the worst in New York City because of the high cost of housing.
The Veterans Administration provides grants to nonprofit housing organizations that provide about 8,000 beds a night across the nation.
Almost half of the U.S.'s disabled veterans receive $337 a month or less in benefits, which makes matters worse. Only those who are classified as 100% disabled receive $2,393 a month, but that group makes up only 10% of all disabled veterans.
Add to this problem the thousands and thousands of homeless Vietnam veterans who were already in the country. Both groups of veterans suffer from high degrees of posttraumatic stress syndrome, in addition to physical handicaps.

Thanks to Diane Dees for this article.
I am not the least bit surprised by this revelation about our vets. I just knew this would happen because it's the exact same thing that happened to our Vietnam war vets.
During that war I became and independant swing voter because of all the government lying about the war and because of the treatment of our vets by our government.
The same thing is being done to our vets by the Bush admin, they are very willing to send our guys off to fight and die but not willing to take care of them when they come back.
If the Bushies, nazi fascist neocons are not willing to give our disabled vets a decent level of life after they are put in harms way and exposed to the horrors of war then those Bushie neocons must not perpetrate war and 'we the people' must stop them from doing it because the vets are ultimately the responsibility of 'we the people' and it is up to us to be sure that our vets are only sent to war as a last resort and only when ALL diplomacy has failed and only when our country is DIRECTLY threatened.
War seems to be the first choice of the Bush nazi neocons not the last. Bush is the CEO of our country and all CEO's who cannot do the job MUST BE REMOVED from their jobs if they cannot perform properly.
Our vets must not be USED because Bush has failed to find a diplomatic solution to a problem. War is nothing more than a failure of diplomacy and any diplomat who fails MUST BE REMOVED from office.
I have never thought of myself as a pacifist but I am becoming one because of the Bush government who dragged our country into war under totally false pretenses.
Come on America lets throw these illegal war perpetrators out of office and into jail for the rest of their lives. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Rice, the nazi fascist neocons, the corporations and the religions that support them must be stopped.
If the oil companies want war let them pay for it and hire their own mercenaries to wage it.
And Bin Laden is still running around free when he should have been captured shortly after 9/11 and would have were it not for Rumsfeld.
Needless to say, I am very angry.
