Why Trust Bill Keller?

Jack Shafer has a very good column today about whether the New York Times should've published its story revealing a semi-classified terror-financing story or not. Understandably, he trusts Bill Keller over the Bush administration. Nothing to disagree with there, although I'm agnostic on the question of whether the article actually harmed national security in any way; reports suggest that details of the SWIFT program were already somewhat public, and I don't plan on taking the word of administration officials on this matter.

But there's another article I've been meaning to link to, concerning the merits of the program in question. like William Greider, I wish the government would actually more to monitor overseas financial transactions; it would be nice if something like SWIFT could be used to clamp down on offshore tax evasion, securities fraud, CEOs looting pension funds, etc. As it is, the U.S. government is incredibly lax on the issue. Sadly, bankers and corporations tend to be hugely influential, so terrorist financing is the only thing that is likely to get any attention.

Headline, NY Times: "Dems see House, Senate takeover in Midterms"
Smaller Headline underneath: "Polls show Democrats favored by 24%"

The NY Times article goes on to say the Democrats will easily take control of the House and Senate in the Midterm elections, because a NY Times poll show the public favors Democrats 56% to 32%.
The only problem is that the article and poll were from October 2002. Hmmmm...what happened in the 2002 Midterm elections?
THAT'S why I don't trust the New York Times....and I'm a Democrat.

Which is to say if their reasonable assumption (as reasonable to make now as it was in October 2002) pans out this time your trust will be restored? Seems this is an indictment of polls more than of the Times' journalism, though of course reporters should know to be skeptical of opinion surveys...

Actually, you're right, Julian. It's more an indictment of polls in general. The Times' poll angered me because it seemed they were reporting what they wanted to see happen rather than reality. I could also cite the Zogby poll on the morning of the 2004 election, where he stated Kerry would win with more than 30 states and 300 electoral votes. He had the numbers right, but just got the candidate wrong. Polls on both sides are being used to propel the base to the voting booths. Rarely are they based on reality anymore...but I guess one could say the same for politics in general!

If any Americans want to know who will win in 2006 just ask the Republican party since they control the elections.

All thanks to 59 million Americans who are holding our country hostage to the desires of the Repub party which has now dominated all life in america since George Bush got elected.

Even if the Dems were to gain some or even total political power They will NOT be able to undo the damage Bush, Repubs and neocons have already done to America. The Dems would have to have total political power for twenty years to accomplish this herculean feat and that seems completely unlikely to occur. The Repub political strategy machine has done so much damage to the Democratic party that they seem quite unlikely to recover.

The Repub political strategy machine could possibly suffer some short term setbacks now and then but in the long run will prevail over and over again. The only people who can stop this machine is the Republican politicians themselves including pols like Mike DeWine of Ohio, and that will never happen they are just not about to put the needs of America before their own cheap desires.

Repubs are Repubs first and Americans last or not at all. And we the people have no power over American politics or the Repub hate machine. They pander to the lowest instincts of enough Americans (59 million) causing them to stay in power unless something very different happens in American politics and I see nothing coming to that effect.

I'm not a fan of the New York Times because they have given in and covered many times for the Bush admin. But I would believe Bill Keller before I would believe any department of our government all of whom engage in endless lying.

To me lying by any politician is absolutely the worst thing they can do to the american people. They have broken a sacred covenant when pols lie to the people who put them in office.

Yes, I would believe Bill Keller before I would believe any member of the Bush government.

I don't know if it's truly a question of whether or not to "trust" Bill Keller. It's more of a question of whether or not people think what he did was anti-American and as one member of Congress has called his actions an act of espionage. Of course, what most people forget (and not sure why) is that the government, on numerous occassions, have told the American public (along with anyone else who reads an American newspaper or watches an American news broadcast or even surfs the internet) that they were going to "follow the money" to try to track terrorists.

Furthermore, I don't think it's fair for **only** the New York Times to be receiving any heat for publishing the story. They were not the only newspaper yet, the government must think that if they focus on one newspaper then the issue will remain at the forefront and therefore deflect from other more serious issues.

There are few newspapers anymore that actually deliver good news to the shrinking subscriber base. I believe that the press has sat back on their haunches for long enough and allowed not only government officials to get away with things that are not only illegal, but immoral, but also big corporations. It's about time that the members of the press start being the watchdogs that the American public were used to having help them know what is going on in not only their government, but in the boardrooms and offices of business and corporations.

So, in essence, yes, I trust Bill Keller.
