Israeli Bombing Results in Massive Lebanon Oil Spill

It looks like an eco-nightmare is taking place on the beaches of Lebanon. Reports coming in say beaches are being clogged with oil because five out of six oil tanks at the electricity plant in Jiyeh were destroyed by Israeli bombs.

The Lebanese Embassy in Washington confirmed the spill. Marwan Francis, second secretary, told Mother Jones, "It is definitely the worst oil spill we [Lebanon] have ever faced.’’

One report says 15,000 tons of fuel oil is spreading into the water and along the coasts. The spill has spread along the northern coasts for some 100 kilometers from the electric plant, according to an email from the Tayyar Organization, a political party. The Lebanese government can’t control the spill. Many Lebanese live along the coast which has numerous resorts. Story (in Arabic) here.

People are being very negative about all the damage coming from this war. Look on the bright side. When all this fighting is over, just think of all the big fat contracts Halliburton can get for reconstructing a ruined Lebanon. Oil spills, shattered hospitals, razed villages, burnt out refineries, blitzed schools, cratered roads, broken bridges, acres of Beirut flattened - the opportunities to make millions, billions even, in nice fat profits that will be there for the picking. And just think how much more money is to be made if the war is prolonged for a couple more weeks.

Go for it Halliburton!

I am an environmental campaigner in Lebanon and I have been following this issue up. The situation is worse than imagined and is threatening the marine life here.
One of the impacted species will be sea turtles. Now is the time when sea turtle nests start to hatch, and small turtles will not be able to reach deep water. Green turtles are endangered in the Mediterranean and this spill will definitely impact the population.

What's most disturbing about this story is that it has not penetrated the american media's network coverage. only msnbc has even covered the story, and that was done on the web only to the best of my knowledge.

Its all just another conflict in the middle east.
I mean really who care's,and if you get tired of it,just change the channel.
As long as a major conflict does'nt break out again in Europe, then just what ever happens, let it happen.
War is just part of the male condition,it always has been and always will be,and thats a fact, and if you don't like it show me otherwise

Israel should not be made to cleanup the oil spill and pay reparation. The United States should simply take those $3billion they give Israel annually, and divert it to rebuild Lebanon. That will probably do more for Israeli security then 100 F16 and bombs.

The extent of the disaster is really tragic. I work for Greenpeace and have just seen some of the footage our team has sent from there.
On the video (link below) you see what the impact has been on the sea bed.

Unfortunately these spills happen more regularly than most people think. My colleague just wrote an article on our website about it. The Filippines also had an oil spill disaster recently. Some more info on that:

Never, ever again should the US give Israel money. We have learned our lesson: Israel uses our billions to kill civilians, destroy houses, and degrade the natural environment. Every single Israeli should be issued a fine of $10,000. The money should be used to clean up the oil spill and rebuild Lebanon.
