Public Ready to Withdraw from Iraq
The New York Times poll about Iraq is pretty stunning. 56 percent of respondents think the United States should "set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq". A whopping 72 percent think the war in Iraq is "making the U.S. image in the world… worse." And 41 percent think the U.S. presence in Iraq is leading to "less stability" in the Middle East (as opposed to a mere 25 percent who thinks it's leading to "greater stability.")
At this point, it appears that any candidate—Democrat or Republican—who truly believes that withdrawing from Iraq is the least bad of the very bad options available has no political reason for refraining from saying so. Meanwhile, on the partisan front, 42 percent of respondents thought that Democrats were "more likely to make the right decisions about the war in Iraq," compared to 36 percent who thought Republicans were more likely to do so. I wonder how those numbers would change if Democrats came out more strongly in favor of a timetable for getting out.
I also wonder how to square this with the fact that, according to a poll published a few days ago, over half the people in this country falsely believe Saddam Hussein had WMDs, and 55 percent of respondents believe that "history will give the U.S. credit for bringing freedom and democracy to Iraq." Maybe they can be reconciled. Maybe polls just show that people are usually quite confused.

Since we don't get very accurate information about Iraq (or the Middle East as a whole) here in the US, how can polls be trusted to give any kind of accurate read on related trends? IMHO the best polls can reflect is the confusion between the official story and the truth that leaks through now and then.

Americans wake up? Don't count on it as the US-Israeli arm slaughters Lebanese people and Cheney & Rumsfield salivate over the prospects of the coming bombardment of Iranian people. The American public's short attention span can't be focused on Iraq much longer; you need more action in the plot.

Replace the word democracy with the word capitalism and it all begins to make sense. American citizens are slowly stirring awake to realize that their government is operated by corporations. President Bush is akin to Prince Charles, minus the good manners, and eloquent mind. If you want to know who is making policy in this country, who is deciding our foreign policy, and who is publishing the briefs recommending the next chess move in this game called globalization, then you must research the think tanks that supply these decisions and recommendations to our "elected" leadership. Ask who funds them. Follow the money. No one wants to look behind the curtain, because it so much easier to blame "The Wizard". Research the word "externalities" as it applies to corporations. Monies from the public trust have funded this war and corporations will benefit the most financially. Creating an economic avenue into the Middle East is expensive, but if corporations, through control of the government, are able to externalize the costs of building these new economic inroads by utilizing monies from the public trust and the use of the military, then their costs are minimal and they only stand to profit. Research the contracts that have been signed for the rebuild of Iraq. This is not about democracy. It is about spreading free markets so that corporations can swell their bottom lines and appear ever more attractive to shareholders each quarter. It is about economic exploitation. Forget the oil, it is not about using the oil, it is about controlling it. The idea is to become a power broker in the area. It places Europe, Russia, and China at our economic mercy because we will control the shut off valves on the flow of oil out of the region. It is not about discounts on gasoline for American drivers. It is about power. Billions more will be made in the rebuild. Ask yourself if this makes more sense than the democracy propaganda we have been listening to for four years. Do you really think the United States plans to allow free elections to take place in Iraq. We are not that sloppy. Elected leaders will be the "Yes" men that we have approved. They get to lead. We get to control the oil. That's world politics folks, it is not about freedom. It is about power. Unfortunately, the have not's are suffering in the midst of these struggles just as they always have. My sympathy goes out to each and every Iraqi citizen caught in the middle of this power struggle. I can see and hear your tears from half a world away, and you are not forgotten.
