Neocon Max Boot: Current Bush Strategy in Iraq Isn't Working
Whoa! Not quite on the level of Francis Fukuyama's showy disavowal of neoconsersavative groupthink, but not far off: Max Boot (a neoconservative who has long pushed for more US troops in Iraq and who recently argued that we should "let Israel take off the gloves" -- what gloves?) has this to say in the Los Angeles Times:
But there's another course short of withdrawal: reducing U.S. forces from today's level of 130,000 to under 50,000 and changing their focus from conducting combat operations to assisting Iraqi forces. The money saved from downsizing the U.S. presence could be used to better train and equip more Iraqi units. A smaller U.S. commitment also would be more sustainable over the long term. This is the option favored within the U.S. Special Forces community, in which the dominant view is that most American soldiers in Iraq, with their scant knowledge of the local language and customs, are more of a hindrance than a help to the counterinsurgency effort.
Make no mistake: This is a high-risk strategy. The drawdown of U.S. troops could catalyze the Iraqis into getting their own house in order, or it could lead to a more rapid and violent disintegration of the rickety structure that now exists.
Which path should we take? My preference remains deploying more soldiers, not fewer. A couple of divisions in Baghdad, if skillfully led, might be able to replicate the success that Col. H.R. McMaster's 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment had in pacifying the western city of Tall Afar, where the troops-to-civilians ratio was 10 times higher than in Baghdad today. But at this point, I am also open to a substantial reduction in troop numbers because the current strategy just isn't working.
Next up...?

I'll bet $100 that, within 1 year, we will hear something to the effect of "military force does indeed work against terrorism; we just didn't implement it correctly (in Iraq)".

Boot's "ideas" are transparently ridiculous. At one pole, to treat Baghdad like Tall Afar would require 260,000 US troops, about twice as many as there are in the whole country. (Source: Cheryl Seal, http://cherylsealreports.com/Bushpotemkinvillage.html).
At the other, only armchair generals are wont to leap at 'risky' strategies which have a significant probability of catastrophic failure.
Mindless swaggering. Why does anyone listen to this man?

Why don't we deploy Max Boot to clean up Iraq? I've long suspected that his name alone, which sounds like the worst sort of Nazi gestapo, would scare the insurgents into submission.

I agree that it is esy to be a Monday morning quarterback and that there is no one person who has the complete and full answer to any political issues anywhere, but isn't it the point of discourse to air divergent ideas, to express a thought? Afterall, this blog isn't a meeting of the world leaders [we'd all probably do just about as well as they do].
America is all about different opinions - there's even a place for our friend, John, to sound off, even if he isn't very original.
'Peasants'? It's so sad to see a D&D enthusiast go down a bitter road.

Paul, You certainly are correct when you say "America is all about different opinions". BUT, the only opinions that are heard in America are those of the Republicans and the nazi-fascist neocons who have a total stranglehold over the 241 million od us who did not vote for Bush, the neocons, Big Business or the theocrats.
The 59 million who voted for the Bush crime family have all the power while the rest of us have none because the Dems have been neutralized and our 'system of checks and balances' is gone. We now have ONE PARTY RULE in America just as Hitler did in Germany.
And this one party uses Hitlerian(Rovian) tactics on everyone who does not agree with them and that includes 241 million Americans. Just as Hitler attacked, dehumanized and vilified Jews, books, reasoning and science the Republicans and neocons do exactly the same thing to the rest of us in America. George Bush hates reasoning, the MSM, science and books and ideas. Remember Bush's family were bankers for the nazi party, Silesian Coal and Silesian Steel etc.etc.etc.

End the genocide in Darfur
Every day, Darfuris face rape, murder, and starvation. Be a Voice for Darfur: tell Obama to end the suffering.

Oh Jeeez. This means nothing. He didn’t address what story to tell our stupid peasants. Sending in “special forces” will just turn the war more into a covert ops scenario. This will let the males on our side to murder more of THEIR peasants. Eventually (say 5 years), the “army dudes” would need to be sent in to “clean up the mess”. Nope, if you liberals are fantasizing about fascist males changing their minds all you’ve got to do is talk so some of them about Vietnam (and AGAIN, I’m talking about REAL ‘mericans, not liberal pansies from SF, REAL ‘mericans, from Concord). They’ll tell you what we shoulda done in Vietnam (hitches up pants, grabs crotch). “Yeah, we weren’t allowed to win that war, god-damn hippies…” You liberals are all the same, your like religious fanatics, waiting for “the truth” to enlighten people.
