"People here in the U.S. don't understand these things about constitutional rights"
That's what a Jordan-born man says he was told by airport security personnel when they asked him to remove his T-shirt before boarding a flight to California at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The man, whose name is Raed, says he was told "People are feeling offended because of your T-shirt." Raed was wearing a shirt that said in both Arabic and English, We Will Not Be Silent. He was asked to put on another shirt instead, but all of his other shirts were in his checked baggage.
"Isn't it my constitutional right to express myself in this way?" was Raed's question, to which one of the security people replied, ""People here in the U.S. don't understand these things about constitutional rights" Raed's answer: "I live in the U.S., and I understand it is my right to wear this T-shirt."
"You can't wear a T-shirt with Arabic script and come to an airport. It is like wearing a T-shirt that reads 'I am a robber' and going to a bank," was the security man's rejoinder.
Raed explained that he bought the shirt in Washington, D.C. and that they are available in a number of languages. He was told that without a translator, people did not know what the shirt said. "But as you can see, the statement is in both Arabic and English," Raed explained, but securiety personnel had yet another reply: "Maybe it is not the same message."
Raed was asked to wear his T-shirt inside-out, which he refused to do. Security offered to buy him another T-shirt that he could wear over the one he had on. He agreed to do that if they could show him a law that prohibited his wearing his own shirt. He asked to see a supervisor, but was not allowed to; he was told there had been numerous complaints about his shirt. He did not want to miss his flight, so he allowed a woman from his airline to buy him another T-shirt. She innocently asked if he would like to have an I Love New York shirt, and one of the security people said, "No, we shouldn't ask him to go from one extreme to another."
Raed did ask the man why, if he had Arabic script on his T-shirt, did that mean he hated New York? This time, he received no reply. He went to board the plane, and discovered his seat, which he had booked four weeks in advance, had been taken from him. He was seated in the very back.
Raed's final comment: "I grew up under authoritarian governments in the Middle East, and one of the reasons I chose to move to the U.S. was that I don't want an officer to make me change my T-shirt."
Well, Raed--welcome to Amurika.

Y'know, Raed offered phone numbers people could call to give customer comments to Jet Blue about the incident.
I was going to, but then I declined rather than find myself later "mysteriously" placed on a no-fly list. I'm not a coward. I'm just forced to pick my battles. I got bills to pay and my health to worry about.
But MoJo, please DO contact JetBlue. You have the power to do so. And fewer consequences to worry about.

Well notlib, it ain't al Queda who has been stripping us of our constitutional rights in the name of the 'war on terror'. Nor is it al Queda who has been driving the 'great' US of A into bankruptcy. Nor has it been al Queda who for the past several years has been doing the most to foment hatred throughout the world against the US of A.
I believe that all of these greatly imperil the USA, far more than anything that al Queda is capable of. This country used to believe that 'we have nothing to fear but fear itself' But George Bush has declared quite clearly that we should be very afraid, and you clearly have bought into that. We *must* be very afraid of al Queda because otherwise bin Laden will destroy the great US of A. To believe that is to deny the indominable American spirit, to deny that as a nation we have the courage to 'fear nothing but fear itself'. George Bush and his administration are the antithesis of what America the Great used to stand for.

I hope he got names and badge numbers so each officer involved loses their job.

It is sad that the American voter on the street does not know the difference between the Bill of Rights and the 10 Commandments.
We are losing our rights because most of us don't realize we have any to begin with.
Education is the only answer to American freedoms and our kids have been dumbed down for 40 years.

Raed's rights were violated, and this type of thing is happening in this country every day. "Save Our Democracy - Impeach George Bush" is the bumper sticker I made up & put on my car. We really need to vote out the Republicans, and reform campaign finance so that we can get our country back from these ultra-wealthy, hypocritical, paranoid, fascist, biggots running it now....(am I being too harsh?) Time to take our country back before it's too late!

Wait a sec…. Liberals spend 30 years systematically removing all content of value from the schools, unwaveringly support incompetent “teachers” in order to “maintain solidarity” with union management slime, and are NOW complaining that the average middle-class white-trash is clueless about philosophy?!
Well, I hope you guys are enjoying the fruits of your labors. Hey, I know, lets make the government BIGGER so when the fascists get control next time, it will be even MORE fun.

Dear John,
FYI (you must be a victim of that liberal education system)...our constitutional rights are not a "philosophy", but rather part of our law. And the real issue here is that one security guard's racism almost kept a paying customer from boarding a plane, based on his attire alone. We also have anti-discrimination laws in this country, of which you may not have been aware.
I'm not sure what article you read, but your response makes me think you were unable to read the one that you commented on, since there was no relation between your comments and the article.

Well, sadly, law IS philosophy. Ask the following question of a typically mean fascist Republican and a typically guilt-ridden socialist Democrat: “Is it better to have a lawful society or a just society?”. The answers will be different.
Knowing why the answers are different is was it USED to mean to have a liberal education. A liberal education now means being un-educated (but empowered, surely).
Something tells me you aren't "average" middle-class white trash. You need to get out with the REAL middle-class white-trash to find out though.

That Raed is Salam Pax's cousin. Otherwise I bet we'd never have heard about this incident.

John frequently gets off subject and tries to use the blog format to spew his antiliberal sentiment rather than offering insightful commentary.
It is the typical, dualist thinker who believes that the just society and the lawful one are incompatable. I would like to know what logical proof John might want to share for why lawfulness and justice can only exist in seperate societies and governments.
But the arguments that John puts forth herein are like all from him that I've seen in the last few weeks, strong on anger and weak on substance.
After all, how could any American who understands what values our founders fought to put into our constitution, have anything but criticism of how Raed was treated?

What was that Tom Hanks movie about a guy trapped in an Amerikan airport for 9-months coz his country was in civil war so he was essentially Stateless (incidentally, surely a form of perfection to a libertarian:-)? If Raed was a naturalised yank, could he have refused to change his t-shirt, refused to leave the building, coz had valid ticket, and camped out with the media for days/weeks to show what an utter bunch of buffons the TSA is? Surely it would be a circus! Demonstrating his keen understanding of capitalism, Raed could CREATE a series of increasingly vitrolic (yet legal) t-shirts, marketing them on the back of his growing reputation, through the net. What a circus!!!

What makes neo-cons like John think civil rights fall under the Liberal party line? Does it not occur to him that the rights we used to enjoy here as Americans were for every American even deluded ones of his ilk? Futher, does it not occur to those of his ilk if we lose our civil rights here in America he will no longer be able to spew anti-liberal statements to anyone again?
By the way, George W. Bush IS more dangerous than al-queda could ever be to Americans. Believe it.

These problems with al Qaeda, global "terrorism" and the U.S. calling themselves the good guys has shown with glaring clarity the vacancy of mind in which some have fallen. CNN wanted to prove how dangerous even cell phones have become and how they can be used by the bad guys. So they took one of these devices filled with "explosives" and made it detonate. The tremendous blast sounded more like a child farting. I guess these treacherous Middle Easterners would have to take a whole bunch of them -say 3000- to blow up a plane. Of course, it is also possible to cause an explosion with the flatulences (I think some people have tested this possibility) in which case I imagine again these devious Arabs eating all kinds of beans without relieving themselves for several days. They could then take a plane and, well, it would be necessary just a little match and...

Wow, what an embarrasingly pathetic article.
I didn't believe that liberals REALLY thought Bush was more dangerous than al Qaeda, I guess I was wrong.
What a joke. Good luck running on that in the election libs.
