What if the Towers Hadn't Come Down on 9/11?
Tom Engelhardt has the cover story in the new issue of The Nation, a reconsideration of the American response to the 9/11 attacks five years after the event. In it, he asks:
What if the two hijacked planes, American Flight 11 and United 175, had plunged into those north and south towers at 8:46 and 9:03, killing all aboard, causing extensive damage and significant death tolls, but neither tower had come down? What if, as a Tribune columnist called it, photogenic "scenes of apocalypse" had not been produced? What if, despite two gaping holes and the smoke and flames pouring out of the towers, the imagery had been closer to that of 1993? What if there had been no giant cloud of destruction capable of bringing to mind the look of "the day after," no images of crumbling towers worthy of Independence Day?
As he points out, "Americans were already imagining versions of September 11 soon after the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945." Hence, the instinctive recourse to World War II analogies. "No wonder the events seemed so strangely familiar," he writes. "We had been living with the possible return of our most powerful weaponry via TV and the movies, novels and our own dream-life" for 50-plus years.
But here's the catch: What came, when it came, on September 11, 2001, wasn't what we thought came. There was no Ground Zero, because there was nothing faintly atomic about the attacks. It wasn't the apocalypse at all. Except in its success, it hardly differed from the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center, the one that almost toppled one tower with a rented Ryder van and a homemade bomb.
OK, the truck of 1993 had sprouted wings and gained all the power in those almost full, transcontinental jet fuel tanks, but otherwise what "changed everything," as the phrase would soon go, was a bit of dystopian serendipity for Al Qaeda: Nineteen men of much conviction and middling skills, armed with exceedingly low-tech weaponry and two hijacked jets, managed to create an apocalyptic look that, in another context, would have made the special-effects masters of Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic proud. And from that -- and the Bush administration's reaction to it -- everything else would follow.
The tiny band of fanatics who planned September 11 essentially lucked out. If the testimony, under CIA interrogation techniques, of Al Qaeda's master planner Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is to be believed, what happened stunned even him. ("According to the [CIA] summary, he said he ‘had no idea that the damage of the first attack would be as catastrophic as it was.'") Those two mighty towers came crumbling down in that vast, roiling, near-mushroom cloud of white smoke before the cameras in the fashion of the ultimate Hollywood action film (imagery multiplied in its traumatizing power by thousands of replays over a record-setting more than ninety straight hours of TV coverage). And that imagery fit perfectly the secret expectations of Americans -- just as it fit the needs of both Al Qaeda and the Bush administration.

The WTC Towers could have survived if they met the NYC Fire Code
If the WTC Towers had been built the way they were supposed to be they would not have fallen (according to the original designs from to the Port Authority's response to the public's fears during the debates before construction began).
The WTC Towers were supposed to have a fire suppression system that was to be able to handle the fire caused by a direct collision by a Boeing 707 airliner.
Since the Empire State Building had already been hit twice by airplanes (a small biplane and a B29 bomber) the prediction was that the WTC towers would have a 100% chance of being hit by a large aircraft. The Boeing 707 was the largest airliner at the time the WTC Towers were being designed.
The Boeing 707 airliner carries 10,000 gallons of Jet Fuel while the Boeing 757 airliners that struck the WTC Towers carry 24,000 gallons of Jet Fuel. Both airliners have a top speed of 600-650mph and weigh about the same. The structure of a Boeing 707 is significantly denser than a Boeing 757 due to the use of older technology for the airframe that used heavy machined aluminum structures in the body and wings. The damage caused by the impacts would therefore be similar.
The ammount of fuel that contributed to the fires that ultimately caused the failure of the remaining structure was probably less than 25% of the total fuel in the Boeing 757's or 6,000 gallons. The rest of the fuel passed through the WTC Towers and out the opposite side and formed a fireball outside of the buildings.
The Jet Fuel was atomized by the impact forces spraying fuel out of the cracks in the tanks and by turbulence effects as the mixture of fuel, air and the parts of the 757 passed through the WTC Towers and out the other side.
The fuel that remained in the WTC Towers was the portion of the spray that was able to wet the surfaces of objects as the blast passed through and the portion of the spray that remained suspended in the air afterwards. The fuel mist was probably too rich to burn until more air had a chance to flow back into the buildings through the broken windows, therefor there was no fuel explosion within the WTC Towers. The backdraft flame that is visible on the video of the WTC Towers causes a very soft wavefront that does not cause any explosive damage unless it is confined by solid walls (which were not there by then).
At that point, the sprinkler system should have been fully activated and the sprinkler spray should have been able to keep the temperature in the burning floors low enough so the structural steel would not have been weakened.
The WTC Towers were designed before Engineers understood how fireballs form in high speed collisions so they did not expect the fuel to pass through the towers and out the other side. The original plans presumed that all 10,000 gallons of fuel from a 707 would stay in the Towers and the sprinkler system in the plans was sized to handle the expected fire. When the Towers were bombed, it was discovered that the original sprinkler design had been deleted before the Towers were built and later a sub-standard sprinkler system had been retrofitted.
According to my calculations, a sprinkler system with a flow rate of 350-1500 Gallons Per Minute would have been able to completely absorb the total Heat of Combustion of 6,000 gallons of Jet Fuel burning at a rate of 1,500 gallons per hour.
Jet Fuel is predominantly Decane with a small percentage of Naptha. The Decane/Naptha mix has a density between 0.75 and 0.8 times the density of water and a total Heat of Combustion of between 31,300 and 33,550 Kilo Calories per Gallon.
Water at 20 degrees celcius (68 farenhight) has a total Heat of Vaporization of 2,347 Kilo Calories per Gallon so a minimum of 15 gallons of water is required to absorb the total Heat of Combustion of 1 gallon of Jet Fuel.
If 6,000 gallons of Jet Fuel burned in 1 hour the required sprinkler flow would be 1500 gallons per minute total per floor. If only 25% of the fuel burned each hour the required flow would be about 375-450 gallons per minute total per floor. These flow rates are easilly achieved by commercial/industrial sprinkler systems.
Adequate sprinklers would have kept temperature on the burning floors of the WTC Towers below 250 degrees centigrade, well below the 800 degree centigrade failure temperature for the structural steel. At that temperature, the steel would not fail even if all of the cladding had been blown off.

Without the collapse of the towers:
1. First responders would have been able to radio first hand accounts of the damage they witnessed while attempting to save lives
2. Investigators could have examined actual airplane wreckage rather than bits of debris in order to determine the facts surrounding the crime
3. The Project for a New American Century Administration wouldn't have had it's "Pearl Harbour" with which it could manipulate the US populace into accepting its corporatist (fascist?) agenda
4. Television viewers worldwide would have been denied the opportunity to watch a controlled demolition
5. Terrorism expert John O'Neil would still be alive to maybe tell us who actually did it.
WITH the destruction of the Twin Towers, evidence of the crime scene was blown to bits and buried in rubble. Damn convenient, too. Boy those guys were smart! I wonder how they blew up WTC 7?

There was no "controlled demolition". See the recent NIST report, among other sources.

So glad that I'm not alone in feeling [as I have for 4 years] that there was something fishy about this whole, horrible thing. As a non-religious person, I understand why religions have always believed in evil because some human actions are so hard to explain that this catchall is most easily applied.

Dear Bleeding Imbacile Who Wrote This Article,
Maybe you should considering start out with the facts. For instance it was a fucking 767 not 757 you jackass and a 767 is a hell of alot bigger then a 757 or 707 combined, finally tower 7 cojntrolled demo come on if they wanted to rid of 7 they would not drop the two largest towers next it? That would be a huge fucking waste of money time and effort. If they wanted to rid of 7 they would have put a bomb in it. Meaning singular not 200 black suites go in overnight and wire the fucking place. Get air you pinheads
