Cheney: Domestic Debate Encouraging Terrorists
About that politicizing-the-war-on-terror business.
Vice President Cheney offered a veiled attack yesterday on critics of the administration's Iraq policy, saying the domestic debate over the war is emboldening adversaries who believe they can undermine the resolve of the American people.
"They can't beat us in a stand-up fight -- they never have -- but they're absolutely convinced they can break our will, [that] the American people don't have the stomach for the fight," Cheney said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
The vice president said U.S. allies in Afghanistan and Iraq "have doubts" the United States will finish the job there. "And those doubts are encouraged, obviously, when they see the kind of debate that we've had in the United States," he said. "Suggestions, for example, that we should withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq simply feed into that whole notion, validates the strategy of the terrorists."
With us or against us, eh?

Why in the world would anyone listen to Dick (the quail hunter) Cheney? Certainly nobody takes him seriously anymore.

Most Americans now realize that our inept leaders in the White House are encouraging the terrorists.

The phrase "stand-up fight" says it all. What difference does it make that we can "lick" them in the type of fight they have no intention of engaging in and not in the type they do engage in?
Has this man learned nothing from Vietnam?

Everybody knows Vietnam was lost because you pansy liberals wouldn’t let us win!! What message do you think is being formed in the gullible “minds” of the peasants right now? You questioned the party? You questioned Jesus. The evil-doers win. To your average semi-illiterate peasant American, all the dots are connected.

Cheney actually he brings up a valid point. This brand of terrorism as an ideology aims to inspire fear, unrest, and a bitter divide between the American people. When people refuse to listen to one another, when anti-war advocates write off all actions of the government without consideration solely because they disagree with the policy of going to war, when citizens ruthlessly bash their leaders (often times for such superficial qualities as their hunting preferences, vocabularies, etc), when we fight so intensely with one another that a dichotomy is created among our own people, then the terrorists have achieved a marginal victory. One of their objectives all along has been to undermine the American people and promote chaos. In constantly bickering with one another and launching bitter campaigns against the government's actions, people's loss of faith in the government equals calamity which equals a success for terrorists. In addition, the constant forcing of a dichotmy does not present a united front. This is not to say everybody has to agree with every decision made by the government; but much of the anti-war resentment directed towards the government which goes on to negatively impact our ability to win it has stemmed from non-war-related issues. Just a thought - maybe we should consider the substance of Cheney's message before writing it off because he is pro-War, a Republican, etc.

So Cheney says we should be good Americans and can the debate? Sounds more like tyranny than democracy to me. Democracy is supposed to be about debate and airing diferences of opinion. When it comes to encouraging the terrorists, I'm sure our anti-wrong-war attitude encourages the terrorists much less than Bush's "Bring it on!" remark, or the Repubs penchant for labelling any one who disagrees with them a traitor. They are the ones who besmirch the ideals of a democratic society.

So J, by your logic, were it not for the terrorist attacks then we would currently be engaging in polite, effective political debates, our leaders would not be crticized for their actions, and no one would be upset if our government decided to wage a multi-billion war on false pretenses?
If the true goal of the terrorists was to deepen the political divide in America, then their main attack wasn't taking down the WTC, but rather creating a situation that our current leaders are too inept to deal with, thus forcing us to "ruthlessly bash" them for their incompetence. Yes Dick, apparently the terrorists did win.

When the colonist fought the British in America, they didn't play by British rules...did they? Didn't they use "monkey-tatics"(gurilla) when confronting the enemy?
They employed the same tatics that the Indians employeed against them in the western settlements.
The old saying still holds true, doesn't it?

I can't get behind you either, J. because this isn't about picking on little old Cheney. Americans have been a quarrelsome dichotomy since our inception as an independant nation. To even get our Constitution ratified, all kinds of compromise and cajoling had to occur on both sides. We can't be expected to throw out our freedom to argue, debate and to fault our politicians. However, the most effective way Americans can speak their minds is through their votes, and sadly the questionable [voter-fraud]majority seems to favor war, sky-rocketing national deficit and pushing around the poor residents of the Big Easy. I can only hope that this November, we see some shifts. It's starting to feel like there will never be a balance of powers again.

The terrorists won the moment our civil liberties were eroded. Period. They were enabled by going in to Iraq "on the cheap" with a reduced force unable to provide stability and control. The aministration strangely benefits from the drawn out "War on Terror" providing the means to instill fear in the populace, which makes the populace easier to control. Instead of making the terrorists lives terrible, the average American has been made to suffer.
The rich are fat and happy, indulging themselves in the desperation of the unpriveleged middle class. Hows that 9.00/hr. job sound when your monthly nut is $2,000.00? Oh, and you better start saving $1,000.00 a month to fortify your diminished Social Security benefits, pay your own Health Care and provide record profits to every unchecked corporation. The government of the people, for big business. Its over people. The dream is dead. America has dissappeared like the city of Atlantis, washed away by wave after wave of greed.
