Romney to ("Terrorist") Khatami: Drop Dead
It's true that Mohammed Khatami, as President of Iran, failed to live up to his early promise as a reformer. (And let's face it, that was always going to be a tough gig.) But to call him a "terrorist," as Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney is noisily doing, seems a touch histrionic.
Governor Mitt Romney declared yesterday he would not allow any state resources to be used to protect a former Iranian president during his visit to the Boston area this weekend, and he sharply criticized Harvard University for inviting Mohammed Khatami to speak on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"There are people in this state who have suffered from terrorism, and taking even a dollar of their money to support a terrorist is unacceptable," Romney, a potential candidate for the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nomination, said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Khatami will give a lecture titled "Ethics of Tolerance in the Age of Violence," which, yes, is ironic given his country's unimpressive record on the former and prolific contributions to the latter. But of course Romney wants to be president, so we should get used this kind of winking demagoguery, and not only from him. (Sigh.) Meanwhile, how the anti-terrorist cause will be served by Khatami's getting popped in Harvard Yard remains unclear.

Not sure I'd go quite that far, but there is something very pseudo about Romney's outrage. He wants to get in the news, of course...

Only Harvard intellectuals wouldn't see the irony of inviting a man who cracked down on and jailed dissenting students at Tehran University to speak of tolerance. Tolerance for what, practicing radical Islam and nothing else? Considering Iran's restrictions on Western music, dress, and of course freedom of expresssion (many of those students are still in jail), I can't find anything they are tolerant of, except for acquiring a nuclear arsenal. What a blessing from Allah that would be! Nothing more needs to be explained. Armageddon it. PS I'd say Iran should invite former President Clinton to speak at Tehran U, but I don't see how he'd say anything different from Khatami. Iran good, Bush bad. Oh, well. No good deed goes unpunished!

RE Bob D'Amico/WWJD: I personally am not a Christian, but to my understanding it is Christians who try to preserve life in the face of campaigns against the unborn and the infirm, like Maria Schaivo, where it is liberal extremists who can't seem to kill them fast enough for their liking. Schaivo's condition before her death was beside the point, the point is intent. As for wanting to kill all Muslims, I doubt that's in Romney's character, but I have no doubt that killing all the infidels is tops on Khatami's list. Or are you telling me this Iranian paragon of virtue and puppetmaster of Hezbollah doesn't have innocent blood on his hands? This whole situation reminds me of the diplomats who, once having sat down to tea with Hitler, pronounced him a sensible, reasonable and even charming man. I guess Harvard accepted Khatami to speak because Satan's schedule wouldn't permit it. I think they've listened to Sympathy For The Devil and tugged on bongs once too often. But what do I know? I'm not from HAHVAHD! I'm not an intellectual. I'm a neanderthal caveman brute who makes ignorant decisions based on only the facts and the truth, not nuance. Otherwise, why can't I see tha halo on Khatami's head?
Or the horns on Bush's? PS Do you know if Harvard's planning a big celebration with Khatami at midnight on September 11th after their post-lecture brie and wine bruncheon? I'm sure they'll blow the walls out - HA! :)

Bryan makes an unintentionally ironic point. President Bush has held American citizens without charges or access to a lawyer for years. See the Padilla case. What is the moral difference between what Bush has done on American soil and what Khatami has done in Iran? What freedom do we have in America? Standing up for freedom here is the duty of all citizens. Where do you stand Bryan and John?

Khatami was a reformer in Iran, and students were the base of his support. What is unfortuante is that he is the one who gets the heat from the rest of the world for "his" crackdown on student protestors.
What most of you obviously do not realize is that the real power in Iran is not in the President, but in the "Supreme Leader" - the extremist Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Khatami, believe it or not, is surprisingly pro-Western. But of course, most members of my political party are blinded by religion and do not realize this.

Your kidding with the pro-ayatholla(sp) comments right? You are attempting to provoke conversation right? I think that you could not possibly be serious in insisting that the head crackpot is civilized....to harsh? This man led a nation that wants to lead in the death of the west....that includes all you libs. Wake up and take your own side in this fight, but then again I am but a simplistic neanderthal myself.

Mohammed Khatami surprised many today by announcing he will marry long-time friend and live in same-sex partner Ahmed Bruce Al-Zahoowee. It is rumoured that the two lovebirds will make a surprise appearance this fall on the hit Iranian television series "Queer Eye for the Terrorist Guy".

Good one, Sly! "And what do we have behind door 2? Is it: a weapon of mass destruction, a poisonous gas, or the grand prize: a gay former leader!
Posted by: Tony on 09/13/06 at 8:48 AM
That is neither funny nor smart, Sly. Respect the man's sexual orientation, otherwise you're nothing better than "the terrorist guy".

Some good will and dialogue could be promoted via this situation. But of course Mitt (Mitt?, strange name)being a typical republican probably wants to kill all muslims.
The killer pro-death christians always seem to be on the side of killing. It just doesn't make any sense, WWJD.
