They've known about Foley for almost a YEAR?

One of the many questions that beg answering in the Foley disaster: How exactly, now that we've all lived through a decade's worth of Catholic priest scandal and outrage over institutional hierarchy whitewashing--how, after all that, do you go from late 2005 to September 2006 convincing yourself that "suspiciously friendly" emails from a powerful man to a teenage boy are not a problem? How, Bishop Hastert?

Now for the cluelessness sweepstakes:

Rich Galen, a Republican political strategist, worried that voters might lump Foley's name with former representatives Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio), Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.), all of whom were forced to resign or were indicted amid various scandals this year.

No, Rich. You'd be lucky if people thought this was only as bad as Ney/DeLay/Duke.

"Bishop Hastert" -- I like that! Now I'm looking forwad to the spectacle of the Republicans being sued for covering up paedophilia and having to pay billions in compensation. Maybe they'll need to sell off unused federal buildings to pay the damages. They've already sold off the Capitol. But who am I kidding? They'll just pass legislation making it illegal to sue about paedophilia coverups...

Mate, I am SO glad I emigrated from America. (My wife and I are liberals who actually DID leave.) There's no hope. See you after the revolution. If either of us should live that long...

The problem I see here is that these congressmen and senators have an unspoken agreement that they will cover for each other just like Catholic priests don't tell what they know. They're protecting each other. I believe when the FBI "broke into" that Louisana's senator's office and found thousands of dollars in his freezer it scared alot of legislators because they know what they have in their offices. We have a very corrupt bunch in Washington and that's why Bush can get them to compromise our constitutional rights. We need to get rid of them!

It looks like the Congress will now have to get together and pass a law that will make the actions of Foley legal. They are doing it with the torture issue, why not this too. God help us.
