Independent Panel Says Yes--Santa Susana Site Caused Cancer

A report released yesterday indicates that a nuclear reactor meltdown at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in 1959 may indeed have caused hundreds of cancers to appear in the surrounding community. Santa Susana is located in eastern Ventura County, California.

An independent advisory panel reported that radiation released during the meltdown caused about 260 cancers within a 60-square-mile radius. The panel also said there was an outside chance that 1,800 cancers could have been caused by the meltdown.

Rocketdyne, the company which owned Santa Susana at the time of the meltdown, has joined the federal government in refusing to release many key details of the incident, so the panel relied on technical modeling to gather its results. The result of the meltdown has been a controversy for many years, with Rocketdyne repeatedly declaring that the amount of radioactive released was insignificant.

The panel concluded that local groundwater and soil has also been contaminated because of the Santa Susuana site. Perchlorate, a factor in the development of thyroid problems, was found in a nearby well, but Boeing says that the substance did not come from its lab. Boeing did, however, pay $30 million in damages last year when residents declared that pollutants had given them cancer.

Whom would I speak to in order to find out more about Santa Susana test site? I along with my wife have lived in the area for most of our 40 plus years. We both have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I myself was diagnosed about two years and her just this past month???

I was born in Canoga Park in 1969 and lived there until about 1973, I am now 37 years old and have developed Papillary Thyroid cancer. I had a hari analysis done and it revealed high levels of Uranium in my hair sample. I beleive this is a direct result of living in Canoga Park at a sensitive time in my development and being exposed to the fall out from Santa Susana Field Lab. I am looking for others who share the same demographics , ie date of birth in the early to late 1960's, living in Bell Canyon, West Hills, Dayton Canyon, Woodland Hills, Simi Valley, Chatswort, Canoga Park, Hidden Hills , Santa Susana Knolls, Sage Ranch or Brandies-Bardin areas, and recently diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer. Please email me if you fall into this category. I am considering a class acttion law suit for us the " under represented demographic "

My Family moved to Canoga Park abt 1964. My parents then bought a house on the corner of Santa Susana Pass Road and Box Canyon Road. This was abt 1967. We lived here until 1971. My Dad died 1989 he had cancer of the larynx and lymphoma of the parotid gland, he was 69 yrs old. My Mother died 1995 age 78, death certificate states "thyroid insufficiency". My brother died 2005, Melanoma in the brain, lungs and liver, he was 56 yrs old. My other brother died 2006, with complete cardiovascular failure, he also had a skin cancer. Both myself and sister have health issues. I definately would like to speak with you Julie about this situation. I live in N.CA and I just learned about this news in Feb 2007.
The house water supply was from a well.
I have quite a few people just from my circle of family friends that have serious health issues relating to living in these areas. Everything from Brain cancer to Hodgkins Disease.
Please email me

I lived on Hanna Ave near Nevada Elementry for almost 20 years. My dad died of a brain tumor and my sister survives her brain tumor. Now what?
