Hobbit Fans Unleash Geek Fury on Rick Santorum

Yesterday, Sen. Rick Santorum tried to explain the war in Iraq by drawing an analogy to the Lord of the Rings:

As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else.... It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States.

Really, Santorum should have known better. By invoking LOTR, he was inviting the scrutiny of hordes of Tolkien fans, who, sure enough, are unleashing their fantasy-lit fury on him. First off, Santorum called it the Eye of Mordor, when it's really the Eye of Sauron. Jeeze! Scott Rosenberg exposes more flaws in Santorum's comments:

First of all, in Tolkien's saga, the good guys are outgunned and outmanned by the Dark Lord, whereas in our world, the U.S. is a "hyperpower" whose military, in 2001-2, seemed to bestride the world. Second, in Tolkien, the good guys sent Frodo with the Ring into the depths of Mordor as a sort of last-ditch, bet-everything gamble; then they sent an army to the gates of Mordor as a diversion — to keep the Eye occupied and distract it from the hobbits headed for Mount Doom.

David Weigel at Reason's Hit and Run further explains how Santorum's comments failed to reflect the geopolitical complexities of Middle Earth:

Was Santorum referring to the hobbits' final approach up Mount Doom, when Aragorn (George Bush) was convincing the men of Gondor (Tony Blair) and Rohan (John Howard) to make a final, diversionary push at the Black Gates? Or is he referring to the entire quest of Frodo and Sam (300 million Americans), which was aided at various points by mystical creatures - the Ents, the Dead Men of Dunharrow - that don't have any easy relations in the real war on terror?

And Rosenberg again:

It's hard, in truth, to find any useful Middle Earth analogy to the Iraq War: the parallels break down across the board. Still, you might think of Bush's invasion of Iraq as the equivalent of a beleaguered Gondor, attacked by the armies of Mordor across the River Anduin, sending its army off on an expedition to Far Harad, after its leaders issued proclamations that the White Council had incontrovertible evidence of the Haradrim's possession of Rings of Mass Destruction.

So wait, if Bush is Aragorn, does that mean Condi Rice is Arwen?

#1 More realistically in this scenario, the U.S. would be Mordor because we are certainly acting more along those lines these days.

#2 Santorum needs to not even think about LOTR. He needs to leave it alone. He doesn't deserve to even be allowed to read or watch it, let alone draw analogies between it and this unecessary and tragic catstrophe that he helped create in Iraq by supporting der Fuhrer as ardently as he's done. I live in PA and I will be having a huge party when he gets beaten next month. And maybe I'll make it an LOTR themed-event for posterity.....

If there is an analogy between Iraq and LOTR, then the USA is most certianly Mordor. Sauron sends his armies to Gondor, so that he won't have to face Gondorian attacks in Mordor. I'm sure the terrorists in 9/11 saw themselves as small heroic figures sneaking across the border to attack an incredibly powerful enemy.

There was a photoshop cartoon being sent around the net a few years ago, with Bush wearing the One Ring, and the caption "Frodo has failed..."

'Hordes' of Tolkien fans are also likely to swarm around blatant misspellings of 'Hobbit' and 'Middle-earth' as well as people who criticize before researching; Eye of Mordor is a perfectly acceptable term (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Eye_of_Mordor).

Ho, Ho, Ho! Well thousands of hippies, aging maybe, but still young at heart, who have been sickened by the hipocrisy of America and Britains atrocities in Iraq, will now be in total disgust by R.Santorum's epistle, maybe he needs to read The Lord of the Rings and get the gist of the story before likening Iraq and the US to Tolkiens work. Tolkien a true christian with a message, not like Bush, a possible antichrist as some would say, truth evades him!

Why I might wonder does it require a Tolkien buff to think about the Lord of Rings in connection with the US. Still to consider president George W. Bush in the same vain as Aragon strikes me as mistaken and even absurd. Bush covets power like no president since Richard Nixon, while Aragon refused the ring of power when it was presented to him—his motto is he must first learn to be true to himself. Bush is the one who has removed legal barriers erected between the various intelligence agencies to protect the constitutional rights of Americans and this consolidation of power has been done by means of the innocent sounding and somewhat secretive term “seamless”. (I guess “seamless” is a kind of pun) This has the effect of bringing the military and CIA into the domain of local and state law enforcement as well as federal and thus could make these concepts obsolete, it is a way of saying we no longer separate the military and CIA from state and local law enforcement and consequently anyone taken into custody by say the military or CIA do not fall under state and local ordinances but rather some other concept of detainment without the necessities of due process or even such reasoning as legal grounds for detainment other than its a matter of national security. They have supra-national powers. (In other words Bush is devious or if you prefer the Tolkien vocabulary, he's evil). In this sense Bush is more similar to a Soviet Premier than a leader in a liberal democracy. The Bush realm is darkness (secrecy), lies, dogmatic propaganda, war without any need for an act of aggression towards us—or if you prefer the NEW Speak and more sweet sounding “preemptive” warfare, which in fact is nothing more and nothing less than tyranny. Bush speaks of democracy when what he means is a totalitarian like society and liberal use of the military and secret police. Unilateralism means one minded decisions made by an all powerful president who decides whom to kill, whom to torture, whom to attack and so on. It is a sort of Caesar concept which will undermine and destroy not only the USA but the entire world system as we have known it. That does seem to have a one ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them sort of a twist to it. So George Bush has far more in common with Sauron than Aragon. The only similarity that I see between Aragon the character and Bush the president is that they both are males. I mean Aragon is presented as this rugged and hardened man, living in banishment while he attempts to win over the will of men to take their stand against the tyranny of Mordor. He doesn't glitter but he is gold in that he is true. Bush is a person who isn't banished (at least not yet) but rather he is a man who has had all doors opened to him not because he has earned his keeps but rather because the influence his family has. Thus his military service is built on exceptions, we are at war but he goes into the reserves to become a fighter pilot but then fails to take a test and gets grounded loosing his wings but he still manages to get an honorable discharge or his entrance to Yale or Harvard must be exceptions to the rule because he is either a C student as he claims or a liar about his grades. How many graduate students get into Harvard who were C students in their under graduate studies or who goes to Yale as a C student from high school? In fact his entire career seems to be give me this Daddy, give me that Daddy and with each give me he manages to destroy what he has been given or abuses the privilege in someway demanding a cover up and at present he is president because of an exception concerning the election laws in 2000 and with this latest give me he is in the process of destroying the lives of 25 million Iraqis, 25 million Afghanis as well as 300 million Americans while he weakens the entire structure of American security (our system of alliances and trading partners) because this system cannot be sure whether it can trust the true ambitions of the US. In other words the question of whether the United States is still the United States of America and not the Sauron of America has become a question the international community is taking seriously.

Um . . . attention liberals: you guys are so absorbed in your own hate, you don't even realize how ridiculous you all sound. The United States will never be the Stalinist paradise you all seek, so have some lembas and chill out, for God's sake.

Threats made to Tolkien relatives

AN IT technician has been charged with making threats of violence and extortion to relatives of Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien.

Christopher Carrie, 63 from Solihull and author of www.jtolkien.com, will stand trial later this year on four counts of threatening behaviour and one count of extortion. A further allegation of a breach of the peace has been dropped.

Mr Carrie successfully sued the Catholic Church in 2001 for abuse he allegedly suffered whilst within their care. Although the church did not admit liability, Mr Carrie was reportedly paid a five figure sum.

A spokesperson for the Tolkien family declined to comment.

>>10 Facts about Christopher Carrie

As the only other victim of 'Father' Tolkiens's sexual abuse who has gone public I can confidently say that there is not a shred of truth in the outrageous claims you make about Chris Carrie. Your ridiculous charges should help enlighten other readers as to the Tolkien attitude to the truth.

Sooner or later the story of the numerous victims of Tolkien's predations will reach the light of day. The investigating officers in Birmingham have indeed confirmed that in spite of the veiled terror hinted at by the Church and the Tolkien Legal apparatus victims numbering in "double digits" had come forward and are on record. Of course with the subsequent disgraceful resolution by the Crown Prosecutor Service in the UK it is doubtful whether any others will risk going public. For why should they leave themselves open to the wrath of the Tolkiens and their legal muscle, funded ironically by the profits from - childrens fantasy fiction!

Readers may find some balance against your attempts at disinformation at the Sunday Mercury, the only UK publication, and a small local one at that, that had the courage to go up against the Tolkien $$$m.

'Damages' paid in Tolkien caseJul 20 2003

The Sunday Times

This weekend, JRR Tolkien’s family should know the date they go into legal battle against New Line. The Warner Brothers-owned studio grossed $6 billion from The Lord of the Rings and yet, according to Hollywood’s voodoo accountants, still failed to make any profit to split with the Tolkiens.
To nonlegal eyes, the case favours the Tolkiens. But there is a wild card to be played – Christopher Carrie, who claims he was molested as a boy in a Birmingham church by Tolkien’s oldest son, Father John Tolkien, a scoutmaster, who denied it all before his death in 2003.
This week, Carrie is in LA after meeting John Schulman, top lawyer at New Line-Warner Bros, about turning his religious encounters into a movie. If this were a Hollywood fantasy movie, of course, the evil studio bosses would merely leak the prospect of a film in a newspaper diary, and the clan would slink away like Gollum. But they didn’t, and $160m is at stake. So expect it to get orcish, with some big, scary lawyers on the warpath.
