Republicans Want Republican Out in Orange County

California's well-heeled Orange County has a long history of hostility to immigrants, but a letter aimed at scaring Latinos away from the polls, sent out by the campaign staff of a Republican congressional candidate, was too much even for the local GOP. The chairman of the county's Republican Party is calling on Tan Nguyen to drop out of the race, and the US Department of Justice is even considering filing charges, the Orange County Register says this morning. The letter, which went out to about 14,000 Latino voters, warns (falsely, of course) that it's a crime punishable by jail or deportation for immigrants to vote.

a crime to vote, but apparently not to RUN, since Nguyen and, um, our governor are immigrants.

I saw Nguyen on the news this morning, claiming he had no advance knowledge of the staffer who apparently sent out these threatening mailings. "I'm not guilty," says he.

Sorry, Nguyen. I know you may be relatively new here and I can easily believe that cultural differences may be confusing the matter, but in this country we hold leaders responsible when their underlings screw up. This bozo worked for you and you are thus culpable.

If you can't control the behavior of your people during an election, what does that say about your ability to manage the office to which you wish to be elected?
