After Next Tuesday, Should Dems Be Feeling Impeach-y?

impeach_red.gif

With the Democrats poised to retake the House next week, it's only a matter of time before a freshly emboldened blue-state rep (besides John Conyers) dares to utter the i-word. Outside of D.C., there's been no such reticence to suggest that George W. Bush has committeed high crimes and misdemeanors. Which isn't to say that the idea of impeachment has any chance of going anywhere soon. Even if it does gain political traction, would forcing Bush into early retirement be worth the trouble? In our latest issue, Tim Dickinson wades into the slew of pro-impeachment books out there and considers these questions. I won't give away the ending, but he's not real excited by the (far-fetched) prospect of President Cheney or (gasp!) President Pelosi. Check it out.

I dislike the Prez and VP as much as anyone, but if the Dems pursue impeachment they will lose big in 2008. They should focus on good strategy and not revenge.

I can't see the Dems going after Bush, not with an impeachment effort anyway. The notion of a President Cheney would make most folks think twice.

However, according to some news reports I've heard, there are some in Congress who are making the case that #43 has violated Constitutional law on several occasions. I could understand it if they might want to pursue a penalty like an official censure to make the point that Presidents are not above the law.

I have always admired Pres. Gerald Ford for falling on his sword when he pardoned Nixon. He knew it would probably cost him re-election but he did it anyway because he also knew it would help the Nation heal more quickly.

Revenge is empty and pointless and rarely leads to justice. But to show forgiveness in the face of anger? That's *real* leadership and it's what has been conspicuously absent in the character of the men in the current administration.

So let Bush serve out the rest of his term. If it's proven that he's broken our most basic laws, let him face the American people and let us see if he has the spine to apologize for his transgressions against the people he was elected to serve. If he has broken no law, then let us have the wisdom to look ahead to the future and allow this troubled time to fade into history.

The Dems have already said they don't have the GUTS to do right by the Country! Just keep rewarding the evil ones! Why in hell do you think the Founders put Impeachment in the process? We need to bring these evil ones to JUSTICE, just like a similar case in Iraq! Oh, does it make it different if it's done in a huge country rather than a tiny one? Let's leave Religion in the Church, not in our government! That's why they put Separation of powers in there too, by the way!
