Grover Norquist: "Imagine There's No Dubya..."

norquist165.gif

At Grover Norquist's weekly conservative confab this Wednesday, the topic was how the GOP can get its groove back in the next two years. You gotta hand it to the K Street Project mastermind. Dude is cocky:

Despite short-term setbacks, Norquist said, the conservative movement is "perfectly healthy. No one is losing because they favor tax cuts, are pro-life, pro-gun or pro-growth.

"In two years, there is no George W. Bush and almost no Iraq war as presently constructed," Norquist said.

"And Democrats will be standing there, naked to the winds, having been forced by Nancy Pelosi to vote for tax increases, gun control and impeaching the president," he added, referring to the future speaker of the House.

Visions of disrobed Democrats aside, note how Norquist's smugness actually reveals his eagerness to get beyond Iraq and George W. Bush (echoing the neocons' new favorite theme). Yet somehow I suspect Republicans are going to have to confront those two issues in 2008 before they can get back to the business of being "real" conservatives. If only the Bush legacy could be drowned in the bath tub before then!

Yeah, the "conservatives'" $9 Trillion federal debt won't have anything to do with repealing tax cuts (I mean with tax increases).

He's cocky because the news media has completely covered up the fact that he has been accused of big-time fraud by the U.S. Senate.

Diane,

If I was you and the rest of the Democratic Party, I would savor these two years because in November 2008 you and the Democratic Party will surrender control of the United States Senate and the House back to the GOP. Why? The Three Strikes Rule applies: They are as follows:

Strike One:
1. Failure to Impeach G W Bush and Dick Cheney

Strike Two:
2. Failure to repeal the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act

Strike Three:
3. Failure to force Bush and Cheney to end this insane war in Iraq

Savor the victory for you will give those seats in the House and Senate back in two very short years...........

I'm not sure that Norquist is wrong.

How many Americans voted against the GOP NOW but put Bush in office a second time in 2004?

They'll flip-flop again, I'm afraid, when their short-term memory fails to keep them mindful of what the GOP really stands for.

For the record, Reed, I'm not a Democrat. I also don't think the American public gives a damn about the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act and impeachment. I doubt that most people could even tell you what the first two are about. They haven't cared so far, and I don't see that changing.

As for the war, that may be the only issue that strikes a chord, in my opinion.

I also agree with you that the new Congress is not likely to make the changes you described.

And why hasn't your pal Norquist been indicted for tax evasion, fraud, money laundering and general corruption for his part in the Ralph Reed/Abrahmoff scandal`?

I think the most telling thing about the election is that the voters weren't enthralled with the Democrats so much but they would rather have anyone, absolutely anyone, other than who was in power.

I don't think that is such a ringing endorsement of the Republican agenda or the Republican representatives.
