"This Just In..." A Fair and Balanced Daily Show

Via Think Progress comes a great tidbit reported by Forbes today. It looks like Jon Stewart has some future competition. Fox News and Joel Surnow, the executive producer of "24," are scheming to put together a news satire show for the right. Surnow thinks it's time for the left to have it handed to them, Fox News style. "The other side hasn't been skewered in a fair and balanced way," says Surnow. The working title for the show is "This Just In" and is set to air this winter, on Saturdays during primetime. The impetus for the show appears to be the change in power in Congress and Surnow wants to be ready: "By January, we will have a whole bunch of new people to do material about." Watch out Pelosi.

Um, then what is the O'Reilly Factor? You mean O'Reilly isn't an intentional parody?? (Maybe someone should tell Fox News that they are already a joke.)

Fox News and the Right don't need to do a "right" version of The Daily Show; they can say all they want with O'Reilly, Hannity and others. They don't have to hide their views behind comedy.

On the other hand, the only way to get "left" viewpoints, or even an open assessment of the "right" anywhere near a major media outlet is to dress it up as comedy on Comedy Central (see The Daily Show and the Colbert Report). Olberman is a step in the right direction.

FOX and the Ritewing already have a major corner of the media. They have Rush, Glen Beck, Michael Savage, Neil Bortz, Hannity and Colmes, OReilly. They have successfully skewered CNN, MSNBC, NBC and newspapers like Wash Post towards the ritewing (little ritewing quips by anouncers highlite their rite bias). WP and LA Times are now neocon havens. There is no absence of ritewing crap. Wed, Nov 8th, the day after the election, and CNN AND MSNBC had Tom Delay on for his commentary on the elections!

Ultimately, the type of humor from the rite- Rush Beck, etc - is unhealthy.

And Ritewing propaganda is noteably hazardous to one's heart and soul.
