Palestinians Form Human Shield, Israelis Back Off

Hundreds of Palestinians, many of them women and children, formed a human shield around a Gaza building targetted by the Israeli military - a novel tactic that got the Jewish state to call off their planned air strike. The Israelis, as they often do, had given advance notice to the militants whose homes they were aiming to blast with missiles so that their families could be evacuated. Instead, they sent out a call for supportive protesters, at the prompting of a female Hamas activist who had also led a group of women to form human shields to help a group of trapped gunmen escape an Israeli siege earlier this month.

Now, no one can deny that Israeli military actions have killed lots of innocent Palestinian civilians, and that's a terrible thing. But this whole episode does point out a difference between them and their suicide-bombing opponents. Israel doesn't intentionally target civilians; Hamas and other Palestinian groups do. In fact, the same day that the Israelis called off their missilie attack lest it harm innocent people, Palestinian missiles fired into the town of Sderot injured three people. Is there a difference between extreme disregard for the possibility of civilian casualties as a side effect of a military strike and deliberately killing civilians? Discuss.

I have always believed that if the Palestinians would follow the path of Gandhi they would make a whole lot more progress than with violence. This will expose Israeli policy for what it really is.

If Israel is so opposed to targetting innocent civilians, why are so many innocent civilians killed? And was the attack called off because of the human shield, or because of the presence of the international press?

I think the difference is that the Israelis now allow military objectors. Being well aware of PR, they let bomber pilots refuse to serve in the Lebanon war rather than discipline them publicly. Rather than lay blame over the human shield incident, we should point out progress. The old Israel would've made more martyrs.

Given that the Palestineans were voting to recognize Israel as a legitimate state at the time the bombing of Lebanon stopped it, it's clear that the evil parties here are the warhawks on both sides who would deliberately end peace motions. Likewise, we can see that peace needs a nudge that will never come from our administration.

Though Israel may not "deliberately" target civilians, they manage to kill many. For whatever reason, a defeated and miserable Palestinian refugee population continuously under siege does not recognize the superior humanity of their Israeli conquerors.

What else can Israel do?

Hey, Mo Jones, you need more fact checking. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Middle East events would know that it is simply factually false to claim that Isarael does not target civilians. Either assign someone qualified to write the copy, or do a better job of editing.

Your average Palestinian man in the street isn't the bogyman people believe him to be--it was only after each previous Palestinian administartion proved to be corrupt that the people finally voted in Hamas.
Recently the U.N. General Assembly expressed grave concern over the arrest of dissidents, use of torture and the persecution of journalists in Uzbekistan, but on Monday the human rights committee voted 74 to 69 in support of an Uzbek motion to take no action. Speaking on behalf of the 117 nation Nonaligned Movement of mainly developing nations, Cuba said that it opposed the targeting of specific countries over their HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD, arguing that singling out specific nations for critism of their human rights record is politically motivated and doesn't lead to change.
Obviously it's the corrupt men at the top who are the bogymen here.
Perhaps the best example of such a negative force is the US Congress. First it approved the sale of materials for Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction program, than it turned around and approved military action against Iraq--using such weapons as the excuse.
Nothing could possibly be more demonstrative of these politician's mettle than the fact that they've "allowed" the entire democratic process in the US to become "tainted" with valid criticisms of election fraud.
Jesus pointed out how the rich man is unlikely to become an advocate of the poor, and that's the underlying problem here--the powerful rich see a "wonderful" opportunity to exploit the poor on a grand scale.
