Death Sentences Dropping
Hurray for DNA! Thanks in large part to all those guys who keep getting exonerated from death row, the number of death sentences juries have handed down in execution-happy Texas has dropped by more than half in the last ten years, from 40 in 1996 to just 14 this year. That fits the pattern nationwide, where death sentences have fallen from about 300 per year in the 1990s to 125 in 2005. Even Texas' Harris County, which has sent more residents to Death Row than any other jurisdiction in America in recent decades, only sentenced three people to be executed this year.

This is a wonderful theory but the reality is far from it right now. Since the chapter 64 was voted in Texas regarding DNA testing in Texas, do you know how many death row prisoners have benefited from it? ONE, despite many cases that absolute fit the required criteria. This is another farce. Unless an independent commission rules on innocence rather than the sentencing courts, nothing will change. Harry County has "only" sentenced three people to death this year, but a third of death row prisoners come from Harris County and two third of those executed come from Harris County... Have you looked at the number of execution warrants already signed for 2007? Have a look!

And Texas, the home of the radical right, yup they are radical alright.
Yes Texas is the home of many criminals but the huge number of white collar criminals like Bush family friends at Enron, who stole the State of California blind never get prosecuted.

Though it is good that the death penalty is dropping...
We might remember the case of Kathryn Johnston, an 88-year old woman who was gunned down in her home during a no-knock raid that we now know came from faulty information (see CNN). Though she committed no crime, her penalty for attempting to defend herself from armed men breaking into her home was death.
