Arab Street Turns Against Uncle Sam

American political leaders are no longer the only ones earning a bad rap among the populace in the Middle East. Public opinion of the U.S. public, as well as American products, are hitting new lows. And this is in countries that are considered to be allies of the U.S.

The Arab American Institute painted this bleak picture today, releasing the latest results of an opinion poll that Zogby International has been conducting annually since 2002, which gauges public sentiment toward the U.S. in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco.

Speaking this morning at press conference in Washington, James Zogby, the president of the AAI, said that the souring of public opinion could hinder diplomatic efforts by the U.S. to address the situation in Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

According to Zogby, these findings reinforce the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group Report, which were released last week. Among other things, the report recommended direct diplomatic talks with countries in the region including Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria.

“What this says to me is if we want to salvage ourselves in Iraq, if we want to salvage the situation in Iraq, we have to salvage our credibility and legitimacy in the region,” Zogby said. “All these numbers do is tell me that the linkage issue is absolutely critical.”

While in previous polls the American people had been viewed favorably, only Lebanon had a positive view this year. The shift in sentiment was largest in Jordan and Egypt, where 76 percent and 72 percent of respondents, respectively, had worse opinions of the U.S. than one year ago.

"Only Lebanon had a positive view (of the US) this year"......Presumably the poll was taken before GWB and Condi allowed Israel to pulverise the country.

I'm a little tired of all the Arab countries hating on the USA for everything- thinking we're all a bunch of infidels- I'm tired of this argument. Don't get me wrong, I don't support Bush or his policies but I think there is a separation between the government and the people here. It's unfortunate many Arabs hate us anyway and think they are morally superior just because they are Muslims and we're just "infidels." Meanwhile, they beat the shit out their women and brutally kill fellow Arabs. It's too bad there are so many radical Muslims blowing each other up and then blaming the USA (Iraq, Palestine). It's hypocrital- I bet most of the Arabs polled say they hate American goods as they listen to there Ipod and wear Ralph Lauren- deep down inside they want to be like Americans. In a way I think they do hate us because we have more freedom. Sad but true.

Can I add link to this article on my site? In my opinion is very helpful article

This is easy to understand since Uncle Sam is the house NEGRO of Israel, the colonial power and slave master of the middle east. Uncle Sam does the bidding of its master. The L.A. times, and the Chicago paper and many others, including 15 TV stations just got bought out in a private deal by a Zionists. The N.Y. times is also owned by a Zionist, not to mention the film and TV industry. Is it any wonder?

"the souring of public opinion could hinder diplomatic efforts by the U.S. to address the situation in Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Iran’s nuclear ambitions."

“What this says to me is if we want to salvage ourselves in Iraq, if we want to salvage the situation in Iraq, we have to salvage our credibility and legitimacy in the region,”

I understand what he is trying to say here, but this is a seriously flawed argument and assessment: The rate of consumption is indicative of political beliefs. It's true that consumption can become politicized and become a political act (i.e. boycotts and whatnot) but when is consumerism along the same lines as diplomacy? Should consumption rates and diplomacy be the two means to reach any political ideal? People in the Mid East (and elsewhere) will buy American products. This does not necessarily mean that they agree with the US' actions.

And there is another point that people (like a few commentators above) miss. As a person who has traveled extensively, I've seen people buy American products. I will go as far as saying that none of them bought these products with a sense of "admiring" America or expressing solidarity with US foreign policy. Many of them want a specific product, and they buy what is available. More often than not, at supermarkets the majority of the products are from America or from American multinationals that have headquarters in said country. This means that there is really very little choice in people being able to choose whether to buy American products or not. This "flooding" phenomenon and establishing product supremacy in markets is not a reflection of the will/choice of your average everyday citizen, but a result of the trade agreements between their government snd the US. Take for example how many of the products we Americans buy are from China and elsewhere. How many of us have chosen economic policy? That is the product of US-China economic and trade agreements. And does that mean we agree with Chinese foreign policy when we buy Made in China products, especially when it is nearly impossible to find products that are NOT made abroad?

To point to consumerism and diplomacy as the only indicators to assess complex international conflicts is short sighted and superficial. What is needed is a serious evaluation and deeper understanding of the international situation and address that. This means not pointing to how people in the Arab world eat at McDonald's (which is an act conveying a status symbol for well to do people) or drink Coke (which a lot of people do). This means addressing the critisms people have about America's unwavering financial, military, and political support of Israel. This means in not putting together flawed, misleading "peace accords" that unflinchingly support and sustain Israeli power, control, hold over Palestinians. It means not invading and occupying countries to establish political-economic supremacy, a move which is frankly neo-imperialist. It means not toppling democratically elected governments (which do or don't agree with US "national interests") or punishing a people through sanctions and military actions because they have elected a government we don't like. It means not putting cold geo-political objectives over human beings, human rights, and the right to sovereignty of any people on this planet. It means not subjugating people into becoming slaves for the globalization regime, where for the first time ever we have record numbers of migrants, displaced people, poverty and an disparity between the few who are obscenely rich and the majority who do not even have their basic needs met.

These things cannot be evaluated or addressed through simply looking at "diplomacy" (which hardly reflects the will of the majority of the people, since so much of it is negotiation and compromise of the interests of the powerful) and seeing whether people are buying American products.

As long as America supports racist Israel, the world will hate us. Israel promotes NOT a vision of a inclusive "multi-cultural," "multi-ethnic" society (like we do in America) for Israel, but instead a racist exclusionary "Jewish state." It is racist because a Jew is defined as coming from a Jewish mother(genes). That state is openly dedicated to the advancement of the Jewish religion, culture, and even the genetic preservation of the Jewish people. It vigorously opposes intermarriage of Jews with non-Jews. Israel's Parliament has passed a law preventing Palestinians who marry Israelis from living in Israel. The move was denounced by international human rights organizations as racist, undemocratic and discriminatory. Israel uses racial profiling. Israel values Judaism above other religions. Israel should seek to be welcoming and inclusive and respect all religions, or even those with no religion. .
Israeli ethnocentric, chauvinism and xenophobic values are just too extreme. Israel does not share American values and let us therefore not share American taxpayer money with them. Israel needs to advance to the 21st century in its values. The days of racism should be a thing of the past. Israeli society is where America's society was 100 years ago. Israel can do better. Let us have that as our goal to advance Israel to the 21st century in the field of civil rights.

Someone else below asked this already.
I am getting nailed with Spam in my website for our blog website. Is there anyway to stop this? If not, there really isn’t any point in leaving it up and active. Any help will be greatly appreciated. http://www.torrentmania.info

Prof. Wadsworth?

I'm fascinated by how many times, in how many places on the net, and under how many different names that exact same:
["Israel promotes NOT a vision of a inclusive "multi-cultural," "multi-ethnic" society (like we do in America) for Israel, but instead a racist exclusionary "Jewish state...etc, etc, etc"] rant gets posted.

"Prof Wadsworth", "Noushin Coas", "Percy Wigglesworth II", "Rebecca F.", "Sharon", "Rachael F." and "Mikhail" have all posted that exact same string on MoJo, somebody signing as "John Fleischer" (also a MoJo poster) has posted it elsewhere around the net...
Speaking strictly for myself, I don't care how many screennames you post under, or how many different genders you pose as, but reading the exact same block of text over, and over, and over... Sheesh!
EDIT the boilerplate, will ya?
Make it read like something fresh, or at least something MARGINALLY Different!?!?!

I think what the Prof is saying is if Israel would be blessed with multi-culturalism and diversity like we have in America, then they would be loved by their neighbors. They would be a "shining light on the hill" as Ronald Reagan would say. Just look at all the many benefits that multi-culturalism and diversity has brought to America. Unfortunately, Israel let in a large amount of Russians(from a mafia society, the old USSR) who said they were Jews when they were not(e.g. some mafia types) and the society and government has changed over the last 20 years. If you would ever visit the place, you would know how the Russians have changed the country. America has also changed over the last 20 years as well.

Thanks ,very interesting

The U.S. King-Crane (1919)report stated: 90% of Palestine's inhabitants were non Jewish & did NOT want a Jewish state in Palestine.
Israeli Arab group Adalah recently proposes a new 'multi-cultural' constitution.
Arab Knesset members will be able to bring about the disqualification of bills that impinge on the rights of Arabs, and classifies the State of Israel as a "bilingual and multicultural" country rather than a Jewish state. Consider that he or she may honestly be offended by “their flag” having a Jewish star in it. Wouldn’t most American Jews (among others) be troubled if the U.S. flag had a Christian cross on it? Consider that he or she may honestly be offended by “their national anthem” referring to the land, as the land of the Jews. Consider that he or she may honestly feel discriminated against because, legal equality aside, he or she IS discriminated against. Israeli-Arabs will want full equality in Israel. Any minority citizen of any State wants no less. It sounds fair. Why do so many Israelis, Jews, and supporters of Israel look for a dark hiding place when confronted with the truth of discrimination? I think it is because Jews understand what it is to be discriminated against, and have a deep desire that discrimination against all people throughout the planet be eliminated. Discrimination against Arab-Israelis isn’t fair. As supporters of Israel, it is necessary to accept and admit, without nuance, that some discrimination against Arab-Israelis is 100% true. Let us not be racists and stop discrimination at home(Israel). Support the “multi-cultural constitution.

I think the solution resides with us. We must first demonstrate that we are honorable and diplomatic once again - not that we are now - via basic citizen diplomacy methods. Once we do that, then perhaps our image will begin to change in the world.

Thanks For the Interesent Articles.
