Military Contractors Lose Their "Get Out of Jail" Card

Five years into the war on terror, American military contractors have finally lost some of their immunity from prosecution for dirty deeds done on the federal dime. In a post over on DefenseTech, the Brookings Institution's Peter Singer reports on a quiet insertion into the 2007 Pentagon budget that means "contractors' 'get out of jail free' card may have been torn to shreds." Basically, contractors are now subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which means they can be court martialed:

This means that if contractors violate the rules of engagement in a warzone or commit crimes during a contingency operation like Iraq, they can now be court-martialed (as in, Corporate Warriors, meet A Few Good Men). On face value, this appears to be a step forward for realistic accountability. Military contractor conduct can now be checked by the military investigation and court system, which unlike civilian courts, is actually ready and able both to understand the peculiarities of life and work in a warzone and kick into action when things go wrong.

The scope of new law is not entirely clear; it may include embedded journalists, too. (Not that they go around playing soldier—Judy Miller aside.) But overall, says Singer, this move brings a bit of much-needed oversight to a largely unregulated industry. "Last month," he writes , "DOJ reported to Congress that it has sat on over 20 investigations of suspected contractor crimes without action in the last year." Sounds like a good place to begin.

Would this long-overdue oversight and accountability address crimes already committed before, during and after the run up to this abominable, despicable and illegal incursion into the Middle East via Iraq and all the 100k shrink-wrapped blocks of USA tax payer$ sliding across the table to unknown contractors (see footage on PBS P.O.V. documentary 'My Country, My Country'...unbelieveable!...
AND! PBS Frontline's 'Private Warriors'...also un-f-ing-believeable!). What about those private contractors who participated in the Abu Grahib torture before a brave American Soldier leaked the photos in early 2004? A few bad apples (how rumsferatu put it)? i don't think so! Everyone be on Cyanide Watch! These despots occupying the executive branch are cowards of the worst kind and would not hesitate to off themselves than to stand before The World Court to answer for their crimes against the Earth, Humanity and all Life on the surface of this Water Planet. So much healing to implement and time is running short. We're already past the eleventh hour! Independents, Greens and Dems had better shift into High gear and stay there! The repugs do not deserve to be part of any political process after blindly riding this bush/dick pony show into the crapper and showing their true colors (yellow, and not red; & no spine!)

Unlike many right-wingers my family IS sacrificing for this illegal war. I have two little brothers, Matt and Steven, who are both in the Marine Corps. Matt is an officer and currently not "in country," but Steve is stationed in Iraq. Now that Democrats have some control over this Imperial President it has been said that, aside from Impeachment (which a majority of Americans DO support), the only way to put an end to the disaster Bush has created is to "defund" the war. Obviously by doing so the Democrats put themselves in a position where Rove and the Right can say they are not supporting our troops. I have a better idea... Defund the war profiteers! Why not, as has been done in the past, put a "war profit" tax on companies like Halliburton, KBR, Carlyle, Crescent, Wackenhut, Blackwater, etc, etc? Tax their profits and use the tax revenues for Veteran's benefits and healthcare. I was particularly angry to hear from my brother Steven that a Sergeant who works with him finished his tour and rather than reenlist signed up with a private contractor and is back working right next to Steve making $100,000 more than he did doing the same exact job in the Marines. Why should that anger America? Because no matter how you look at it, it is still our tax dollars paying their salaries. Benefits, salaries, and equipment expenses are being cut for the "troops" while private companies, (companies with no-bid contracts and direct ties to the current administration), have bottomless budgets. How can that be? The best way to "defund" this horrible war is to take the profit out of the military industrial complex. It is the "peoples" money that is being spent no matter how the money is routed. The people, no matter how they feel about this war, DO want to support our troops, NOT private companies that are making record profits off the death and destruction of our soldiers. Considering how much control corporations have over our government, if and when such a tax was put on their profits in a "time of war and sacrifice", what do you bet this "time of war" would silently end when their profits dry up? Corporations are all for the "sacrifice" of human life if it means they will profit. If they have to "sacrifice" profit the human sacrifices might come to an end.

Not only should a war-profits tax be initiated but a freeze on ALL profits garnered from this hellish crime. Saddam Hussein said it best before his convenient execution..."The hell that is Iraq" after being told to (by a bystander) to 'go to hell.'We haven't EVEN begun to see the tip of the iceberg as far as accountability and JUSTICE is concerned. Speaking as an 'Independent,' are you bush/dick/repug supporters happy with how your tax dollars have been spent? I personally don't care what party you're from (or planet for that matter!); is this the kind of World yo9u are envisioning for yourselves and are planning to leave for your children and their children? War and discord? Rampant poverty and stunted technological advances? There truly is a better way! I'm not saying the Dems have all the answers but it's a start! Some of our people are not thinking or seeing very clearly right now and have to do some serious soul-searching in order to receive a life-changing epiphany you've been waiting for all your life! I can tell you right now that this bush/dick pony show is the straw that broke the camels' back and has only accelerated timing of their inescapable doom. The one good thing that has come out of the six years of mental/emotional torture (ala the inferior court handing the presidency over to fugwb/& dick) is the 'raising of awareness' across the country and the entire planet as far as 'what is working' versus 'what is not working' if we're to truly create a world where lasting peace reigns and all war/discord is but the faintest of memories, if that! The last horror movie ever made is about to reach it's climatic ending! We all have to see this through, however uncomfortable it looks on the surface. It's just awful the amount of blood that has already spilled, all the treasure wasted! and for what? Divine Justice and Planetary Healing is at hand! Expect it!

Peace & Inner Strength
Through Unity!
