Mitt Romney Could Actually be Good for America (He is So Screwed)

On the subject of moderate Republicans that we've been discussing today, video has surfaced of Mitt Romney in a 1994 Massachusetts senatorial debate. It's unclear if it was posted by a trouble-making YouTuber or an operative from McCain's camp (or Giuliani's camp, or, uh, Duncan Hunter's camp, or whatever), but it is clear that it's intended to hurt Romney. Why? Because he really seems like a good bloke, the sort of guy who is socially tolerant and accepting. Bad news, bro.

In the video, which you can watch below, Romney says very clearly that abortion should be "safe and legal in this country" and that a main tenet of his family's belief system is not imposing their beliefs on other people. A reporter says that Romney has made a campaign promise to "do more to promote gay rights than Senator Kennedy" and Romney doesn't object. There is also a long portion of the video where Romney talks about how American companies "have to draw on the skills of women and minorities" and how he has worked at length to end the existence of the glass ceiling. I mention that only because it amazes me that someone would think that stance is damaging enough to be worth including. Is some member of the Republican base going to see this video and say, "Whoa, Romney thinks women should be equal to men in the workplace? He's lost my vote!"

Also, Romney apparently lives (or lived) by a personal credo that forces (forced) him to spend one day a week volunteering his time on behalf of those less fortunate than him. It's really too bad this guy is going to lose in the primary....

Watch the video for yourself.

Update: For more on Romney's scandalous past as a non-bigot, see our post titled Gay-Lovin' Skeletons in Romney's Closet.

Mormons are any but live and let live, and if you have ever lived in Utah or a Mormon community you would painfully realize this. They unrelently impose their church dogma on everyone, through legislative agendas funded by public money. They are rigid. religious bigots who speak one way and do another. Their aid to the less fortunate is a scam to proselytize and os generally predicated on your acceptance. Furthermore, they are mutally exclusive in their all they do, and still claim that thier "prophet" was murdered by the world of non-members.

I won't even begin to tackle Mike's biggoted comments.

I'm sure the millions of dollars we gave to Tsunami effort were just a farce to get more converts. Please be serious in your comments.

What do you mean by "too bad this guy is going to lose in the primary"? I think that Romney has the best chance of any candidate to date. Though a Brownback, Thompson, or Huckabee could come in late in the game and claim the prize, I don't see it happening because none of them are very generally electable.

In January of 2009 the American people will be witnessing the inaugural address of President Elect Willard Mitt Romney, and it will be a landslide victory.

I doubt this video was posted by a Republican opponent of Romney's. I looked at the person who posted it and he seems interested in Webb (pro or con, I have no idea). But I can say that the people who are leaving comments on the video are right-wing idiots who are falling for the "Romney is for abortion, affirmative action and the gay agenda, so I hate him now" thing. Conservatives really don't get it do they? Oh, and as a former Mormon (now atheist) I have to say that "Michael" is pretty on the nose with his characterization of Mormons.

Its funny that on MLK-eve Michael and Regis advocate judging people by their religion. I'm not sure, but shouldn't we have figured out by now that that is a bad idea?

As I browse the blog entries and news stories resulting from a Google search, I'm amazed at how many people are willing to leap to conclusions and definitively declare that a certain candidate has no chance of being a contender for the 2008 presidential elections. I may like Romney, but I disagree with the notion of discarding the potential of any candidate for any reason. The election is still a year away, for cryin' out loud... anything can happen.

It reminds me of how so many people were willing to give the bowl trophy to Ohio State long before the game, which they ended up losing 41-14. Hey, at least the sports analysts that didn't give Florida a chance get paid to be wrong... we do it free of charge.

Take-home message: You're always right, even when you're not, and don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Reality just gets in the way of your opinions.

Ah, the evolved American way...

Mormons are progressive and tolerant, and the KKK si just trying to defend Western Civilization. Ask Rosanne Barr, a jew who grew up in Utah, who ended up with multiple personality disorder. Read "A Study in Scarlett" by Arthur Conan Doyle to see what the always thorough research of Sherlock Holmes discovered about Mormons.

Sorry, but I am with Sam Harris on this one. Religion gets too much of a pass in American society when religions are bigoted or irrational.

Does tolerance disarm religious liberals?

I'll wait and see as regards all of them. But the main trouble with Romney is that he is a republican and given what they have done to america and the world I'm not likely to take a chance. Romney Sr and Mo Udall were Mormons and did fine but things ahev changed now due to the rethug party and religion must be taken into account now. I don't think America can survive another repub. I would most definitely NOT vote for a Catholic, thoug it is my religion I no longer trust the Catholic Church's agenda for America. It may be good for the popes, previous and present but it is destroying, splitting, dividing and fracturing Ameria and I will oppose that with every ounce of energy and time left to me. Religions are destroying America because they are aligned with the Republicans. NO religion should ever be aligned with any political party only issues.
Jesus Christ and our cherished Constitution forbid the merging of church and state. Any religion that sells it's religion for political power is no longer a religion. Given what has happened in America since Pope John Paul II aligned himself and the entire Catholic Church with the rethug party of bullies and thugs before Reagan became prez have given our beloved country the likes of Reagan, Bush41 and now baby Bush43. And the Catholic Church is still staunchy aligned with the Pro-Death Republican Party. Death to our troops, death to Iraqis and Afghanis, death to families, death to education and endless corporate welfare and church welfare via the Bush/Rethug Office of Faith Based Initiatives which feeds taxpayer dollars to certain religions thus BUYING those religions. Let us all throw the politicians, buyers and sellars and religions out of the temple.

Bob, does this mean that you are a fan of the Dems favored position of welfare-at-gunpoint? How about John Edward's idea of spending billions of taxpayer dollars to fund education in OTHER countries.

There are decent candidates out there. While I'm a supporter of Ron Paul, if you think Dems are a godsend, check out some candidates that aren't named Clinton, Obama, or Edwards, or check out third party candidates.

The main thing limiting our choices is--us.

Its about time people woke up and realized that religion is nothing but a business and a con game to control people. And look at all the hate and wars that religion has caused. All anybody has to say is that my GOD can beat your GOD up and watch all the insane killing it will start. And do these clowns care about all the innocent people that will die because of there stupidity.!NO!

Michael - you are right about Mitt not winning and about not using religion as a basis for running for President or any other political office.
However, you couldn't be further from the truth about Mormons (members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints). I don't blame you for your suspicions, but they are not facts. There are something like 13 Million Mormons and to say that because one is a bigot, they are all bigots, makes you look rather small-minded.
I have a hunch I've known more Mormons, personally, than you'll ever even come close to meeting, let alone knowing, and EVERY MORMON I've met and known, that is devout, is not only Christian, but literally among the "salt of the earth," with no hidden agenda(s).
Next time, try meeting & getting to know a Mormon (or ten) and "walking a mile in their shoes," before you stereotype about that, or that all churches are just businesses that want to control people :(

BTW, do you even believe in God? God gave us our free agency. He doesn't want to control us. It is the attitudes and mistakes of men that have caused hate and wars....NOT God or religion(s).
