Army Lowers Recruiting Standards (Again)

From today's New York Times:
The number of waivers granted to Army recruits with criminal backgrounds has grown about 65 percent in the last three years, increasing to 8,129 in 2006 from 4,918 in 2003, Department of Defense records show.
It's actually a bigger story about the Army's change of standards regarding education, fitness, and criminal history (although not, of course, sexual orientation). For a helpful overview, check out Liz Gettelman's piece in the current issue of the magazine.

I was in the ANG and Active duty between 1978 and 1982. The army then was filled with Vietnam vets with PTSD; men who slept with a loaded gun under the pillow or who would have flashbacks in the middle of a meeting or exercise and start calling in air support for the firefight that was happening in their minds, alcoholics/addicts, foreign nationals, and young criminals who were shunted into the Army rather than jail. That Army was still a wreck even 5-10 years after the Vietnam conflict had ended. We couldn't even pull off one desert rescue op (think Iranian hostages). Todays Army is fast approaching this same condition or perhaps worse. Even if the bloody handed tyrant in the white house ordered the Army and Marines to stand down and evacuate Iraq/Afganistan tomorow it would take a decade to repair the damage to our forces. The damage to our individual soldiers and marines will probably never be healed for a large percentage (at least 40%).

Movable Type 3.33
This is not a surprise at all; I've known a number of recruiters who have basically been commended to get everyone they possibly can through any and all screening processes. There are recruitment offices that will drug test people once a week until they pass. There are offices that walk people through background checks, and change what they write in to make them passable. Also, they are letting people into job types that they are not qualified for as per their ASVAB tests, which are supposed to determine eligibility for those jobs.
