Bill Richardson Serious About This "Running for President" Thing

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has an op-ed in today's WaPo arguing that George Bush's refusal to use diplomacy early in his administration led to a nuclear North Korea, and that if we aren't careful we'll repeat our mistakes with Iran. Hard to argue with logic like this:

Rather than directly engaging the Iranians about their nuclear program, President Bush refuses to talk, except to make threats. He has moved ships to the Persian Gulf region and claims, with scant evidence, that Iran is helping Iraqi insurgents kill Americans. This is not a strategy for peace. It is a strategy for war -- a war that Congress has not authorized. Most of our allies, and most Americans, don't believe this president, who has repeatedly cried wolf.
...
No nation has ever been forced to renounce nuclear weapons, but many have chosen to do so. The Iranians will not end their nuclear program because we threaten them and call them names. They will renounce nukes because we convince them that they will be safer and more prosperous if they do that than if they don't. This feat will take more than threats and insults. It will take skillful American diplomatic leadership.

As I wrote a couple days ago, I totally agree. The funny thing about this is that it isn't just Democratic boilerplate from a presidential candidate. Bill Richardson knows diplomacy. Bill Richardson knows nukes. The man was U.S. ambassador to the U.N., negotiated with Saddam Hussein way back when, negotiated a ceasefire in Darfur more recently, and briefly ran the U.S. Department of Energy under Clinton. (All of this leads me to believe that Richardson, who is unlikely to get the nomination for president, would make an excellent Secretary of State.)

Comments

I don't know why people are so skeptical about Richardson being able to not only win the nomination but the presidency as well. Unlike Hillary, Obama and all of the rest, he actually matches the profile of selected presidential candidates over the past few decades, and indeed throughout American history.

For one thing, he's a governor, not a senator. And the American people have shown repeatedly over the years that they prefer their presidents to have experience as governors, not as senators. Senators always run, but they nearly always lose, only Harding and Kennedy winning in over 200 years. Look at recent history. Carter, Reagan, Clinton and George W. are all quite different, to say the least, but they were all ex-governors who had never held any positions in the federal government. There have been 10 times as many ex-governors elected Prez as senators.

Second, he's from the west, which is where all of the power and money is today. 10 out of the last 11 elections (going back to LBJ in 1964) have been won by someone from west of the Mississippi, and a whopping 8 of those 11 by someone from either Texas or California. The people in the NY-DC beltway will never acknowledge this, but that's the way it is.

The national media sees only what's happening in Washington DC, and only the people who live in DC, but the rest of the country couldn't care less about them. I wouldn't pay much attention to the analyses from the NY-DC beltway at this point, they've really lost touch with what's happening in this country.

Richardson is looking quite good to me. I like what he's saying, and I like his combination of experience. And, as someone from California, which has 10% of the people in the country, and 20% of the electoral votes needed to get elected President, I love the fact that he's from the west.

Mike,

There are rumors out there that Richardson has a LOT of skeletons in his closet, both personal and professional. The New Mexico media has done a little bit of work here, but the national media hasn't so much. I think they are thinking either they look into this guy and end up ripping him to shreds, or they just ignore his candidacy. Right now, they're choosing the latter. If Richardson runs an effective campaign and becomes a hot media story, people in the national media will start to take him more seriously. Sadly, I think that might end poorly for Richardson.

So what is the bad stuff about Richardson, besides the blatherings on some nutjob site? It's too early for me to endorse Richardson because I don't know enough yet, but I know enough not to believe vague allegations. I do know Richardson has as deep a resume as any declared candidate. As I go through my own candidate sorting process, I'm most wanting to know if Richardson opposed invading Iraq, or if he supported it and acknowledged his mistake, or if he's still in denial he was mistaken.

You wrote a thoughtful piece, but left a bad taste with the rumormongering in the comment section. What 'skeletons' could be worse than the ones Bush has yet to answer for in his own life and history? If he has personal issues, they can be easily addressed with candor and a determined focus on his agenda for America. If the whispering is about some political dealmaking, or some political favoritism, he's going to have to answer for it in some fashion. It's more likely that the media is ignoring him out of convenience more than some reticence on their part to scandalize his candidacy.

Whoa, way to pat a guy on the back right before casually torpedoing him. I'm with fullwood here:

"You wrote a thoughtful piece, but left a bad taste with the rumormongering in the comment section."

If you think Richardson's the best candidate -- as it would appear from this piece -- why not support him? His chances aren't as small as you seem to think. It was a nice post, Jonathan, and I hope you believe what you write here:

"Bill Richardson knows diplomacy. Bill Richardson knows nukes. The man was U.S. ambassador to the U.N., negotiated with Saddam Hussein way back when, negotiated a ceasefire in Darfur more recently, and briefly ran the U.S. Department of Energy under Clinton."

...because that's the kind of stuff that should count. And the way it counts is when smart folks with the ears and eyes of others make it count. Get in there, Jon. You can do it.

I have a story for you. Bill Richardson is being sued
Strange no one wants to run this story of course it has to be told.

Greetins from New Mexico, beautiful land of entrapment. Understand this folks Bill Richardson IS a socialist. NM has become a nanny state. Corruption is rampant. the much touted ed, system is near third world, teacher pay among the lowest 50% drop out rate.On immigration he is soft. He favors the North American Union. He has cowtowed to the nature nazis and allowed the reintroduction of the mexican wolf (though 75%) of new mexicians oppose) His policys are killing rural communites. I know, I are a rural bumkin. Go to rangemagazine.com and read TAKING LIBERTY & AMERICAN FORESTS THE GREAT LIE Bill Richardson would have us under UN rule given his druthers.

Richardson has more national and international experience than all the other candidates combined. He accomplished everything that Mr. Stein cited and then some: he raised the minimum rate in New Mexico to a living wage, one of the poorest states to do so. He also finally put into law drunk driving measures that were sorely needed: New Mexico was often near the top of the list for drunk driving deaths per capita.

I wouldn't count him out as a very viable VP candidate either. He oozes charisma and he has the ability to speak directly to the issues and to the people. The GOP has something on everyone. Like the very brilliant organization that they are, they'll wait until the front runner shows him or herself and then they'll let the battles begin. What are the Dems doing? Are they digging into the pasts of Guiliani, a hot-headed bigot, who's gone on- and off-record with rascist comments? I hope they're building dossiers on all of them. McCain's an easy mark because he's flip flopping all over the place. However, this is a party that has kept in power the worst president in history, who has made sure he hasn't been impeached (and has committed so many impeachable crimes it boggles the mind).

In other words, it's time for the Dems to start acting like the GOP. Get smart. Get organized. And come out fighting. Last election, I volunteered many hours to "get out the vote." What I found was an insanely disorganized, sophomoric group of people who couldn't figure out how to organize anything. I made calls to people who had received 10 calls already (and they threatened not to vote because at this point they were being harrassed). The Dems need to start organizing now. The Mickey Mouse stuff, although well-intended, has got to stop. We need organizers to organize.

1. The foster care system (CYFD) in New Mexico is running rampant & Richardson has chosen not to be involved in the running of this agency. He hired a woman who repeatedly admits her agency is poorly run and needs to hire people from the outside to straighten it out. However, this agency is self governed. A person calls in a complaint against a worker of this agency & no one will take a complaint against the worker, stating only that these people are doing their best. If this agency takes a child into custody, they do not have to share the "evidence" with the parent & the parent has no right to prove their innocence. Only the agency & attorneys have access to the "evidence" & the parent will never see it unless their attorney chooses to share it, which more often than not, they don't. The parent is guilty until proven guilty. The only thing anyone does here is threatens & coerces the parents & children & tell them they are guilty & they must abide by CYFD's requirements, then they will get their children back. The parents, although they may be innocent, have no recourse to prove their innocence; only to abide by the decisions of CYFD. The judges, attorneys, psychiatrists are all pawns of CYFD. In private, they admit this agency is out of control and have no system of checks and balances, but in public blindly follow the lead of CYFD. A child with medical needs are not properly cared for and CYFD claims that they are not responsible, nor are the foster parents responsible to make sure the medical plan of the child is followed to ensure the child's safety. My child was taken because CYFD falsely claimed medical negligence due to a report by a school nurse who had given medication at a time when the child could have died because the medication was not needed at this time. The nurse also was hired in due to lying on her application that she was an expert in the area of my child's needs; only later to agree to resign in lieu of being fired for falsifying her application. She called in a false report and CYFD took custody. They failed to conduct a proper and thorough investigation. They took any negative statement from anyone as fact, even if that person told them they didn't witness the event, only heard about it. Neither my child nor I were interviewed to deny or disprove any of the statements. Even when I produced a list of eyewitnesses to any incidents to disprove the accusations, CYFD said they didn't care to follow up on the claims. They knew what they wanted to know. A CYFD employee verbally falsified a medical report to claim that the child was in immediate danger. Yet, when asked to physically produce the document, she couldn't. The child's medical condition was acceptable prior to being taken, but was into dangerous levels when returned home. CYFD employees took the child into offices after many of the visitations threatening the child to admit that the medical condition was not properly cared for. Every time the child denied this, one CYFD employee became loud & verbally abusive, saying that if the child did not admit this, the child was never going home. This same employee, a middle aged man, took the child into his office alone, unsupervised and with the door closed, then proceeded to continue these threats; all the time knowing the child was uncomfortable being alone with a man that was a stranger.
Upon calling Richardson's office, I was told by his assistant that the Governor chose not to become involved in anything legal or political. The assistant also in a roundabout way admitted that the governor was more concerned with a run at the presidency instead of handling the current job to which he had just been elected. He had more pressing issues than the safety of my child.

Mr. Ysais,

I read your 'blog'Might I ask what your role is in your Suit Ysais VS Everyone and their mom in NM? Sounds like a mouse fighting a gorilla to me. If you have that many State entities you might actually be guilty of something huh?

Chris, have you read your entry? No wonder no one will run that story, you seem pretty delusional.

You need to read the record it is all public information.
Are you that delusional to think a government is not corrupt the big difference is the record tells the truth. And they are so afraid that they are paying the best law firms in New Mexico to kept this case under wraps. They have spent so much money they are really taking this case serious. No one wants the truth to come out because they will all be out of jobs and might spend some time in jail.
Read the public record and find out for yourself.
