Bob Kuttner Has Tasted the Obama Kool-Aid, and it is Sweet
Kuttner is co-editor of the American Prospect, and we know who he's supporting in 2008.
I have followed politics far too long to fall in love, but I have to say that Barack Obama is like nothing we have seen since Bobby Kennedy and maybe since FDR. If you haven't read his first book, Dreams From My Father, you owe it to yourself.
Obama wrote the book when he was 33, having spent nearly three years as an organizer on Chicago's South Side, and then three years at Harvard Law School where he was elected president of the Law Review. From there he went to Kenya, to come to terms with the African side of his family.
Reading this work, you think: no 33-year-old has the right to such uncommon wisdom and humanity. The comparisons that come to mind are the young Martin Luther King, or Vaclav Havel, or maybe Jefferson.
I think a lot of hard-boiled politicos are softies at heart, just waiting to be inspired. The Obamania 2008 National Tour continues!

Obama is about change. Shake things up!
No more Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton.

What does the "Obama Kool-Aid" taste like exactly? Optimism? Victory? Oh, wait, I forgot he only holds a lot views I like, not every single one, so he's inadequate to be president. Think I'll support Kucinich again, that way no matter who wins, my guy loses and I can still be smug to everyone else.

Mr. C, that seems to be part of the problem now. We continue to get the run of the mill politicians in office and things stay the same. I guess of you are happy with the status quo... But I personally would like to see someone fresh and not already so jaded (hopefully) by time in Washington.

The hope that Obama is force to shake up the status quo is sadly mistaken as is demonstrated by his willingness to consider missile attacks on Iran:

He embodies the status quo, he was just lucky enough to enter politics after it was clear that public opinion was against the Iraq debacle.

To Obama's supporters,
I was among the one or two people who found Obama's
highly acclaimed coming out speech at the 2004 DNC to be a very articulate sell-out of most of the core progressive principles I care about. I don't see anything particularly special about his background, personality, experience, or proposals to warrant the very unappealing circus atmosphere surrounding his Presidential campaign either. Nothing in these posts here changes my mind about him. You got a LOT more selling to do before you'll win my vote.

Obama does show some inteligent views but as my many mentors told me over fifty years ago: pay atention to life and use those life experiences for your greatest wisdom and knowledge. Look at your believes today and watch how they change as you grow more in wisdom and knowledge.
Obama is running for the highest responsibility in this country, he has not paid his dues yet. He needs more time.
