Not ALL Men, Chris

Speaking on MSNBC's Imus In the Morning show today, Chris Matthews said: "You only hear criticism of Hillary Rodham Clinton from smart, college-educated women. They're the ones that always have a problem with her." Matthews then explained that men "are afraid to talk like that."

Bad grammar aside, Matthews' statement is almost funny when you consider that he, a man, has practically made a second career of criticizing Clinton--not for her policies or her votes in the Senate, but for her gender. In December of 2004, Matthews said on Hardball that a Clinton candidacy would "motivate all the men in the country to vote against her." In November of 2006, he wondered "What is she going to do about her husband? She makes an acceptance speech, and there he is, just standing behind her, smiling and applauding."

And the very next month, Matthews wondered whether Sen. Clinton was "convincing" as a mom.

In his interview with Imus, Matthews made a big deal over his speculation that Clinton "puts up" with her husband's lifestyle so that he will raise money for her. In other words, Sen. Clinton is a whore who will do anything to get elected, another version of the "Oh, my--Hillary is ambitious" song and dance we've heard from everyone from Matthews to Maureen Dowd.

Yes, Sen. Clinton is ambitious, as is Barack Obama, who had barely set foot in the Senate when he decided he should be president of the United States. Or Rudy Giuliani, who gives speeches against backdrops of the tragedy of September 11. Or Mitt Romney, who suddenly repudiated several values he had publicly held for years. Lucky them--no one is criticizing them for their ambition.

Comments

Chris has a problem with anyone who doesn't rise to his standard of "pretty." He's often commenting on people's appearances. Nice looking couple, etc. There really is something wrong with that guy!

I would argue that Barack Obama is frequently criticized for his ambition. While he gets more than his share of positive press, when he does get negative press it's usually along the lines of "Does he have enough experience? Does he have the necessary substance?" That's a way of saying he's too ambitious for his age/experience, aka too big for his britches.

Posted by: Jonathan Stein on 03/28/07 at 8:24 PM  Respond

You're right Jonathan, but criticism of Obama's ambition is never called "ambition" (in that really snitty way the word is used when referring to a woman) and it is backed up by rather obvious facts. With Clinton, though, there is always a tone of "how dare she be ambitious!"

Well, at least Chris Matthews tends to be more of a straight shooter than a lot of the other pundits out there. I don't think he is a bad guy- just another talking head giving his spin on the situation. A lot of other people have said far worse things about the Democratic field. Matthews seems like a non-issue but MoJo blog contributors must keep with tradition in posting lame, non-issue stories.

Perhaps you have not watched Matthews very much for the last few years, FAF. He has been, until very recently, an embarrassingly cheerleader-like supporter of George W. Bush, and much of his enthusiasm has been based on Bush's "swagger" and "manliness." He has repeatedly made outrageous sexist remarks about not only Clinton, but about Pelosi and other women, constantly implying--or coming right out and saying--that women in public life cannot command respect. He is probably the most overtly sexist commentator on television, he is the all-time ass-kisser of the powerful, and if his inane babble is "straight shooting," I would hate to see someone who misfires.

You only hear criticism of Hillary from smart, college-age women. Chris Matthews criticizes Hillary. Ergo, by simple logic, Chris Matthews is a smart, college-age woman.

Posted by: Cameron on 03/29/07 at 11:59 AM  Respond

I'll have to agree with Cameron. You have to love the way the blog contributor here attempts to put spin on this non-story- it's junk and hardly journalism.

Diane E. Dees- your blog is boring and so are many of the non-stories you have contributed. I don't like Bush but he will not be impeached- that is a naive liberal's wet dream. It just won't happen- if it was, it would have already happened.

I don't watch much Hardball- I prefer more serious programs like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Southpark. Still Matthews is not some woman hater as the blog contributor suggests. Perhaps Diane loathes this quality in Matthews because she is the same. It's funny how that works.

Posted by: Freedumb Ain't Free on 03/29/07 at 1:45 PM  Respond

FAF, I can only assume you are a man because I don't think a woman would angle her argument quite so lamely. But perhaps while Diane steps out to double check whether or not her daddy is at the root of her observations, you might examine your somewhat homo-erotic loyalty to Matthews. You're acting like someone has attacked a loved one. I suspect it's your unresolved homosexual issues that are causing you to see that glowing, rosy nimbus around Matthews head. And now that I've made the kind of well-reasoned arguments that you seem to understand, I'll make a personal observation about you: if you like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you've got a lot of growing still to do. I don't care how you fold it, that hankies got snot on it.

I hadn't read this particular blog post before because I honestly had never heard of Chris Matthews. Paul's humorous post caught my attention. So, I read back through the posts. I think Paul may be correct about you FAF. Perhaps it's time for some soul searching.

More to the point however, you said in your first post, "MoJo blog contributors must keep with tradition in posting lame, non-issue stories."

I couldn't help but notice that you're all over this blog. When you deride MoJo blog contributors, you must be including yourself. You should really give more thought before making comments like these. The set you insult may include you.

Chris Matthews has opposed the insane fiasco in Iraq from the beginning. Hillary Clinton has allowed the skin to be burned off of babies backs and entire families to be destroyed by the thousands for the sake of a few political points more. Hillary Clinton is a political whore if there ever was one. Only a woman (or man) who is the enemy of human rights would vote for Hillary Clinton. End of discussion.

I'll take issue with Chris Matthews being opposed to the invasion of Iraq from the beginning. He was in bed with the administration and very much in favor of it at the beginning.

And did you happen to flip to the "other" CNN station (on Direct TV it is Chanel 204) when that talk show twit with the awful voice who seems to be on all evening was making fun of Hilary's voice--a voice that I consider very well modulated and lovely, really. I only flip to that chanel in passing because, me, I can't stand His voice.

Misanthropic Scott- I am not a blogger- Although I comment on the spin and links posted by people who devote their life to the activity of blogging, I am not a contributor. I am not the one posting the story with my peronsal spin. There are a dime a dozen bloggers, it's completely saturated right now. Case in point- look at the blog links on this page- it's basically all the same content- why not have one or two blogs?

As someone who has listened to Hardball virtually every day for the last several years, I am surprised that some folks criticize CM as some sort of supporter or former supporter of the current military fiasco. My recollection is that he was one of the first major pundits who strongly disagreed with the mounting disaster of the Bush "nation-building" failure. This was a counter to the "can't pull out - thats not manly" line of crap common at that time and still resiliently bantered.

However, it does seem that he has a strong inclination to grill both Clintons merciliously. That kind of resentment/betrayal is hardly unique. Bill certainly ought not be surprised by that 'tar baby'. Not that Hillary doesn't invite some of this commentary with her insistence that "the vote" wasn't an admittable mistake. Where have we heard that kind of denial before, say, Election 2004 debates? And lets keep some US troops in Iraq - for how long and in whose company? Doesn't mean I won't vote for her (Clinton-Obama in '08) but I believe there is a calculating realpolitik machine in part there and, in my opinion, denying it is no testament to gender solidarity.

JKM--though at some point, Matthews did adopt that attitude, he was indeed a very enthusiastic supporter of what Bush was doing for a considerable amount of time. "Missision Accomplished" had him practically swooning.

chris matthews is obsessed with hillary. he drools when he speaks of her. has it occured to him that bill is in the process of curing aids on our planet? I think the guy is afraid that he will choke when he has to address mrs. clinton as "madame president." get that man a bib.

I don't do cable, unless I'm trapped in a waiting room, so I have no opinion on Matthews and the rest of the so-called MainStream Media, except to note their abysmal failure to cover the American political Right with any objectivity for forty years, but I digress.

I've read Dees's blog, and find it to be thoughtful and extremely well-written, as is to expected; moreover, I have read serious issues seriously addressed there.

FAF, I wanted to like your comment when I saw your tag, but alas: you don't live up to it; it appears you put the "dumb" in for a reason. Remember: "Sit down. Read. Educate yourself for the coming conflicts." I believe a woman said that and it's always seemed like good advice to me.

Finally, some people are coming to their senses on this non-story. I don't see the nuances in Matthews tone that indicate he is some Pro-Bush, Clinton hating guy. I'm simply pointing out that the whole premise of this story being posted is bogus. All along I've stated the real supporters of Bush are the Fox News crew and all the writers at The Weekly Standard.

Johneib- perhaps you should arm yourself with some facts before accusing me of not being educated on this non-story. I do have cable and I do sometimes watch Hardball, Countdown and even Fox News on occasion. I also get my news from several sources, not just liberal slanted sources like MoJo.

Why, this is so intelligent! In fact, we should only have one mega-state here in the US, because obviously everyone is quite similar. And why have various versions of textbooks? They all say the same thing! ONE DEFINITIVE SOURCE, I say! And who shall overlord it all? Of course, our rightous master, the one divinely-inspired leader, his majestic -- Dubya.

Right.

Chris Matthews is a pro Bushie boy who loves men and obsesses over their appearance. Likewise, he has given no small amount of time to his hatred at Hillary and women in general. CM is a girly man, a commander codpiece lover like Harriet Myers and Harris and Condi. CM like O'Reilly, Hannity, Scarborough and so many other catholic republicans are like so many girly men southerners in their dislike any woman who isn't barefoot and in the kitchen. Catholics(men and women) and the catholic church are most egregiously guilty of holding women in a second class status. To them women are baby machines. Alito is also of that ilk as his membership in The Concerned Alumni of Princeton a clearly mysoginistic group. All fundamentalists be they Catholic or Islamic or evangelical fundie are very much the same as regars their viewpoint toward women. In reality they are girly men who are male weaklings fearful about their own sexuality. Though I am a catholic I am not their kind of catholic. Chris did one good thing he revealed the secret Opus Dei organization, he outed them. When this attitude towrds women is finally stamped out all women will attain a better life and the entire world will be a better place and that is exactly what God wants. He gave us free will so that we may 'choose' and some males, girly men, have chosen very poorly, grasshopper. Demeaning women is so totally wrong. But so many catholic males (and southerners)including pedophile priests have so much trouble with their own sexuality and just never seem to grow up and become men. The catholic obsession with sex and disgust thereof is endemic and epidemic. Catholic, southern and priestly girly men are stunted in their growth/ maturation into adult manhood.

I'm thinking that when you resume your normal medication routine, things won't look quite so grim.

All you have to do is watch CMs programs to determine that your claim that he is a Bush supporter has little merit. I think he has a number of faults but being a Bush supporter or a supporter of this insane Iraq venture certainly isn't one of them. As a matter of fact, I think he has a strident anti-administration bent. And I simply don't get the anti-women bias you (and others) attribute to him. He doesn't seem to like Hillary or Bill much but then resentment abounds in many corners with regard to these folks. Myself, I kinda like 'em both.

As far as your bias against Catholics ... whew!
