Word to Dems: Don't Count Your Chickens
I was born in 1971, and the first president I remember is Jimmy Carter. I "campaigned" for his re-election in 1980, and at such a tender young age I learned that my candidate would nearly always lose. Twelve years of Republican rule molded my young mind into believing that it was impossible for Democrats to win. I was stunned when Clinton won in 1992, and flat out didn't believe the polls that said Clinton was trouncing Dole before the 1996 election.
Nowadays, Democrats seem to have the opposite problem. They are dancing on the graves of folks like Karl Rove (who, by the way, can't dance) and Bush 43. A word of advice from a dyed-in-the-wool pessimist: Not so fast.
Although conservatives are seriously unhappy with their stable of candidates, their people are still dogging the Dems in imagined head-to-heads. In a recent TIME poll, Hillary Clinton loses to John McCain, 42%-48%, and to Rudy Giuliani 41%-50%. Even though Dems favor Clinton over Obama, he fares better than Clinton does against Republicans. TIME has Obama losing by a hair to either McCain or Giuliani. (This despite Firefighter-gate! Astounding!)
TIME attributes the surprising (though not to this hardened loser) results to the fact that the voters shedding their loyalty to the Republican Party don't think of McCain or Giuliani as, you know, Republicans. (I wonder how they feel about that? It's like having your white friends tell you that you're the special black guy! You're OK!)
On the other hand, it may be that Clinton, whom voters know and, err, love, has reached her maximum percentage potential, but that Obama and Edwards still have room to win over additional voters.

Cam,
I agree with you. the dems are far from out of the woods and will have to work very hard to win in 2008. The republican machine to control elections and destroy everyone via viciousness, smear and anything else they can think of may well prevail in '08.
Repubs are the biggest threat to our democracy and will destroy it if they are not stopped. The catholic church,my church, is totally committed to the repub party ever since Pope John Paul II put Reagan in the WH and aligned the catholic church with the rethug party of war-death-kill for profit and world domination.
Should the rethugs win in '08 I am checking out. I know I will not be able to watch my country dissappear into some "Totalitarian Republican Jihadist Theocracy" although the Pope and most catholics are committed to that end. The current and previous Popes have done so much and such diabolical damage to America that we may never recover even if the Dems win the next election.
Popes Pius XI and XII endorsed Hitler and the Nazi Party prior to during and after WWII and we all know the outcome of that support. Should a similar thing happen again I will denounce my catholicism, become jewish and fight the catholics, especially the Irish catholics who are the most vicious catholics. See Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Joe Scarborough,Alberto Gonzales, Peggy Noonan, Phyllis Schlafly, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito, Twooey(OFBIC) et.al.
As long as I am on this earth there will never be another Holocaust, ever again. And the current holocausts in Iraq, Afghanistan and even the holocaust that is taking place in America as evidenced by the shredding of our Constitution and the loss of Habeas Corpus and torture, and secret rendition, and GITMO and Abu Ghraib and on etc. ewtc. ad nauseam.
