Catholic League Displeased by Edible Nude Crucifix
The Catholic League’s Bill Donahue, who must not be using the Piss Christ for comparison, has called the six-foot, loincloth-less, milk chocolate Jesus sculpture that is set for April 1st Manhattan display “one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever.”
What’s truly scandalous about this story is that the gallery is “considering its options” after an onslaught of angry protests. That the exhibition could get canceled is preposterous; the Catholic League should be excited that an artist has created a really captivating reminder of how bad it would suck to get crucified naked in the name of saving a bunch of sinning ingrates only to have the sacrifice remembered by a holiday synonymous with chocolate-gorging.
Oh, and also there’s some sort of amendment or something that protects free speech.

Despite the hubbub about this new exhibit, my first encounter with a chocolate Jesus was back in 1976, and it was at a fundamentalist country fair. Now, suddenly, the very same idea is sacrilegious.

Scott,
Hello again. I agree with you that the "artist" has the right to free speech. However, can you explain to me how his right to free speech is being infringed upon or violated?

When you eat a wafer you are not eating the body parts of Jesus. The homo-erotic and canibalistic implications of licking the lips of Jesus or munching on his fingertips has got to be too much for repressed puritanical American christians.
The artist was a South American. That Latin culture is more open to the natural facts of life.

I'm not religious at all... but I'll tell you what's offensive... Easter... as we know it today... is sooooo offensive. Aside from the digusting display of mindless consumer culture... the point is that... no matter what you believe... atheist or christian... Jesus had a great message that is still relevant today... and if I were arrested by the Romans in the middle of the night and nailed to a cross with a mock "crown" on my head for so-called "crimes against the state"... being a decendent of King David and all... and then people remembered that injustice by gorging on little chocolate bunnies 2000 years later... I'd have a hard time with the whole forgiveness thing... I'd be a little pissed... which is the whole point of this gallery piece. You'd think the Christians would agree. Unfortunately... modern day "Roman Christians" seem to have much more in common with the Romans than they do with Jesus.

I meant "Roman Catholics" of course.

Guy Incognito,
Excellent points, of course. However, here is a rather lengthy and convincing article that says that perhaps no one alive has anything in common with Jesus. It suggests, rather convincingly, that Jesus may have been a fictional character.

We have freedom of speech. We can display the art and also hold a conference on questioning the alleged Jewish Holocaust. Both are entitled to free speech and we need to rejoice in our freedom and support it. We have freedom of speech when we have freedom to offend the Jews and the goys as well. Let us practice our freedoms more, with enthusiasm.

As a devout atheist and antitheist, perhaps it is not for me to say. But, that never stopped me before. Are they upset because the only proper way to eat Jesus is in the form of little wafers? (2 4 6 8 time to transubsantiate. - Tom Lehrer)
Furthermore, as this choco-jesus is said to be anatomically correct, I think it's very important to remember, DON'T BITE THE HOST!!
WRT free speach, just to play devil's advocate, no one is suggesting legal action against the artist or hotel, so this is actually about liberty, rather than freedom. It's a minor point, true, but still valid.
