MSNBC Drops Imus, Charges Against Duke LAX Players Dropped
And somewhere in these two stories (here and here) is a perfect snapshot of race relations in America.
Wish I knew what it was. After all, Imus had pulled this kind of crap before (see Ifill, Gwen.) And the Duke situation is so muddy...for one thing, the state attorney general who just cleared the guys is up for reelection. Not so different from DA Nifong, who may pushed for prosecution as a way to further his own ambitions. Having changed her story many times, the accuser certainly doesn't seem credible at this point (legally anyway), but then there remains the email of one of the LAX players saying that he wanted to kill strippers and rip off their skin. And the insults. Testimony of other witnesses about abusive behavior, etc.
Words are not deeds, of course. But whatever happened that night, it is hardly something for anyone to celebrate.

So let's see here: There is little or no hard evidence to try these guys, the accuser's story has more holes in it than Swiss cheese, and she's got a history of falsely accusing lovers/clients/causual hook-ups of rape. And yet Clara Jeffries strongly hints they are guilty anyway (presumably because the allegations of a black prostitute - oh, sorry. sex worker - are assumed to be more credible than a bunch of white rich kids).
Ever hear of "innocent until PROVEN guilty?"
You got to love the slant on this "blog." The accuser has a long history of arrests- at least 10 arrests. You don't hear her speaking up because she knows her story was BS to begin with. While the Duke players do seem kind of like snotty, priveleged kids, I really feel bad that they had to go through all that. It's horrible.
I don't really see any connection between this story and Imus. Race wasn't really an issue in the Duke case- just some nappy headed hoes trying to make some quick cash.

I read this blog differently than the last two commenters.
I do not see Ms. Jeffery attempting to accuse any of the young men of the serious crimes alleged. This had FUBAR written all over it. Intoxicated adolescents (primarily white) and black strippers at a function where insults were reported voiced by dissatisfied attendees and idiotic emails proporting to indicate inclination. Oy!
I immediately saw the connection between the Imus deal and the Duke situation. Both impact on the tenuous state of race (and class) relations in America but from oddly different ends of the spectrum. It did seem apparent early on that there was little credible evidence that a crime had been committed in the Duke case. A match had been lit next to flammable material and it roared to life scaring some innocent "rich white kids" in the bargain. This by virtue of an apparently manufactured invention which had some of the aspects of a likely scenario to keep the fire alive (save the lack of any credible evidence). Unacceptible but surprising?
I believe that Ms. Jeffery was merely pointing out the incongruity of the two situations which makes for confusing examples of social situations exemplifing race relations in America. And if she wasn't, I do.

In the South, it is easy(for all racial groups) to get railroaded into prison. It is really a different country. This is not a racial thing. You Yankees just don't understand.
