Armed Man Wounded Trying to Defend Idaho Town from Shooter

Gun rights groups responded to the Virginia Tech shooting by saying that if more students had been packing heat, they could have stopped Cho. A writer in the National Review even blamed the victims for not defending themselves, as Jon blogged. It's not just rhetoric. Texas Gov. Rick Perry and state legislators are actually considering repealing the ban on guns on campus. Rep. Frank Corte Jr., a Republican from San Antonio, said gun-free zones are known "by the bad guys that this is where people don't have firearms."

Well, an armed student was wounded trying to defend an Idaho college town against a man on a shooting rampage last weekend. In Moscow, Idaho, Jason Hamilton "shot and killed one law enforcement officer and wounded Pete Husmann, 20, a University of Idaho mechanical engineering student from Coeur d'Alene. Husmann had armed himself and run to the sound of the shots."

The exception, does not disprove the rule that armed folk do not suffer indignities like the defenseless chickens.

And then there's things like this:

Obviously, being armed does not guarantee that you will be able to stop an attack—nobody has ever claimed that. And of course being unarmed does not guarantee that you WON'T be able to stop an attack. There are anecdotal examples in both instances.

But personally, I'd like the option to be able to defend myself, and I support your right to NOT exercise that option. That's all.

i don't see why this is the "exception." it sounds like confirmation of the notion that more guns equals more people shot. this is a minor bit of news, but it's amazing how these sorts of little details don't come out when they don't support the NRA's agenda. i'm just saying...

Armed folk shoot crooks, hence "confirmation of the notion that more guns equals more people shot." Also saves taxpayer's money with no need for jail time and trials and endless appeals.

Unless you have a loved one or a really, really, really close friend in the line of fire, running towards gunshots is pretty idiotic.

In Coeur d'Alene you have some real "goobers" there. I know, I met some. It reminds me of the hill country in Appalachia. But that is another story(see the movie Deliverance). Just a case of social Darwinism, survival of the smartest. Similar to the drivers and pedestrians that are also dumb in The City.

ok, that's all well and good, big john, but that didn't happen; the supposed hero got shot and just made the situation worse. the speculation that more guns would keep us safer was everywhere in the weeks after virginia tech, but it was based on nothing other than wishful thinking. here's a real-life situation and it didn't work out quite as planned for the citizen-gunman, but let's just dismiss it as an inconvenient exception, eh?

Is there any particular reason the comment I left last night was not posted?

Just because you do not possess the courage to help others when danger lurks (as I see you did not have the courage to even post your name) does not mean someone else should be disparaged for their courage. I'm sure all the police officers out there thank you for calling them idiots.

Fight back, or cower in a corner and pray he passes you by.

Take your pick.

But do ask yourself which path is most likely to make the next potential killer have second thoughts.

"Suicide by Armed Student", or "Suicide by Grandmother w/ .38" just won't make the same sort of media splash as "Suicide by Cop".

Big John - armed folks also shoot innocents and family members. This exception does NOT prove the rule. You can never apply slap-dash logic to social suituations and expect the same result every time (Do you understand that? Or do I have to spell it out in small words?).
And Grace, I don't think the poster was making a derogatory comment about police officers. But he does have a point. If Pete Husmann grabbed a gun a ran towards the shots and was only wounded, then he was very lucky. And I'm certain the Police are less than pleased with citizens arming themselves and running towards gunshots. Why? Because it's more people that the Police have to look after and a greater chance that one of them (the Officers) are going to get shot trying to save some vigilante's ass. Protecting your home is one thing; actively running into a situation for which you are not trained is another.

...and by the way...Big John? if you need a gun to feel protected from "indignities" than I feel pretty sorry for you. I don't need a gun to protect myself or my family, even from someone who's armed...

mmmmm. Carries a gun to feel safe and manly and calls himself 'big john'. Compensating for something? :-)

A gun owned for self defense is much more likely to be used to kill you or someone you are related to than it is in defending yourself.

I think there are plenty of people who do not support the NRA's radical politics who still believe that citizens who have passed background checks and been trained in firearm use have the right to carry firearms for defense of self and others. There will always be cases that support one side or the other, however, until the police can protect us all the time, or we somehow magically become like Japan, where there are almost no privately owned firearms (or firearm deaths, for that matter), law-abiding people need options.

Q: A bunch of guys grab guns and run toward the shooting and so do you... who do you shoot?

A: The guy with the gun.

Q: Who does everyone else shoot?

The guy with the gun.

Q: Who are you?

A: The guy with the gun.

See any possible problem with that?

QrazyQuat-Are you joking? Your comment implies that anyone who holds a gun is completely devoid of the ability to think/assess a situation.

Yeah Nadia, you've identified some mindless stereotyping there.
Some folks decry it from one side of their mouth, and spout it from the other.

Any word on if they are going to close down the training facilities Jason Hamilton received instruction at or the sporting store he bought his firearms at. I hope they don't close down that long ranger sniper explosive shooting course that takes place near Orofino. Jason Hamilton is said to have attended that regularly with his friends.

Hey bubba, I am one of the "goobers" in CDA. You sound like a typical California or Washington liberal pin head. It is now a year later and the shooter is dead and the guy that helped end it is a local hero. There will always be crazy people doing things with firearms and other implements of destruction, keeping legally owned firearms out of the hands of the people just makes it easier for them to take more people with them. I doubt most of the folks inclined to read this website will agree but most of the 1.5 million gun owners in this state will. Idaho has a low crime rate and a high ownership of firearm rate, I doubt that is a coincidence. You all can surrender your civil rights in the name of alleged "security". Personally I personally prefer to take the initiative and depend on my neighbors and common sense rather than the government protecting me, they are never around anyway.
