New White House Report Pokes Anti-Immigration Foes with Sharp Stick

The White House has released a report by the president’s Council of Economic Advisers that concludes, "Immigration has a positive effect on the American economy as a whole and on the income of native-born American workers."

People on our side of the debate appreciate the White House's efforts, but the report is unlikely to convince these folks. In fact, it'll probably make them more angry.

The report by the corporate elite is to try to maintain power over labor. The corporate elite tells its workers if you try to unionize or ask for more money, we have millions at the border who will take your job and work for less and keep their mouths shut and not complain. This is the real life of the worker. Don't tell me that illegal immigration is good for me, it is good for the employer. Don't get me started about the grid lock on the freeways from all the people coming here, not to mention the environmental pollution and smog.

Who is it that is anti-immigration? Maybe the American Indians... hmmm.
Maybe the White House meant to say their foes were anti-illegal immigration...

I agree completely with Billy and George. I live in NC, which has a tremendous illegal immigrant population and I've seen the devastating effect it has had on my community in particular. Construction is a booming industry, and that has greatly contributed to the growth of illegals. We have schools that have had to set up trailers to separate the non-English speaking students so that they can be taught English. Before that, teachers had to decide between catching up the children who didn't speak English and leaving behind the ones who did, or teach the English speakers to the detriment of the non-English speakers.
The public school system isn't the only area that is suffering. As you are probably aware, many illegals cannot get health coverage, so they flood the local ERs because they cannot be turned away there, and the public hospital is their only means of health care.
If these people were LEGAL, they would speak English and have access to better education and health care for their children and better treatment from their employers. They are not benefitting from their illegal status, and neither are the communities in which they live.
I have to assume that people who say we are "against immigration" are either too stupid to understand that we are against ILLEGAL immigration, or they are one of the many who are benefitting from the system currently in place and are therefore furthering their own agenda while hiding behind misleading language.

I just wanted to say that my husband is an illegal immigrant, who was deported in 2004. My daughter and I were left in pretty bad shape emotionally and financially. We had spent almost 8 years trying to legalize his status before he was detained for months and finally deported. All I know is that he tried to apply legally to come here and was denied, he never received a penny from anyone while he was here, he paid his taxes and supported a family. Since he was deported I lost my home, my truck, filed for bankruptcy, started receiving government aid (welfare and medicaid) and dealt with a very confused child who has no idea what happened to her father. The only person who has benfitted from my husband's deportation is our attorney.

From my perspective the ONLY way to make any change in our current immigration system is to give a chance to the people who want to live here. The current policy of the State Department, when asked to issue a visa to someone from my husband's country, is to require that that person have both property in their own country, as well as a certain amount of verifiable funds in a bank account. The people who own property and have that kind of money available are not the ones interested in moving to the US for work. Common sense says to me that if we offer the people who need the jobs the chance to come legally they will in fact come legally.

I am currently in my husband's country for the summer, since he is not allowed to return to the US. Seeing first hand the poverty and desperation is overwelming. The choices people are forced to make are very sad. I don't know the answer, but I can tell you I do not trust our government to have anyone's best interests at heart.

Hey Sarah,

You say that your husband is an Illegl..? I was under the impression that when a foreigner marries a citizen, they become a citezen too..? Or maybe you never REALLY got married...? Just shacking up with an Illegal..? Your daughter is his anchor baby, and he was taking a job from a real citizen. You get no sympathy from us here..Maybe you should marry someone hwo is legal, and have a good life. Stop blameing us for the behavior of the CRIMINAL Illegals...ok?

Thanks

Tim, citizenship is NOT automatic upon marrying a citizen. One still has to comply with immigration requirements, i.e. fees, visas, background checks etc.

that said, I have a big fat "awwwww. Poor, poor you.." for sarah. Remember her husband "tried but was denied" so he shouldn't be blamed for breaking the law, nor should he have to suffer the consequences when he finally gets caught. She and the kid shouldn't have to lose their meal-ticket just because he broke or bent a few laws raking in his ill-gotten gains. Why should HE be punished? After all, OTHER criminals don't have to...oh, wait...yes they do. And sometimes they're even taken away from their wives and little babies. So, awwwww...poor Sarah.

something that may have gotten glossed over in the report...while there is a *small* net gain from ALL immigration, legal and illegal, that gain is at the top of the heap, not at the bottom where the commons dwell. The federal government (and it's corporate overlords) reaps all the "benefits" while the state and local governments (you and I) get the bills for providing health care, social care, and education to the illegals. Not to mention the cost to incarcerate them until their deportation orders are finally past appeal.
