Media Donates Politically in Small Numbers -- But Mostly to Democrats

The investigative unit at MSNBC.com just published a long study of which journalists donate money to political candidates and causes. Campaign contributions by a journalist are often seen as acceptable things -- the assumption being that the contribution is part of the journalist's private life and the partisan support it implies won't affect his or her work. Some newsrooms don't care, some ban contributions by political reporters and editors (Abe Rosenthal, the former New York Times editor, is reported to have said, "I don't care if you sleep with elephants as long as you don't cover the circus."), and some ban donations altogether. But the workplace rules that govern or don't govern this issue are less interesting that the picture it paints of journalism as an industry.

Of the 144 journalists who made political contributions between 2004 and the first quarter of 2007, 125 gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Just 17 gave to Republicans, while two gave to both. There are some obvious ones -- a producer for Bill O'Reilly gave to Republicans -- but there are some surprises -- a researcher for Brit Hume gave to Democrats. (Penance?)

Salon.com loves Democrats, as do Newsweek and Rolling Stone. But perhaps no one helps out the left more than The New Yorker, which places no restrictions on donations and had fully 10 writers and staffer donate to Democrats (and none to Republicans). You can see the full list here. What is it about journalism as a business that attracts left-leaning folks? Or is there something about working in journalism that makes a lefty out of you over time? Speculation is welcomed in the comments.

Maybe the most valuable conclusion here, though, is that journalists mostly take pains to maintain objectivity -- the 144 who have donated represent less than one percent of the reported 100,000 journalists nationwide.

Ms. Clinton knows that most of the media is in the Democratic party pocket so now she is going after talk radio, along with Senator Boxer, to get all the comrades in line.

Yes Jonathan, 144 is a tiny percentage of 100,000 journalists, but what percentage is it of the ones who were asked about donations, or who actually answered when asked?
Were all journalists nation wide asked, and did they all respond? Otherwise the "less than 1%" figure is invalid.

Checking on the original MSNBC story to see how the contributors were identified, here's what I found:
"There appear to be far more than 144 donating journalists, but MSNBC.com limited its search to:
— Federal candidates, PACs and parties in the records of the Federal Election Commission, not the separate state campaign records.
— The period January 2004 through the first quarter of this year.
— Donors in news jobs, not corporate executives or publishers, who are allowed by nearly every news organization to donate.
Campaigns are spotty about reporting the occupation and employer of donors.
We checked only the company names of the 200 largest newspapers, out of more than 1,400 dailies in the nation."

So, uh yeah..., I wouldn't play too fast and loose with that "less than 1%" figure.

-- oh, come on! that question is a little too precious, and the answer is the usual one:

... the term "lefty" is just slander in this context. what you are describing is a bunch of intelligent, educated people that have learned to think, and inevitably the emotional sales-pitch of the "conservatives" offends them because it casually violates rational thought.

... the Dems are much the same as the GOP, but at least the positions they adopt are actually reachable by intellectually coherent means; which makes them supportable, just.

Johnathon,
You may be correct, as far as the study goes. But how about all of the networks giving endless positive coverage and cover to Bush and the rethuglikkkans especially Rupert Murdoch who devotes his entire network to the benefit of the Bushies and the rethugs.
Some contribution.
And lets not forget Chris Matthews, Bob Novak, Tucker Carlson, Tony Snow-job before he was in the WH, Glenn Beck, Joe Scarborough, Tim Russert etc. What a bunch of rethug creeps.

Those and so many others in the MSM have made extraordinary contributions to Bush-Co and the republicant's(can't stop killing for profit).

We in the center and on the left got almost NO coverage. Were it not for Amy Goodman, Molly Ivins, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Kieth Olbermann we would have had no media outlet.

Damn the rethugs and their enablers, the two big religions, the corporatocracy and the neocons of PRO-DEATH for PROFIT and world domination.

I think bob t's insightful comments prove admirably Eleanor Lister's claim that Democrats are Democrats because they are simply sooooo rational they couldn't be anything else. Yup, there's a whole lotta rational going on on the left side of the aisle.
