More Work to Do on Global Warming

From the BBC:

The public believes the effects of global warming on the climate are not as bad as politicians and scientists claim, a poll has suggested.
The Ipsos Mori poll of 2,032 adults - interviewed between 14 and 20 June - found 56% believed scientists were still questioning climate change.
There was a feeling the problem was exaggerated to make money, it found.
The Royal Society said most climate scientists believed humans were having an "unprecedented" effect on climate.
The survey suggested that terrorism, graffiti, crime and dog mess were all of more concern than climate change.

Wow. "Dog mess." It just goes to show, people care more about small, immediate problems than huge, long-term ones. Perhaps the poll respondents should read some of Mother Jones' coverage of global warming, like "As the World Burns" or "The Thirteenth Tipping Point." Or they should check out the Mother Jones Environment and Health page and its resident blog, the Blue Marble.

And for those who know the truth, here are the arguments you need when talking to a global warming denier.

Jonny, don't under estimate the stress from doggy poo. It is not a small problem for some people. If every body would clean up after their dogs, we would not have this problem. In middle eastern culture dogs are unclean.

The “truth”? The only “truth” about global warming is that it will be another excuse to manipulate the gullible dumb-ass patriot peasants into killing each other. Prediction: In 2075 the US will invade Canada in order to safeguard the remaining ice for “freedom and democracy”. Stupid dumb-ass 40+ year old patriots will encourage their stupid dumb-ass 20 year old sons to enlist “to help Jesus spread freedom and democracy to Canadians”. The war will be glorious. The rich will laugh their asses off at the peasants. Life will go on – AS USUAL.

The smart Canadians and the few ‘mericans with any brains should be buying property in New Zealand now. Life is about avoiding the scum at the bottom AND the top of society. And, trying to “educate” a peasant with an imaginary friend is pointless. Beside, look at the great job you socialist did with the US school systems.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.
New Zealand looks like it will not change from the climate, but if a lot of Canadians move there, it could change the Kiwi culture. Lock and load Kiwis.

Global warming doesn't necessarilly mean that the whole world will get hotter. In fact some parts will get colder depending on the changes caused within the climate.
Antarctica is getting warmer - talk to the scientists who are there and taking measurements right now. Whether that is caused by humans is still unknown and the accurate measurements are only from the last 40yrs or so - too short of a time frame to get an accurate idea.
Just recently a chunk of ice as large as the Brit. Isles fell off the side of it. The largest piece in recorded history.
Simple logic says that we humans must be having an effect by our discharges into the atmosphere as there is so many of us clustered in relatively small areas.

The biggest reason that so many people think that global warming isn't such a big deal, and that there is still a controversy among scientists is because they get their information from the MSM, which is controlled by people who deny global warming.

"Simple logic says that we humans must be having an effect by our discharges into the atmosphere as there is so many of us clustered in relatively small areas." - Bushbaptist

Exactly. Anyone who doubts this just needs to look at any place where an animal has been introduced with no predators to control their population. Or look at places where the deer population has exploded. A species with no predators will expand until their environment can no longer support them. If they continue to increase, the local environment suffers. Mankind has no predators, and our local environment is the entire Earth.

Simply logic is that we humans are CO2 producers. We produce global warming by breathing. Communist Russia did their part by reducing the population by 60million, so too Communist China 100million. Plagues and pestilence will reduce population like it always have, and don't forget war. Don't worry about global warming. Nature has its ways to put things(you) back into balance. The arrogance of humans is appalling. You are just a little worm, like the flower of grass that blooms today and then is thrown into the fire.

So, the common folk don't fully buy into what 'The Experts' tell them...? Huh!?!?
Maybe the common folk have noticed that throughout history, 'The Experts' have almost always ended up reversing themselves on what their "consensus opinion" prounounced to be 'The Truth'..., their 'Scientific Data' turning out to be flawed, or misinterpreted.

Anyone else remember 30 years of hearing from 'The Experts' how: "Eating eggs will send your cholesterol through the roof! Heart-Attack-City, for sure." which turned out to be completely wrong? The only dissenting voices written off as "Tools of the Poultry Industry"?
Those were the voices who turned out to be correct. 'The Experts' had it wrong, in spite of having "a consensus of opinion".

I'm from the '60s.
We were the people who wore t-shirts with the slogan: "Question Authority".
We still should question ALL authority, and if they go ballistic over someone DARING to cast doubt on their conclusions, then you know all you need to know about their pronouncements.

gvc - while I agree that some measure of skepticism is reasonable, I think that any evaluation of risk has to take the scope of the problem into account. Comparing cholesterol in eggs, which affects us only as individuals, to global warming, which affects every living thing on the entire planet, is hardly a balanced argument. And frankly, I have faith in the opinions of people who have studied and educated themselves on the subjects of environment and climate - far more faith than I do in the opinions of average folk like you and me. Scientists are occasionally wrong, to be sure, but they are far more likely to get it right. Or do you also believe that the Earth is flat?

Posted by: Deacon on 07/06/07 at 2:51 PM  Respond

Good point!
Fact is, 'The Experts' at one time told us that not only was the Earth flat, but that it was also the Center of the Universe.
Were they right?
After all, they had educated themselves and studied these things, you know? People were Expected to 'Have Faith' in their opinions, and they did.
They assured the masses that they were FAR the best qualified to understand the issues, and make such pronouncements on the nature of Creation...
Only they were utterly and completely wrong.
And on many points of science and physics, even such a learned modern day giant as Albert Einstein has proven to have been wrong.
As to the risk: Humans, the Earth, even Polar Bears have survived considerably warmer interglacial periods than this one. The Sahara has been a grassland, a savannah, teaming with wildlife during warmer interglacials. Fact is, I don't believe anybody even knows what the risks are, no matter how many scary videos they've produced based on the pretension that they do, leading to the obvious conclusion that we must let THEM tell us how to live and behave, or the nightmare they've just shown us will become a reality.
(Isn't that always the bottom line? Live by Our guidelines, or be damned to some form of Hell? Damned Right I'm Skeptical!!)

gvc is right. The scientest told us about the black, white, and yellow races and the suppose superiority of the white race, at least according to Darwin, the founder of evolution and eugenics. Don't forget the blood letting to solve problems and former President Washington died of that.
