Main Catch in War on "Virtually a Free Citizen" in Pakistan
New evidence that the Bush Administration's war on terror is more show than substance.
In a 2004 presidential debate, Bush sought to assure Americans that the war on terror was going well. He presented the case of a Pakistani nuclear scientist named A.Q. Khan who had been caught selling secrets to rogue elements across the world. "We busted the A.Q. Khan network," Bush said. "This was a proliferator out of Pakistan that was selling secrets to places like North Korea and Libya."
Scary stuff, right? But according to a new AP article, highlighted by Steve Benen at the Washington Monthly's blog, Khan has been living a life of luxury, relaxing at his "villa in the capital" and meeting with friends, family, and associates. An official connected to Pakistan's nuclear program told the AP, "[Khan] is virtually a free citizen."
So what's going on? Turns out, the Bush Administration looked the other way while Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf pardoned Khan and set up the nuclear scientist's absurd form of house arrest. According to Seymour Hersh, Khan is "revered in Pakistan as the father of the country’s nuclear bomb," and parts of the Pakistani government have long been suspected as being complicit in the international trade of nuclear secrets. Khan hardly seemed like an appropriate scapegoat, considering all this.
Who knows what Khan is doing with his freedom — all we do know is that he isn't serving the sentence he deserves. Hersh's 2004 article in the New Yorker on this topic is well worth a read. It explains why Pakistan is willing to be a major ally in the United States' war on terror, and why the U.S. makes ridiculous exceptions for Musharraf and his government. Anyone who has read it can't be surprised by the new reports of A.Q. Khan's kid-glove "jail time."
PS — Iraqi nuclear scientists are even more free than Khan, and may be stirring up trouble around the globe. The reason? The American military didn't give a damn about them after the invasion.
PPS — While we're on the topic of the Washington Monthly, check out Paul Glastris' editor's note from the last issue. Glastris argues that Democrats should be more public about the fact that they make wars like Kosovo (i.e. victories) and Republicans make wars like Iraq (i.e. failures).

Why does Kahn deserve to be in jail for showing non-nuclear weapon nations how to become nuclear weapon nations?
Are only light skinned people in the US and Europe and Israel allowed to have nuclear bombs?

"criticalthinker",
The two sentances in your post are not related. They imply that the only reason Kahn should be stopped is the color of his employers. Do you think maybe, just maybe, that it is about stability rather than race?
Unless you have some facts to suggest that it is a race issue then move your arguement to a more accurate place. Im sure you have something to add.

Johnathan,
Im not sure we want to go tit for tat with the republicans on late 20th century military 'victories':
Vietnam - democrat - failure
Iran Hostage Rescue - democrat - failure
Panama - republican - success
Hati - republican - success
Grenada - republican - success
Iraq 1 - republican - success
Somalia - democrat - failure
Kosovo - democrat - success
Iraq 2 - republican - failure
Afganastan - republican - too early to tell? A little of both?
Sure if you add up the true lasting benefit of the republican successes I think they are outstripped by the lasting damage of their sucesses I think the democrats fair about as badly in the same exercise (if for no other reason than pure body count from Vietnam).
These kinds of comparisons are not a good idea. They remind me too much of Senator Dole's innane comment about the lives lost in Democrat wars (meaning WWII, Korea and Vietnam).

Israel is the major nuclear power in that part of the world. Olmert admitted as much. Since Israel is not registered and under the supervision of the UN agency, the Administration and Congress are breaking U.S. law by continuing to give aid to Israel. This shows you the power of "white Jewish privilege".

Ismael,
Again, why does this have to be about 'white Jewish privilege'? Could it be that Israel is the only friendly country in the region and THAT is why we look the other way?
Just a thought.

The United States government is required by law (USC Title 22, Chapter 72, subchapter 1) to invoke certain sanctions or prohibitions against any "person" (as defined by the act, a person includes a foreign country) who has been certified by the President as having engaged in any prohibited action, including "the use, development, production,
stockpiling, or other acquisition of any nuclear explosive device."
The sanctions include:
(1) Ban on dealings in Government finance
(2) Restrictions on operations
Prohibition (1) includes the dealing in any US Government debt
instrument, in other words, the buying or selling of Government bonds.
Prohibition (2) includes any new business operations in the US.
The official position of the US Government has been one of willful ignorance of an Israeli nuclear capacity. This shows "white Jewish privilege".

Again Ishmael,
How does your quotation of the pertinent law prove white jewish privilege? And while we are on that does this privilege of which you speak extend to the darker skinned Jews of the world including those in Israel? Is the great US racist conspiracy that you are talking about have some detailed mechanisms for making sure that the benefits it extends to white jews is in some way is denied to darker Jews? And here is the really hard part for your theory Ish. What if a darker skinned jewish person was the head of the government of israel? In such a case would your, excuse me, our racist conspiracy suddenly turn on Israel and put forth the sanctions that Title 22, Ch 72, sub ch 1 calls for.
Just a thought that it might be a little more complex than skin color when we are talking about weapons on this scale. That is not to say that racism is not out there and than there is nothing about racism in the policies of ours and other governments.
But please feel free to reduce massively complex world political policies down to a single factor like race. Bravo!

Ishmael,
One more thing...
It shows Israeli priviledge. A priviledge you get by supporting the policies of the US. Im not placing a value judgement on that. Im not saying that those policies are not flawed in myriad and significant ways. They are. They are in ways that we dont even know about yet. Criminally flawed I would say. But as much as I disagree with US policy on so many subjects Im not so shortsighted as to suggest that we based our decision about such weapons on race.

(3/28/01 Nelson Mandela Nobel Peace Prize letter)“If you follow the polls in Israel for the last 30 or 40 years, you clearly find a vulgar racism that includes a third of the population who openly declare themselves to be racist. This racism is of the nature of "I hate Arabs" and "I wish Arabs would be dead". If you also follow the judicial system in Israel you will see there is discrimination against Palestinians, and if you further consider the 1967 occupied territories you will find there are already two judicial systems in operation that represent two different approaches to human life: one for Palestinian life and the other for Jewish life. Additionally there are two different approaches to property and to land. Palestinian property is not recognised as private property because it can be confiscated. Palestinians are not struggling for a "state" but for freedom, liberation and equality, just like we were struggling for freedom in South Africa. Israel's racial discrimination is daily life of most Palestinians. Since Israel is a Jewish state, Israeli Jews are able to accrue special rights which non-Jews cannot do. Israel has deprived millions of Palestinians of their liberty and property. It has perpetuated a system of gross racial discrimination and inequality. It has systematically incarcerated and tortured thousands of Palestinians, contrary to the rules of international law. It has, in particular, waged a war against a civilian population, in particular children.” (3/28/01 Nelson Mandela Nobel Peace Prize letter)

Ismael,
OK. Once again you have quoted something that is at the same time true and also completely irrelevent to the point at hand. I agree that there is racial descrimination in Israel. It is a fact that is, in my opinion, beyond debate or dispute. But here is the key point: what does that have to do with why the US turns a blind eye toward the Israeli nuclear weapons program?
You have suggested here that there is, what would have to be, a massive conspiracy to deny dark skinned people access to nuclear weapons. In posts that I can only assume were meant to back up that suggestion you have given us a paraphrase of a US law and a quotation from Mr. Mandela both of which supported your point not at all. Not even a little. You have an interesting premise but do not seem able to support it with any evidence or even any logic.

BrianK is being wildly disingenuous, Ishmael & CritThink blinkered. It MAY not be about race, but it IS about who toes the amerikan line. Cross that line as Saddam did and the hyperpower has no compuction.
Who was it said, "amerika often forgives its enemies but it always betrays its friends". Oh yeh, "the best man in the Israeli gov" (of the time, copyright Henry the K)- Golda Meir.
