Surge Is Pushing Iraq Toward Partition
If today's news on Iraq isn't bleak enough for you, take heart: There's more. Since the surge began, the rate of Iraqis fleeing their homes has increased 20-fold. Part of the increase can be attributed to increased monitoring by the Iraqi government (such as it is), but continued sectarian violence is the real driver of displacement: Sixty-five percent of displaced Iraqis interviewed by the U.N. said that they had fled in response to direct threats to their lives. With so many Iraqis fleeing from mixed Sunni/Shiite areas, Iraq is looking more and more like a partitioned state.
Read more here about how the U.S. has hung its Iraqi supporters out to dry.

Molly Ivins suggested this at least two years back. About time. Split 'em up, let them fight it out. Get us out of Iraq. Send Bush and his family to the green zone, leave them there to tussle with his Iraqi pals.
Initially many Iraqis proposed a system of nine states with autonomous rule - but that was quickly ridiculed by right wing Minbari radio. There were initial calls for amnesty - but that was also shouted down: after all it would forgive "terrorists" who shot at US troops. All these early rejected proposals start looking good to us - after all this violence. If we resurrected these offers now, it would look lame and disingenuous. As I state: if a Ghandhi does emerge from this chaos the Bush administration will have him/her assassinated.
