GOP Tries to Steal Election; Democrats Do Something
The New York Times yesterday offered up an interesting new take on the California ballot measure that has garnered a great deal of media attention as of late, suggesting that its probable demise next month will be largely due to a shock-and-awe style assault on it by supporters of Hillary Clinton. The initiative would redistribute California's electoral votes by congressional district, effectively handing Republicans 20 free points in the otherwise blue state. The measure, sponsored by a Republican law firm, has been linked to supporters of Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani. Surprisingly, however, opposition has come not from grassroots internet stalwarts but instead from influential supporters of the Clinton campaign.
The snappiest analysis comes from Bruce E. Cain, director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, who the article quotes as saying that "Clinton's people have taken the Bush doctrine of pre-emptive military strikes against hostile nations and applied it to domestic campaigns."
The article attributes the bulk of the tactical work to Chris Lehane, a former member of Bill Clinton's administration and a Democratic heavy-hitter with enough influence to rally national Democrats, state Democrats, and the Democratic mayors of three major California cities to an unprecedented level of active opposition. But why this sudden vigilance, when normally it takes an outcry from local and internet activists to elicit even general condemnation from the elite—never mind actual action? Is this a sign that Clinton's people simply don't want to take the risk of losing those votes, or a long-awaited expression of moral certitude? Let's hope it's the latter and that our Democratic Congress takes the hint.

While they're at it, why not get some measures going in Red states that proportion electoral votes by congressional district results? What's good for the gander is good for the goose.

Let's just get rid of the Electoral College system and go with a direct election, in which every vote counts (and is counted....) How about a new Amendment, Congress?

Perhaps we should first have a national election where we can verify that all the votes are counted.

I think Bill's thought that a direct election of Pres and Veep -- "in which every vote counts (and is counted...) -- is a wish not reflected "on the ground."
Paper ballots first, in all elections. Then a fight on all fronts to roll back the six-plus years of Republic Party voter suppression activities--from redistricting efforts all the way to the throwing away of ballots cast, stuffing the ballot boxes, etc.
The voter suppression activities have been sophisticated, very well thought out and executed, and touch the election process--from the very beginning (filing for candidacy, state election laws, blocking registrations--to the very end--the count and the announcement of the count--AT EVERY POINT ALONG THE WAY.
So, in this "modern era of sophisticated election fraud," what used to be poll-watching on election day to assure an honest election now must begin a couple of state legislative sessions before a vote.
The line that applies here: Evil triumphs when men and women of good will do nothing.
Sadly, there's a lot to do.

The GOP has been stealing votes and elections for a long time but what they have stolen from the American people under their majority rule in Washington is criminal. Anyone who has lived through the GOP years and especially under the reign of King George has got to realize what a terrible job the GOP government has done. The GOP realizes they are about to hit the pavement as a result of the rotten job they’ve done. But in their death throes they are taking the dollar and the rest of the country with it. They've stuck our country with the Iraq war which has cost close to a trillion dollars (800 billion) so far and indeed will be left to the Democrats or who ever wins the 2008 elections, to clean up. As a matter of fact the next elected government will have to clean up New Orleans, another left over from the GOP; health insurance, whose primary problem is the outrageous cost of health insurance which has been allowed to rise faster than the floods waters of Katrina by the GOP. Then their are the illegal violations of the Geneva Convention, the US Constitution and the resultant global black eye that this GOP led government has served up in the name of the American people. It galls me to realize how this GOP has skewered us and served us up to the corporate entity? They've taken our boys and girls and sent them to fight their oil war. Even Alan Greenspan admitted Iraq was about oil. Billions of dollars have been handed over to corporations to rebuild Iraq and all they’ve done is pocket our tax dollars without even a thank you. The same thing happened with Katrina. Imagine what these greedy carpet baggers would do to Social Security! This GOP has used our US government to serve their own special needs and we and our children will pay for decades to come and they don’t give one hoot about the consequences for this country or its people! This GOP will spend every penny we have, if they can get away with it as long as it makes their people happy! But you can't spend one trillion dollars on nothing, because war expenditures don’t count towards the GDP, and not expect inflation and the erosion of our currency to happen. You can't practice pre-emptive war and not expect to initiate a global arms race. You can't keep raiding the treasury to fill the pockets of your corporate buddies and not expect to impoverish our country.
We've been fooled real good, and some people are still fooled and its costs us dearly but hopefully enough people know how badly they've been fooled and will take corrective action in 2008. I’m not sure this country will be able to tolerate the next year or so of GOP government but if we do survive their governance or lack there of until 2008 then I hope and pray that any citizen who prepares to cast his or her vote in 2008 remembers!

["...but what they (GOP) have stolen from the American people under their majority rule in Washington is criminal."]
Since the Dems gained majority control of Congress in 2006 they have continued to fund and pursue a war in Iraq, which they now know without question was launched based on bogus intel, and which a few Dems and Repubs could tell before the fact was bogus intel and a generally bad idea anyway... and oh-by-the-way, which they promised in the 2006 campaign they'd bring to a close.
Since the Dems gained majority control of Congress in 2006 they have, rather than putting a stop to warrantless spying on Americans and foreigners alike, given Bush his black heart's desire, and said it's "legal" for the executive branch to do so, regardless of the text of the 4th Amendment.
Since the Dems gained majority control of Congress in 2006 they have continued the back-room, sweetheart dealing of earmarks "air-dropped" into bills in conference committee, after both the House and Senate have voted on the bill WITHOUT such spending earmarks. A practice the Dems campaigned against in 2006, and in spite of passing a bill during the much touted 'First Hundred Hours' that we were assured would clean up such sweetheart dealing.
Christian Science Monitor says:
["That backroom tactic is what ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff called "the favor factory." It's where former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R) of California, now serving an eight-year sentence after pleading guilty to corruption charges, linked earmarks to bribes without scrutiny.
In a clarification of the intent of new reform bill, Senate majority leader Harry Reid told the Senate parliamentarian that the new law only applied to spending bills, not to authorization or tax bills. That means that members had no opportunity to challenge specific projects on the floor of the House or Senate.
"Now, senators know that they can add projects with impunity to the authorization bill and no one can object. That's business as usual"]
http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1005/p01s01-uspo.html
Since the Dems gained majority control of Congress in 2006, rather than taking steps to see that we did not broaden our wars and occupations in the Middle East, passing any bill to PROHIBIT Bush from invading another country without a specific CONSTITUTIONAL Declaration of War, they instead voted to urge George Bush to rattle his saber against Iran by declaring a government military organization, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, as a "terrorist organization". Thereby giving Dubya just the sort of cover he could use to launch military strikes, if he so chooses.
So tell me again:
WHAT is supposed to be my motivation to vote for Constitution Shredding, Backroom Dealing Democrats over Constitution Shredding, Backroom Dealing Republicans?
Meet the New Boss,
Same as the Old Boss
