Barney Frank Gets Heat from LGBT Advocates
Gay rights supporters are confronting an unlikely foe—Rep. Barney Frank. Frank, who is gay himself and has been a longtime champion of gay rights, is getting heat from civil rights advocates for supporting a job discrimination bill even though it omits transgender people.
The legislation, which would be the first to protect gays, lesbians, and bisexuals in the workplace, is a compromise that was reached to move the bill forward. A poll done by a popular gay news site shows that its readers are divided on the issue, with one-third supporting Frank's position, one-third opposing it, and one-third saying gay and transgender people shouldn't be lumped together in the first place. At a press conference yesterday, Frank blamed the tension on the "ideological purity that plagues American politics, that holds liberalism back in a number of areas."
As much as I think transgender people should be protected, Frank has a point. The Bush administration's failure to give an inch on everything from Iraq to civil liberties over the last seven years has left our country deeply divided and the population completely disillusioned with government. It's time to let our Democratic leaders lead us in the right direction, even if it takes a while to get to our final destination.

This is a major issue for the Transgender community, who have trouble keeping and getting jobs.
From our point of view, we have been offered nothing ... again.
A month or so ago Joe Solomnese of the HRC was ranting that we all had to move forward together, nobody left behind, but now ...
Well, it just isn't good enough, and hundreds of LGBTI organisations are saying so, to such effect that Pelosi has withdrawn the bill.
Somewhere you have to stop breaking our society into ever smaller bits so that you can have dogs to kick that nobody cares about.
woof!

I support everyone being able to be themselves, however, as a gay man I agree that putting gay and lesbian people together with transgender people is not really a perfect fit. It is a perfect fit in the same way that I stand up for all minority rights because I know what it feels like to be a minority and to be mis- and under represented. All the same, transgenderism being lumped with gay and lesbian rights I think adds to the confusion some people have about what homosexuality is. Boo!!! to the people who are criticizing Frank - Rome wasn't built in a day and attacking your allies for being wise enough to follow a slower and sounder course is very much idealogical purism.

Taking gender identity out of ENDA also endangers lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as well. It gives corporate lawyers a legal loophole to use in defending acts of discrimination in the workplace.
Also, taking out gender identity is not the only way that Frank and the Democratic Party "leadership" weakened ENDA in a year where it has no chance of avoiding a Bush veto.
This has been a huge betrayal of the entire lgbt community and is one of the things making me think I should vote Green in 2008.
The Democrats will have to go quite a ways to get my support back.

Well, libhomo, if many of your kin act as might you then the USA will have Mitt, Rudy or Dennis as president. Do you think you will be better off then?
