Da Vinci Decoded: Vatican Publish Knights of Templar Papers

Get ready fans and foes of Dan Brown: The Vatican has "discovered" a cache of documents from the Knights Templar. For those of you who were spared the bad movie and worse prose (via AP):

The military order of the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon was founded in 1118 in Jerusalem to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land after the First Crusade. As their military might increased, the Templars also grew in wealth, acquiring property throughout Europe and running a primitive banking system. After they left the Middle East with the collapse of the Crusader kingdoms, their power and secretive ways aroused the fear of European rulers and sparked accusations of corruption and blasphemy.

The documents in question "reproduces the entire documentation of the papal hearings convened after King Philip IV of France arrested and tortured Templar leaders in 1307 on charges of heresy and immorality," which includes "a 14th-century parchment showing that Pope Clement V initially absolved the Templar leaders of heresy, though he did find them guilty of immorality and planned to reform the order, according to the Vatican archives Web site."

AP continues: "Historians believe Philip owed debts to the Templars and used the accusations to arrest their leaders and extract, under torture, confessions of heresy as a way to seize the order's riches."

Okay, this is all juicy stuff but what I love best is this:

Only 799 copies of the 300-page volume, "Processus Contra Templarios," - Latin for "Trial against the Templars" - are for sale, said Scrinium publishing house, which prints documents from the Vatican's secret archives. Each will cost $8,377, the publisher said Friday. An 800th copy will go to Pope Benedict XVI, said Barbara Frale, the researcher who found the long-overlooked parchment tucked away in the archives in 2001.

The Da Vinci Code book was published in 2003. The movie came out in 2006. So the entire stupid "is the Da Vinci Code right or wrong" industry could have been, I dunno, at least arguing over the facts for the past four years had only the Vatican released this earlier.

And, though this isn't strictly relevant, before he became Pope Benedict, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, known until 1908 as the Holy Office of the Inquisition.

thank God that King George II..., uh, i mean King Philip IV managed to get the torture in, and obtain the confessions of heresy BEFORE the pope absolved the templar leaders of it!

learn the lessons of history?
i don't think so!

Why does the Church hide anything? Is it the dirt that they have done and still do or the things that fly in the face of their teachings?

Nick, what dirt do they still do?

Among other aspects, the Church
has so far avoided greater
attention to Augustin of Hippo,
one of the church fathers and
theologians.
It was to a good deal Augustins
works which were for the longest
part the actual holy scripture
and Augustine being the actual
super-messiah. The Church had and has a marvellous way of
presenting everything in the
name of Jesus (I don't mean this doctrinairian, Bible-
stumping.) This guys theology
was the script for the world
as "valley of misery" and so
forth, brought about so successfully.
Literature: James O'Donnel:
Augustine. A new Biography.

Um, I think it's "Knights Templar," without the "of," isn't it?

Look at the biggest Jewish right wing nut, Moses. He had a policy of genocide to steal the land from the original inhabitants. (Moses's policy for genocide is all in the Bible, but wasn't he an Egyptian and married to a Black woman? ) Modern day Zionists base their right to the land on this ancient first Hitler. What goes around comes around. We live in the 21st Century. Say no to Zionism, say no to racism.

damn, this place has turned into Jew Bash Central!

every story gets twisted into an opportunity for one or two guys, posting with 10 or 12 different names to bash jews, regardless of whether the story has anything to do with jews or israel.

like this one.
it started out being about the vatican, and 'Josh' somehow thought that led to a jew/israel bashing.

this gets very tiresome, and it's certainly not persuasive.

I imagine the debates within the Vatican of whether to make the papers public are probably worthy of a DB novel themselves.
Funny really, in my less informed view of God I'd have thought He'd prefer not to put a price of $8,377 on truth and release the info to the world for free.

Actually, the Bible does officially condone genocide - as long as it's for fun and not profit. Hitler was OK to kill all the Jews; he got scrod by God when his boys stole all their stuff.
Seriously though; the church has signed on to the divine right of kings, the Just War [predecessor to Jihad], predestination [rich guys are just blessed by God], and a whole lot of authoritarians are the agents of God dogma. They are the whores of Babylon in spades. So....What's new? That's why Jesus got so upset at liars and those who pervert faith into a self-justification back slapping orgy of disgust at "those people". People of faith [religion] have yet to find some authoritarian's backside that isn't worth kissing - for personal gain.

J.T., predestination is a Calvinist Protestant concept, not a Catholic concept. The concept of Predestination is that some are the elect, for eternal life, not "rich guys are blessed by God", which is the Jewish concept in the Old Testament. Speaking of the whores of Babylon, read the Babylonian Talmud. Princeton University's "Jesus in the Talmud" is a very good book. It shows that the Talmud is full of very offensive "anti-Christian" material. This is the authoritarian book that the Rabbi's follow. Rabbinacle Judaism is the successor to the Pharisees of Christ's day. You are right J.T.about "authority". Christ said that if you want to be first, you must be last and be a servant to your brothers. When religion and government are mixed(like in Europe in the olden days), it corrupts the religion. Christ and the Apostle Paul never told people to change the government, but to change their individual hearts and that would result in society being changed. The great commission was to only preach the Gospel, not to rule in civil government.

Jet, you really are a bigot. You whine(10/14 post) about the Jews getting a bad rap, but you are a bigot against Catholics. You advocate violence. What a hypocrite.

Todd J., you really were born without a sense of humor
does your handicap permit you special parking privileges?

people with a properly developed s.o.h. would have been able to see the tongue almost bursting through my cheek right over the internet

b.t.w., if you can show me where i said jews are getting a bad rap in that post, i'd be very impressed

all i can find that i said is that some morons who post here under God knows how many different screen names (Todd J., maybe?) seem determined to turn each and every thread into criticism of jews/israel, regardless of what the article in question addresses, and it's getting tiresome
i stand by what i said on 10/14

Bush is definitely not a reincarnation of Hitler. The Fuhrer had a mind of his own and bossed everybody around. Bush, on the other hand, well...Keitel is a name that comes to my mind when I think of Bush reincarnated. In the German General staff, his nickname was Lakeitel.
