Does Barbie Eat Fries?

myscene.jpg

Back in June, under fire for marketing junk food to children, McDonalds pledged to become more socially responsible. The company insisted that it didn't need to be regulated by the government. It would do its part to fight the childhood obesity epidemic by producing new advertising that included "healthy lifestyle messages" for kids.

Well, here's what they've come up with: A Barbie on rollerblades in every Happy Meal. The plastic sex-kittens are part of a new promotion to get little girls to consume the 700 calories and 28 grams of fat that are the average Happy Meal. But hey, Barbie is rollerblading!

Hey, I'm not McDonald's apologist by any means, but it is their business to sell those happy meals. I admit that a Rollerblade Barbie gimmic is a stupid one, but it's hard to think of a realistic campaign that would make everyone happy. Even the idea of offering the option of a fresh apple instead of fries [hey, I remember childhood and loving those crappy fries so it would probably be a hard sell] would piss off the potato farmers they support. Maybe a 'hold the fries' option and then a cute picture of two little girls ordering with Mommie at the counter, with the caption, 'Hey, you want to share the fries?' That's my smurfy take on solving the problem; not a terrible idea but then, I'm not paid big bucks by McDonald's for my 'instincts' on these kinds of things.

One more thought: Can you imagine trying to have a five minute conversation with any one of the Barbie Rollerblade Club - or worse still, all of them? They look....impossible.
