Duncan Hunter is a Scary Man
I'll just say this about Duncan Hunter— the man could not more be hawkish. At one point in his speech here at FRC's Washington Briefing, he promised more preemptive wars without even bothering to explain why or with whom, saying only that they might be necessary. And almost completely out of the blue, he said, "That little country, that little postage stamp called Israel, has stood by the United States on every major security issue in the Middle East. They should not give back an inch of their land." The room absolutely erupted in cheers—one woman literally jumped up and down. I guess I was unaware of how important Israel is to this community. I wonder why no other candidate has mentioned it.

And now Duncan is planning to keep the 52nd district in the family. Duncan Dwayne Hunter is a candidate. Since He is on active duty with the Marines in Iraq, Duncan must do his fund raising. Duncan calls it his presidential campaign. Let's see what he does with the funds he has left over. Hopefully he won't need them if he gets sucked up into the Cunningham Jerry Lewis things. This way, his industry buddies at GD, L-3, and others can donate twice to Duncan Dwayne, the annointed, once directly and once to Senior's presidential slush fund.

Yes, in spite of the fact the vast majority would be hard pressed to find it on a map a vast swath of conservative America considers Israel to be one of the most important issues of the day, or throughout history (all, um, 6011 years of it!?!). For them it is far from a political issue. It is a deeply important religious issue that goes to the core of their beliefs. It comes down to the fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible, or in a word, "Rapture."
According to their view, certain conditions must be met before Christ returns and yanks them up bodily into heaven, where they will rejoin their newly ascended dead loved ones and all other true born again Christians. The conditions most central to this attachment to Israel include Palestine being in the hands of the Jews and the the Jews undergoing the great Tribulation. This is where it gets scary.
They believe that the tribulation will take the form of a conflagration consuming the Middle East, with Israel being attacked by all her enemies. What makes it nightmarish, though, is that they believe this can be set up, that they can get a short cut through their prophecy and expedite the coming of Armageddon and the Rapture by helping all this to happen.
Therefor they support the militant Zionists of Israel and seek to keep Israel strong and aggressive, not because they hope that will prevent wars in the region but because it will bring an end to the whole world.
According to my fundamentalist friends, Israel can do no wrong... as long as they don't seek to give a bit of land back to Palestinians or seek a truly lasting peace. Why? Because it is "God's Plan"
Scary, or what?
