That's Why It's Called the Nobel, Not the Noble
James Watson, a geneticist who won the Nobel Prize in 1962 for discovering the structure of DNA, was suspended this week from his position at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York state, after being quoted in the Times of London saying he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa," because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours—whereas all the testing says not really."
Even if Watson, who seems believably mortified by his own words, is in fact a horrible bigot, he’s far from the only award-winner to have a less-than-illustrious record. Consider Menachem Begin, who won the Peace Prize in 1978 for helping to negotiate the Camp David Accords and who went on, in the 1980s, to authorize Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. And then there is the notorious Henry Kissinger, who received the prize in 1973 for his work on the Vietnam Peace Accords, and yet also orchestrated the secret carpet-bombing of Cambodia.
Perhaps this is all fitting somehow, considering that Alfred Nobel was the inventor of dynamite.

There was a Spanish doctor whose name I forget, from early in the 20th c. who won a Nobel for being the inventor of the procedure known as lobotomy. It all started out with animal experiements in which he'd simply insert an ice pick into the critter's eye supraorbitally, flick it around it there, and that was it: abnormal behavior repaired. He transferred and adapted the procedure to (supposedly) psychotic humans and won a Nobel for it.

You are right, consider Al Gore, the big hypocrite that also won with that fraud of a movie. Al is in good company with all these other misfits.

Most people saying that climate change is a fraud, or needs more research, bought everything Bush said re. Iraq hook, line and sinker. They casually dismiss the 10,000 times as much evidence for climate change as they considered adequate justification for conquering Iraq. It's noteworthy that over the next 25 years, with vet's benefits and debt service, we'll probably spend as much on iraq as they think doing something about the climate issue will cost.

In our society there are two ways of thinking: the wrong way and the politically-correct way. Mr. Watson, despite his brilliant achievements, is being punished for publicly enunciating his politically incorrect views.
It's a damn shame you're not allowed to hold certain views anymore withoug being persecuted. What's suddenly happened to the First Amendment, anyhow??
Regarding Mr. Watson's views, does anyone even care that they could quite possibly be CORRECT?? For example, blacks consistently score below all other races on IQ tests. And I can find no example of blacks governing themselves successfully -- not in Africa or elsewhere. Every place they've taken over has proven to be a disaster -- Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Afica, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Cleveland,Newark, New Jersey, etc., etc., etc.
Mr. Watson is simply trying to view this matter objectively, and for this he's been ostracized.

Harry, you are certainly correct. You speak the truth.

Under the First Amendment one assumes you are able to spout racist rubbish freely; just don't confuse it with having any basis in fact,
"Every place they've taken over has proven to be a disaster"
Hmm.. American interventions in the Middle East and South America have been glowing successes have they? I really don't think that people in glass houses should throw too many stones about, personally.

Dr. Watson won the Noble Prize in 1962.
But his inability to give credit to Dr.Rosalind Franklin at the time, says more about his character, than anything else!

Harry, you're wrong. Zimbabwe was a model for success among African nations until its current leader took over. Go read The Economist on that subject.
As for Watson-- one cannot call just anyone who says anything bad about members of another group, genetic or otherwise, a bigot. It bankrupts the term and reduces the speakers to nothing more than partisans. Science, whether it says Watson is right or wrong, has to trump what people desperately wish to believe. Those who say that that is true with global warming are the most profound hypocrites if they deny it with whatever links there are between genes and intelligence.

Martin, Dr. Watson did state that "Ashkenazi Jews" have higher intelligence than other people, which some believe may be his way of making amends to the late Dr. Franklin.

Harry, perhaps you need to take a few classes in history and political science before attempting to paint with mop head. First off IQ has little to do with governing as George Bush being exhibit A. Although he does a poor job of that, so... Two, the places you use as example Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Afica, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Cleveland,Newark, New Jersey, etc. Are perfect exhibits of countries, cities that were inherited problems by white politicians and businessmen. These oppresors, and that is the right term, took what they needed exploited those people and then they were either run out or cut and ran when they could no longer extract whatever value they could from those people. Slavery can not be overstated as a primary cause of much of the problems we see today in Africa and African-Americans. The economic prisons that these people have had to endure at the hand of white opressors is staggering. Yours and James Watson's IQ justification is fuel for that type of incorrect thinking. While it is true that Africa and many other developing nations are in peril of collapse, I think there are far too many powerful outside influences on their economies, and society that are the root causes of their misery. Let's maybe work toward helping out our fellow man, as opposed to causing the problems and then insulting their intelligence.

Fact Checker, you just proved Dr. Watson's point that Africans have weak genes and can not raise above perceived hardships and injustices without the help of the oppressor. You really have a victim's mentality and will always be bound by the prison of your weak mind.

Dr. Watson may have won a Nobel prize for the determination of the structure of DNA, but that doesn't mean he knows what he is talking about. Science is supported by empirical evidence not supposition and loosely observed anecdotes. Anyone who has done genetic research can easily identify his statements as faulty, overreaching, and consisting solely of his opinions. There is no one gene or a couple of genes for anything as complex as cancer or intelligence. The environment also plays a factor in the development of both. So for those of you who have argued for the veracity of Dr. Watson's statements, you have no scientific proof and your suppositions and perhaps prejudices are showing.
As for Global warming , there actually has been evidence presented in peer reviewed journals so you can't really compare the two.

First, someone needs to show me empirical evidence that an IQ test measures something more than desired traits by those who developed them. If capitalism is the measure of our success, maybe the test is worth something; our culture is not always the best model for determining valuable traits.
