A New Twist on the Old Chain Gang
Somehow this seems so wrong on so many levels...
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered the corrections' department to join the state's massive effort to combat the wildfires raging around San Diego. Not only do the prisons have a bunch of fire trucks to lend to the overtaxed fire departments, but the New York Times reports that more than 2,600 inmates, trained as firefighters, are now out there fighting to save Mel Gibson's house San Diego.

They are going to SD since the Malibu fire(Mel Gibson's residence) is contained. "Tuesday evening, Gov. Schwarzenegger said he had ordered state prisons to deploy their fire fighting muscle — including six fire engines and 18 fire captains — to assist in fire fighting. The state’s corrections department also has more than 2,640 trained inmate firefighters actively battling the southern California wildfires today after being deployed by Mr. Schwarzenegger.-Per NYT"
Ms.Mencimer your false reporting is too typical of the reporting that goes on at MoJo so MoJo has become an unreliable source to many, as evidenced by the decline in readership. I will recommend that you get bumped.

The practice of inmates volunteering for firefighting has gone on for many years, possibly decades, here in California and probably all the other western states. My understanding is that they're fully trained, and only the most trusted inmates are allowed to volunteer (a crew of 10 or 12 is supervised by one correction officer). They probably receive perks for their efforts. Please do some research. No, I'm not a republican and I don't watch Fox News. I've lived through one fire.
