Al Gore: Venture Capitalist

No one really still thinks Al Gore is going to run for president (hair's too long, waistline too expansive). But here's one more signal that he's not running: Gore yesterday announced that he's joining a prestigious venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, where he'll direct investments that help combat global warming.
Despite the green-sounding job description, and promises from the firm that Gore would be an "active" partner, it's hard to imagine Gore will be doing much to save the world there. After all, when would he find the time? He also serves on the board of Apple, he's a senior adviser to Google and has a pretty extensive public speaking schedule. No doubt he'll be out campaigning for a candidate or two this year as well. The new job does, however, offer something his nonprofit climate change group doesn't: stock options, which Gore apparently needs after a lifetime in public service.
Comments
Is anyone surprised? All he cares about, and all he's ever cared about, is promoting himself and making money from the corporates. He's already taken in $100 million from corporate interests in the seven years since he sold out the American people (at least he got a good price), and I guess now he's working on his second $100 million. Or maybe he wants to be a billionaire. Typical liberal, typical Democrat. When are people going to wake up?
AL IS NOT!
The BIGGEST of his three houses, a measley 4 times larger than the average home built in the US last year, only consumes 20 times the national average in energy!
I bet Nancy Pelosi's place consumes WAY more than that!
And he only owns those hundreds of thousands of $s in Occidental Petroleum stock so he can nudge them towards the Green Side. It's Not ABOUT the Money!
Not only that, the zinc mine on his Tennessee property which the State cited for dumping large quantities of barium, iron and zinc into the nearby Caney Fork River was closed down FOUR Years Ago!

Some very poor reporting there Stephanie:
From the AfP -
Gore joins 'clean tech' venture capital firm
Former US vice president Al Gore has signed on as a partner at a prestigious California venture capital firm, just weeks after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the company said today.
Gore joins the Silicon Valley company Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, which was an early investor in Google, Netscape and Amazon.com, it said in a statement.
He is to be a leader in the Menlo Park, California company's "clean tech" investment efforts, media reports said.
Gore, who served eight years as Bill Clinton's vice president, narrowly lost the 2000 presidential election to incumbent President George W Bush.
He has campaigned against the dangers of climate change, and has seen his popularity soar as "green" efforts gain momentum.
The release of his Oscar-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth", won him widespread respect and newfound admiration around the world.
Gore has said he would donate his salary to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a non-profit advocacy group he founded.
*****
It is a clean firm for green investment and he is donating his salary - What more could one expect of him?
He is (after all) a politician.
More on the up and up than any revolving door defense contractor.

It is illogical to disregard or edit out pertinent data, Captain.
AP reporting, at this location:
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/12/AR2007111200850.html?tid=informbox
also included the following information:
"He would not disclose his salary...
The donation (his salary) does not include stock options. Typically, a tiny fraction of a venture capitalist's compensation is salary; the vast majority of wealth comes from sale of stock options when the companies the firm invests in are sold to the public."

I think this deal benefits KPCB more than Al Gore.
LOL Mike. You sound a bit jealous about Gore's good fortune.
If Al Gore only wants to promote himself, then why is he spending so much time educating the public about Global Warming/Climate Crisis.
I just wish everyone else were so self-interested that they advocated such good causes.

I posted the complete AFP article. To imply I left something out or edit is beneath contempt.
http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5hWWJiwv9sPz53xdaVi_a9VjmjS9g
What difference does it make if it a one dollar or five million yen? He is donating his salary. The amount might not even be settled.
Note: AFP versus AP.
I stand by every post I have ever made. I do not edit the content unless I note it with [...]. That is how us honest folks do it. How about you? Is the above a clip from an AP story? Seems silly unless you just missed the “F” in AFP.
Do you think AFP is the same thing as AP or did you miss a letter.

[...]
The former vice president pledged that 100 percent of his Kleiner Perkins salary will be donated to the Alliance for Climate Protection, his Palo Alto, Calif., nonprofit that advocates for stronger climate change policies.
The donation does not include stock options. Typically, a tiny fraction of a venture capitalist's compensation is salary; the vast majority of wealth comes from sale of stock options when the companies the firm invests in are sold to the public.
"It's one of the benefits of not being in the public sector anymore," Gore said with a laugh.
He wouldn't say how much Kleiner Perkins was paying him.
****
And why should a private person disclose their wages or income?
Because he is no longer in public service? Because public service pays so well he should never have to work again? Do you know what a VEEP makes?
HA!

I apologize if you were offended, Captain.
I simply read the lower-case 'f' between A and P as a probable typo, having never encountered a news source known as AfP, and the quote from the article was written very closely to the AP article I linked to.
It was an error in logic.
I can admit an error.
It would be illogical to do otherwise.
Why would a private citizen make public disclosure of the use to which he puts his salary?
The amount is undisclosed.
It could as well be one dollar per year, or a thousand, and were it a pittance, it would not serve one well to disclose that information, if one was making a very public matter by publishing that the salary was being donated.
On the other hand, were it a substantial amount such as, perhaps, $700,000 per year, it would serve one VERY well to see that the public knows what an enormous amount is being donated, rather than pocketed along with the proceeds of the stock options.
Simple logic.
It is fallible, but still a very useful tool.

A persons income is their business. It will always be so unless it changes.

The manner of disposal of persons income is their business. It will always be so unless it changes.
Why would a man, on one hand, publicize his private business regarding the manner of disposal of his income, making a point of telling the world that it will be donated to 'the cause', yet choose not to disclose his private business in the amount he is declining to take home?
It is a question worthy of logical analysis, Captain.

I didn't realize Gore sat on the board of Apple. Perhaps he could do something to change Apple's terrible environmental practices (the worst among all electronics manufacturers)?...
Of course, one of the inconvenient truths Gore conveniently omitted from his book is the major toxic horror (not to mention the moral horror) of factory farming.
No one is perfect, and I also see no reason for Gore to disclose his income. But I do wonder if there are other environmentalist who are better examples.

I don't care if he discloses his income or not, but if a guy known to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars is trying to impress people by making a public display of a charitable donation, it would make a much more lasting impression if he also made public that it was a substantial amount, like Bill Gates did with his foundation.
